SU Football: Is This the Era of Doing the Little Things? (TNIAAM; Keeley)
If Orange Fan Fest was a sign of things to come, it looks like Syracuse Athletics might be back on the right track.
I think we use hyperbole and symbolism and things of that nature like a crutch in our society. We say the team that "wanted it more" won and we love to talk about "when men were men."
That said, I do believe in "culture." I think it's a tangible thing that you can find in corporations, homes and sports teams even if they're not doing so consciously.
It's not always there. Sometimes people are the way they are because that's the way they are. "Bad apples," as it were. Outliers who represent themselves more than they represent the whole.
But I do think that a culture is an inevitable result inside an entity over time. And I firmly believe that the culture is determined by those in charge and seeps down to everyone under them. They may not even know they're participating in it but that's probably because it feels like "this is the right way to do things" even if it's not.
Syracuse Athletics under DOC Gross was a Big Picture culture. It was New York City billboards and flashy uniforms and MetLife Stadium games and New York's College Team.
That's all well and good and there's value in those ideas but the problem is that oftentimes a Big Picture culture forgets about The Little Things.

NY Class of 2017 QB Jack Coan is East Underclassman of the Day (diablo.com; Dohn)
Jack Coan, a class of 2017 quarterback from West Sayville (N.Y.) Sayville High, already holds a handful of offers and made a few trips as his recruitment starts to hit stride.
He is today's East Underclassman Of The Day, and for good reason. Coan already holds offers from Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Rutgers and Syracuse, and he is getting interest from Boston College, Penn State, Stanford, UCF and Wake Forest.
Coan spent the offseason making visits and become more familiar with the recruiting process. He visited Rutgers, Michigan, Miami, Wake Forest, Stanford and UCF. He said he did not have any fall visits set, but he could make a few, if his schedule permits.

The University of Maryland will begin its second year of Big Ten competition this month, and by nearly every measure, the move from the Atlantic Coast Conference, which the Terps helped start in 1953, has been a rousing success.
In fact, if not for the secrecy that surrounded the negotiations that brought Maryland into the Big Ten, and the debate over whether the Board of Regents should have been consulted on the move, there'd be precious little conflict to the story.
The concerns that were raised at the time -- the loss of traditional rivals, such as North Carolina and Duke, the increased travel distances that would take athletes away from College Park, Md., for longer stretches of time and make it harder for fans and parents to follow their teams on the road -- have generally been silenced.

Although an exact number wasn't available Saturday, at last check UConn's Mike Enright said the school had sold in the neighborhood of 15,000 season tickets. This is approximately half the high-water mark of 32,000 set in 2005. After selling 22,000 in 2012, the number rose to 24,500 in 2013 with home games against Michigan and Randy Edsall's Maryland Terps before taking a small dip last year. One could argue that when the school needs it most, interest in UConn football is at its lowest point since going big time in 2003.
"We've got to win, we've got to win games," Diaco said. "We've got to share our vision. We've got to share our mission. I think people can get behind that. It's real. It is visceral. It's about doing it the right way, about fairness, about competition, about how these young people can grow into winners. People can rally around that. People can support that. Then we let [the players] meet the people. And when they come, we've got to win. More will come. More will stay. It's a great football state. It really is."
