Welcome to All Soul's Day

All Souls' Day, in Christianity, is a day commemorating the faithful departed, particularly but not exclusively one's relatives.[2][3] In Western Christianity the annual celebration is now held on 2 November and is associated with All Saints' Day (1 November) and its vigil, Halloween (31 October).[4] In the liturgical books of the western Catholic Church (the Latin Church) it is called the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, and is celebrated annually on 2 November, even if this date falls on a Sunday;[5]on this day Catholics pray for the dead.[6] In Anglicanism it is calledCommemoration of All Faithful Departed and is an optional celebration; Anglicans view All Souls' Day as an extension of the observance of All Saints' Day and it serves to "remember those who have died", in connection with the theological doctrines of the resurrection of the body and theCommunion of Saints.[7][8] In the Eastern Orthodox Church and the associated Eastern Catholic Churches, it is celebrated several times during the year and is not associated with the month of November.

Beliefs and practices associated with All Souls' Day vary widely among Christian churches and denominations.

Syracuse Commit Moe Neal to Face Ex-Commit Robert Washington (thejuice; Cheng)

Here’s to the start of the Syracuse basketball season tonight! Hope springs eternal in early November. Let’s get to today’s recruiting links…

There’s a big game between Forestview and East Gaston coming up this week, and there’s extra intrigue for Syracuse fans. As we all know, SU commit Moe Neal plays for Forestview, and East Gaston features former Orange commit Robert Washington. The winner will also have a much easier road to tournament seedings that are released on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Syracuse commit Monquavion Brinson has a new highlight reel. The 2016 Mays (Ga.) defensive back is a 3-star recruit on 24/7 Sports and committed to Syracuse over the summer. Another recruit with a new set of highlights is Jalen Mayen. The 2018 quarterback from Texas has offers from Syracuse, Oregon State and Houston according to Scout.

Lindsey Scott has been invited to the Offense-Defense All-American Game in Daytona Beach, he tweeted over the weekend. The 2016 quarterback from Zachary (LA) is a three-star recruit and commited to Syracuse in early October.

Syracuse 21, Florida State 45 - What We Learned (thejuice; Cheng)

Syracuse dropped its fifth straight game of the season, 45-21, to Florida State on the road. Here’s a few thoughts from the game:

MISTAKES COST SYRACUSE AT END OF FIRST HALF

Clock management and a bad kick led to a late Florida State touchdown at the end of the first half. With 1:27 left and Syracuse at the FSU 19, Orange head coach Scott Shafer made the decision to call timeout instead of letting time run off the clock. SU scored with 56 seconds left in the first half to pull within 21-14. But Ryan Norton’s squib kick on the kickoff was shanked, giving the Seminoles the ball at their own 42 yard line. “It was a bad kick. Simple as that,” Shafer said. “He’d be the first one to tell you that.” Eight plays later, the ‘Noles found paydirt and instead of a 7-point halftime deficit, the Orange trailed by 14. “We had the timeout to use,” Shafer said. “We wanted to make sure we were organized and got the best play on the football field.”

DUNGEY STRUGGLES AGAINST FSU DEFENSE

Syracuse freshman quarterback Eric Dungey had the worst performance of his young career against the ‘Noles. Dungey completed just 11 of 24 passes for 120 yards. He was also sacked twice and his fumble shifted momentum in what was a close game in the early part of the second half. Down 28-14 with 9:14 left in the third quarter, Dungey took a keeper and pushed forward to the SU 23, where he was stripped by defensive back Derwin James. Four plays later, the Seminoles scored a touchdown, and put the game out of reach. “I don’t know if he had a chance to play well to be quite honest with you,” Shafer said. “I don’t think we did a good enough job up front to give him a chance.”

FSU Defense in for Biggest Challenge of Season Against Clemson (tallahassee.com; Deen)

Through eight games of the 2015 season, the Florida State defense is silencing its critics from a season ago.

But the Seminoles (7-1, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) are in for their biggest test of the season at No. 5 Clemson (8-0, 5-0) this Saturday.

With the addition of new defensive ends coach Brad Lawing, a renewed passion for swarming to the football, and the right mix of veteran leadership and younger players evolving into prominent roles, Charles Kelly’s defense is peaking at the right time for FSU.

The Seminoles eclipsed last season’s totals for quarterback hurries and sacks against Syracuse on Saturday, while limiting the Orange to four plays or fewer on eight of their 14 drives before giving up a punt return for a touchdown with 1:20 remaining.

As the Seminoles clicked with 575 yards of total offense under backup quarterback Sean Maguire and backup running back Jacques Patrick, starting linebacker Reggie Northrup said the defense felt the need to set the tone.

“We have to cue the edge on our team,” said Northrup, who leads the Seminoles with 55 tackles in 2015. “If something does happen where the offense not being able to score or (are short on) possessions, we’re still keeping them in the game.”

The Seminoles will need every possible opportunity to score to keep pace with the Tigers in Death Valley.

Russian Jet Disintegrated at High Altitude Over Egypt, Offical Says (PS; AP)

The Russian jetliner that crashed shortly after takeoff from an Egyptian resort city broke up at high altitude, scattering fragments of wreckage over a wide area in the Sinai Peninsula, Russia's top aviation official said Sunday as search teams raced to recover the bodies of the 224 people who died.

Meanwhile in Russia, an outpouring of grief gripped the historic city of St. Petersburg, home of many of the victims. President Vladimir Putin declared a nationwide day of mourning, and flags flew at half-staff.

Aviation experts joined the searchers in a remote part of the Sinai, seeking any clues to what caused the Metrojet Airbus A321-200 to plummet abruptly from 31,000 feet just 23 minutes after it departed from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh bound for St. Petersburg.

Aviation experts and the search teams were combing an area of 16 square kilometers (more than 6 square miles) to find bodies and pieces of the jet.

By midday, 163 bodies had been recovered, according to the Egyptian government. Some of the dead were expected to be flown to Russia later Sunday.

In St. Petersburg, hundreds of mourners brought flowers, pictures of the victims, stuffed animals and paper planes to the city's airport. Others went to churches and lit candles in memory of the dead.
