SU Football Commit Robert Washington Recruiting Girlfriend's Brother, LB/S TJ Sanders (PS; Bailey)

In the three days following the announcement of his verbal commitment to Syracuse, Robert Washington has quickly taken on the role of recruiter.

Four-star defensive back Jared Mayden and three-star athlete Moe Neal were two of the initial high-profile targets Washington turned on to the Orange.

During an interview on Sunday, Washington passed the phone along to another recruit — one that is just starting his recruiting process and could deliver Washington a couple extra lumps in practice: East Gaston (Mt. Holly, N.C.) High School linebacker/safety TJ Sanders.

Sanders, a Class of 2017 prospect, is also the brother of Washington's girlfriend, Destiny Sanders.

"Robert, he's a big guy but if I have a chance to hit him, I can't back down from that," Sanders said with a chuckle. "I just might have to hit him a time or two."

The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Sanders called Washington a "brother" and explained that the two have known each other for about five years after meeting at a football camp. Next season, they'll also be teammates as Washington is transferring from SouthLake Christian (Huntersville, N.C.) Academy to East Gaston in order to graduate early.

Sanders spoke with SU running backs coach DeAndre Smith over the phone on Tuesday and said that Smith would be visiting his school on Wednesday.

"He told me to make sure my grades are good so when it comes time for me to get an offer from them, it could be possible," Sanders said.

Duke's Chris Taylor Heads List of ACC Breakout Players (usatoday.com; Myerberg)

One cycle of college football is renewed each spring, when the dearly departed — former starters, key reserves, perhaps an All-America selection or two — are replaced by a slew of untested and unproven new contributors. For the latter, spring drills also marks an opportunity: There are holes to fill for each team in the Football Bowl Subdivision, on offense and defense, and the competition for each open spot will be intense.

With spring drills nearly complete, here are a few breakout players from the Atlantic Coast Conference to keep an eye on come September.

1. Duke WR Chris Taylor. Taylor is poised to grab a starting role for the Blue Devils after redshirting as a true freshman in 2014. There's clearly room for Taylor to make his mark: Duke must replace a pair of senior receivers, led by all-conference pick Jamison Crowder, and will need the redshirt freshman to produce from the start.

2. Wake Forest OL Ryan Anderson, Phil Haynes and Justin Herron. All three spent last season learning the ropes as part of Dave Clawson's first recruiting class. Come the fall, don't be surprised if all three stand in the starting lineup: Anderson at center and Haynes and Herron at tackle. That might not be a good thing for 2015, but this trio could form the backbone of the Demon Deacons' rebuilding efforts.

3. Virginia OL Jake Fieler. After taking first-team snaps at left guard and right tackle during the spring, it's hard to peg exactly where the redshirt freshman will end up on Virginia's two-deep come the season opener. It should be noted, however, that injuries to several likely contributors — five linemen missed all or part of the spring — could allow Fieler to carve out a major spot in the rotation when the Cavaliers return to action in August.

QB Uncertainty Abounds for ACC Atlantic Teams (northwestgeorgianews.com)

It was easy to spot all the quarterback uncertainty during the spring for Atlantic Division teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

It starts with the health of Deshaun Watson at Clemson and how Florida State will replace Jameis Winston. But the questions extend beyond the two teams who have finished alone atop the division for three straight seasons, whether due to personnel loss at Boston College, injury at Louisville or a new scheme at Syracuse.

Watson is a potential all-ACC star after an impressive freshman season, but he’s recovering from surgery for a torn knee ligament. The injury kept him out of the bowl win against Oklahoma, then limited his spring activity while the team broke in new co-offensive coordinators.

“He was able to do a lot this spring from a football standpoint, drill work and things like that, throwing,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. “I really just basically had him with me the whole time when we would do our competitive team stuff, so he had to really mentally stay sharp.”

The Seminoles spent the spring preparing for life after Winston, the Heisman Trophy winner and possible top overall NFL draft pick.

Rising junior Sean Maguire won a start against Clemson last year when Winston was suspended, and led the spring race as FSU’s most experienced quarterback. But he had an up-and-down spring game to head into the offseason.

“We’ve got to play better around him,” coach Jimbo Fisher said afterward, “but he has to play a little better, too.”

The questions linger elsewhere in the division.

Paul Johnson: Golfer Extraordinaire (espn; Adelson)

Bo might know long drives, but Paul knows winning golf tournaments.

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson proved once again he knows his way around a golf course, teaming with Jon Barry to win their second straight Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament Tuesday outside Atlanta. Talk about home-course advantage.

Johnson and Barry have won the tournament four times in the last five years.

And by the looks of it, Johnson takes his golf pretty seriously. Game face is securely on, even after the playoff victory.

Syracuse Women's Lacrosse Game vs Loyola Moved From Baltimore Out of 'Abundance of Caution' (PS; Murray)

The Syracuse women's lacrosse game against Loyola (Md.) scheduled for Saturday has been moved from Baltimore to Syracuse, according to a notice on the Greyhound's website.

Out of an abundance of caution, Loyola head coach Jen Adams and Syracuse head coach Gary Gait — who coached Adams at Maryland from 1998-01 — mutually decided it would be in the best interest of both teams to move the game to Syracuse.
The game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at SU Soccer Stadium. Admission will be free of charge.

Public schools were shut down in Baltimore on Tuesday after riots on Monday night following Freddie Gray's funeral. Gray died April 19 of spinal cord and other injuries sustained while in police custody.

This is a huge issue for the ACC and SEC. It will be interesting to see if the B1G and B12, who desperately need to recruit the Deep South better to stay relevant, are able to keep doing this.

My money is on the SEC/ACC winning this. These schools are clearly violating the intent of the rule and they don't have many friends to support them.
