Welcome to National Banana Split Day!

Today is National Banana Split Day! This decadent dessert has been around since the early 1900s and is the perfect treat to enjoy on a warm summer night.

The split is a variation of the traditional ice cream sundae and is usually served in a special dish called a banana boat. It’s easy to make, but you’ll need quite a few ingredients! First, split a banana and place a slice on either side of your boat. Then add three scoops of ice cream in between—one of chocolate, one of vanilla, and one of strawberry. Generously top the chocolate scoop with hot fudge, the vanilla with candied pineapple, and the strawberry with strawberry sauce. Next, swirl whipped cream over each scoop. Finish it off with a sprinkle of crushed nuts and a few maraschino cherries. Yum!

To celebrate National Banana Split Day, set up a make-your-own banana split buffet and invite your friends over for an impromptu ice cream social. Enjoy!

Restoring Syracuse to a Football Dynasty (insidetheloudhouse.com; White)

Syracuse football has steadily declined since the era of Jim Brown and Ernie Davis. First, it was crucial for the Orange to move out of the Big East and into the ACC. The ACC is one of the Power five conferences which means way more money coming into the athletics and their facilities, hence the new indoor Ensley Athletic Center designed for football and lacrosse practices and workouts used mostly during the harsh winters. Syracuse received $19.2 million from the conference in 2013-14 after they left the Big East a year early, though they had to pay back $7.5 million to them for exiting and opting out 27 months early.

The money given and now that we’ve become a part of the power five is crucial for recruiting. Something that Syracuse had lacked since it was pushed off into the Big East and had not played any big time opponents. More players from the South and West have been more keen to coming to Syracuse because they can face off against teams like Florida State and Clemson. They get to travel to better schools in warmer climates and play a way better array of competition and this is what draws kids into a college for football. The ACC has elevated Syracuse football on a bigger stage, giving them more television opportunities and greater exposure. More exposure equals more chances for the players to show their skills in a game and reach their dream of entering the NFL after collegiate ball.

SU Football 2015: Why the Orange Will Finish 3-9 (TNIAAM; Tahmosh)

Ed. Note - This week, TNIAAM writers are taking a stab at telling you why this football team will finish with a specific record.
Everything that could go wrong last year did, on the way to a miserable 3-9 season. It probably won't happen again this year, but then again, it's not the craziest idea.

  • Monday: 3-9 (Brian Tahmosh)
  • Tuesday: 4-8 (Michael Burke)
  • Wednesday: 5-7 (James Szuba)
  • Thursday: 6-6 (John Cassillo)
  • Friday: 7-5 (Sean Keeley)
Let's get this out of the way up front before you all destroy me in the comments.

  1. I do not think this scenario will actually happen
  2. I do not HOPE this scenario happens, because it will be miserable for everyone, including me
  3. This is likely the worst-case scenario for SU football if everything goes wrong
OK, that all being said, it's also not an impossible scenario to see the Orange finish 3-9 this season. It happened last year, and it could certainly happen again if things go poorly. And if things go down as follows - with nine-consecutive losses to end the season - it would probably spell the end of the Scott Shafer era in Syracuse.

Here's how it would likely transpire:

Can You Pronounce Boeheim?

Incoming Students: Here's How to Pronounce Skaneateles, Nedrow, Salina, Pulaski, more (PS; video; Tulloch)

In the next few weeks, hundreds of new faces will stream into Syracuse for the first time.

Some will be college first-years and their families, coming to study at Le Moyne College, Syracuse University or OCC. Many will come from across the state, possibly from outside New York, to attend the New York State Fair.

Are you one of those new faces? Welcome.

We want you to be able to find your way around town, without butchering our street and village names. Ostrom Avenue is OH-strom, not AW-strom. Salina Street is Sah-LIE-na, not Sah-LEE-na.

It's just one of those things only Syracuse natives and residents will know. Mispronouncing words is part of getting to know a new place, but it's like having spinach in your teeth. Some people will point it out, while others will pretend it didn't happen, then make fun of you later.
