Welcome to National Ice Cream Cone Day!

Hip hip hooray – September 22nd is National Ice Cream Cone Day! While the origins of this annual holiday are unknown, folks have been enjoying cool and creamy ice cream scoops served in a crunchy cone for over a century.
Ice Cream Cone History

There is some debate as to who actually “invented” the ice cream cone. Legend has it, ice cream vendor Italo Marchiony, created an edible cup for his homemade ice cream in an effort to reduce costs. He filed a U.S. Patent for his invention on September 22, 1903. But an ice cream merchant from England, Antonio Valvona, received a U.S. Patent for his edible biscuit cups machine in 1902. Both men created edible ice cream cups with flat bottoms and tapered sides. During the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, Ernest Hamwi claimed to make the first edible waffle cone, called a zalabia.

Today’s cones are available in different sizes, shapes and flavors. Regardless who invented them, ice cream cones are delicious treats that are fun to eat whether you lick “em or bite “em!

SU Football Primer: LSU Week (DO; Blum)

Syracuse (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast) will face No. 8 Louisiana State (2-0, 1-0 Southeastern) in Week 4 looking to continue its perfect start — in terms of won-loss record — to the season. The game will take place on Saturday at noon in the Carrier Dome and will be broadcast on ESPN. Here’s everything you need to know about SU’s third nonconference game of the season.

Searching for answers

It’s not 100 percent clear if Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey will be available on Saturday after suffering a hit to the head in the first half of Syraucse’s 30-27 overtime win over Central Michigan. Scott Shafer said the freshman will probably be doubtful when speaking in his weekly cuse.com video, but he’s still listed as the starter on the Week 4 depth chart.

Austin Wilson and Zack Mahoney split time in the second half, with the latter leading the game-winning drive in overtime.

Mahoney, referred to almost exclusively as “The Officer” by coaches and teammates, came into the season as the fifth-string quarterback behind Terrel Hunt, Dungey, Wilson and AJ Long. Now he might find himself as the starter in Week 4 against the No. 8 team in the country.

Unsung hero

Riley Dixon was one of the bright spots in what was an up-and-down game on Saturday. He had five punts for 252 yards. He won the Ray Guy Award for Player of the Week, awarded to the nation’s best punter each week. During a second half when Syracuse struggled to move the ball down the field, his powerful kicking helped bail the Orange’s offense out.

After the game, SU linebacker and captain Zaire Franklin said that Dixon was the most valuable player on the team. His longest punt of the day traveled 60 yards, while logging an average of 50.4 yards per kick.

Film Breakdown of Pass Defense Issues Against CMU (TNIAAM; Burke)

After John Wolford torched Syracuse for 373 yards through the air in Week 2, I didn't think it was possible for the Orange's pass defense to regress. But that's what happened Saturday, when Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rushthrew for 430 yards and two touchdowns against SU in a 30-27 loss.

Rush is a talented quarterback, but I'm less inclined to give him credit for what transpired than I am to blame Syracuse. Thanks to some inherent flaws in SU's defensive schemes, Rush was consistently throwing to wide open receivers.

On the above play in the first quarter, Syracuse brings a cornerback blitz from Rush's left, freeing up wide receiver Jesse Kroll. SU's safeties are playing deep and only one linebacker (Zaire Franklin) drops back into coverage -- and he doesn't do so until the ball is almost out of Rush's hand and it's clear that CMU won't be running the ball. This leaves Kroll virtually uncovered, and because SU's blitz doesn't get to Rush in time, an easy completion follows.

This became a common theme throughout the day: Syracuse's only hope to stop Rush was to get significant pressure on him.

On a key third down in the second quarter, SU sent more pressure -- this time a six-man blitz -- but completely forgot to account for Kroll, who was left wide open in the flat on Rush's right.

Rumblings: Despite getting a scare from Western Michigan in a 30-27 overtime win Saturday, Syracuse is 3-0 for the first time since 1991.

On offense, briefly

Syracuse may be down to its third quarterback with starter Terrel Hunt out for the season and backup Dungey leaving Saturday’s game after a helmet-to-helmet hit.

On defense, briefly

The Orange has allowed just 140 rushing yards and 1.5 yards per attempt in the first three games. They’ll face their first real test in LSU star Leonard Fournette.

Will We See AJ Long in 2015? (TNIAAM; Wall)

Last year, AJ Long was being hailed by many Syracuse Orange fans as the future of the Quarterback position. He was the most successful of the quarterbacks used last year. The plan for Long in 2015 was to red-shirt, since starter Terrell Hunt was back. However, when Eric Dungey was knocked out of Saturday's game against Central Michigan, both Austin Wilson and Zack Mahoney saw action while Long remained on the sidelines.

It was fair to ask if the plan to red-shirt Long was still wise, given the injuries to Hunt and Dungey. With the success Long had last season and Syracuse fighting to return to a bowl game in 2015, wouldn't it make sense to get him in such an important game?

Offensive Coordinator Tim Lester told Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com that Long just hasn't shown he's healthy enough to play in 2015. The broken hand that Long suffered this summer hasn't enabled him to show the coaches that he's ready to run the offense. (It's interesting that the Syracuse coaches seem willing to disclose some specific injuries to the media, and not others).

The issue right now appears to be Long's ability to throw downfield, which we've seen is a key component of Lester's offense. The option look has allowed Syracuse to use play-action to hits some long passes through the first three games.

"That's kind of a necessity," Lester said. "You've got to be able to throw the ball down the field. He's struggling right now and he's frustrated, but he's working on it."

Heisman Watch: LSU's Leonard Fournette Shines Against Auburn (si.com; Ellis)

It’s never a bad choice to listen to Garth Brooks, and the words of the legendary country singer hold true when assessing the current race for the Heisman Trophy. Take the lyrics of Brooks’ 1993 hit single “Callin’ Baton Rouge”, for example:

Operator, won’t you put me on through?
I gotta send my love down to Baton Rouge.

Like Brooks, the Heisman Watchman sends his love to Baton Rouge after Week 3 of college football. That’s because LSU running back Leonard Fournette is the new leader in the Heisman Watch after a stirring performance against Auburn.

Last month I warned Heisman voters not to overlook non-quarterback contenders. That advice is looking more and more wise through three weeks of football. Alabama running back Derrick Henry took the top spot in our Heisman Watch last week, but now it’s time for Fournette make his case. The star of the Bayou Bengals is the best player in college football right now.

Week 3 Heisman Watch

1. Leonard Fournette, RB LSU
2. Derrick Henry, RB Alabama
3. TrevoneBoykin, QB TCU
4. Nick Chubb, RB Georgia
5. Ezekiel Elliott, RB Ohio State

Syracuse hoping to pull off the season’s biggest upset.

LSU jumped in several people’s top four after dismantling Auburn on Saturday. Leonard Fournette is in the conversation as the country’s best player, and good luck to anyone with an opposing opinion. Rudy Ford can tell you what happens if you venture onto Fournette’s bad side. Syracuse is 3-0 for the first time, and the defense has been solid early on. Granted the competition has not been great, but Syracuse’s defense is forcing mistakes and is second in the country in turnover margin. LSU hasn’t turned the ball over in two games, however. Syracuse isn’t sure whether it will have starting quarterback Eric Dungey, who was knocked out of Saturday’s win with a head injury. The chances for an upset are slim without him.

This makes no sense. You're either P5, or you're not. ND, I get. Army and BYU, meh, but OK. But Cinci and UConn? And not all members of the AAC will count toward the P5 nonconference requirement? What the heck is that? How do you make that determination? One could argue Temple has been better than UConn recently, but they may not make the cut? Oh Lord

Cinci and UConn to Big XII?

interesting if you go back through the games against the top 10 you could easily see we were right there to win about 10 times and many with teams far worse than we are now. a bad call, a fumble, a missed tackle, a fg , a yard short catch. we found ways to lose some, some we got blown out , but winning is not beyond the scope of reality.
