Welcome to Civil Air Patrol Day!

Six days before the Japanese Empire conducted the surprise attack upon the American military bases around Pearl Harbor, civilian and military leaders culminated three years of pioneering discussions by creating the Civil Air Patrol.

Who?

Sadly, that is the reaction of most Americans. During the post-Vietnam days, many young Americans learned to look down upon military service. (Sadly, many of them were taught that outlook by their parents — many of whom were alive to raise families because they had dodged the draft a few years earlier.) And, if people looked down upon professional military service, imagine how much more the "Me" Generation looked down upon unpaid, volunteer,para-military service. Yet, even during the darkest days of the Jimmy Carter administration, teenage Americans became CAP cadets.

Frost Warning Dropped?

Who Will Be the Next SU Football Coach? New Candidates Emerge (cnycentral; Tamurian)

It's a question being asked all over Central New York.

Who will be the next football coach for the Syracuse Orange?

Scott Frost, the current Oregon Offensive Coordinator, is the most widely rumored candidate. Sources tell me he is Syracuse's top target.

On Monday night, a new candidate emerged.

That would be current Ohio State Co-Defensive Coordinator Chris Ash.

Ash brings a solid resume with coordinator experience at Arkansas and Wisconsin in addition to his time with the Buckeyes.

His current connection to the Orange? He was a football teammate of current Syracuse Athletic Director Mark Coyle at Drake.

Ash's name was brought to me by sources, and is also being reported by several media outlets.

Scott Shafer's dismissal was announced one week ago, it's simple to presume that the timing there coincides with Coyle wanting to land his man soon.

Stay tuned to us here at CNYCentral.com for the very latest on the coaching search.

Time is Of the Essence in Search for the New Syracuse Football Head Coach (thejuice; Cheng)

Item: While sources on both coasts have indicated that Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost has been the first choice to become the 30th head football coach at Syracuse University, there’s been no deal and talks reportedly have stalled. Now with the clock ticking closer to the recruiting “quiet/dead period” from Dec. 13-Jan. 16, athletics director Mark Coyle and his trusted inner circle are scurrying to finish interviews with other candidates and talk contract with their representatives so the current team and incoming recruits know exactly who they’ll be playing for at the ‘Cuse.

With 13 current FBS coaching openings, seven of those in Power 5 conferences, and perhaps a few more college vacancies with the domino effect of NFL teams luring a big name to the pros, it’s been eight days and counting since Coyle made his decision on changing the future leadership of Orange football, and the game of musical chairs and salary offers is in full swing.

Rumors are circulating by the hour as to who’s next in Coyle’s pecking order if the Frost hire falls through, and although he says the school hasn’t reached out to him and he seemingly isn’t on the AD’s short list, onetime Syracuse assistant (1995-97) Ed Orgeron has openly expressed his desire for the job to several people with SU connections, though he’s now also being courted by new USC fulltime coach Clay Helton, the two having worked together with the Trojans from 2010-13.

However the coaching search plays out, and there will be a lot of nervous members of Orange Nation if there’s no finality by the end of the week, we’ll soon know the university’s financial commitment (or not) to Coyle to get his man to start the football fix, we’ll find out just how good that new coach is putting together his staff and wooing verbally committed recruits to stay the course, and just how good a salesman he is in bringing ACC-caliber talent into the program.

Oregon HC Mark Helfrich and OC Scott Frost

No Chip Kelly at USC, So What About Scott Frost at Syracuse? (registerguard.com; Meek)

The college football coaching shuffle, always a spawning ground for all sorts of rumor and innuendo, should be especially intense this season.

I count eight open jobs in the major conferences, although Boston College could have fired its coach three weeks ago without anybody knowing. That's eight rumored landing spots for Chip Kelly, along with a handful of jobs not yet open and a few that might not exist. (Faber College reportedly has a lucrative offer on the table.)

One school you can cross off the list is USC, which elevated interim coach Clay Helton after winning the Pac-12 South. That was accompanied by the obligatory rumor of Kelly rebuffing USC officials, which itself was rebuffed by Kelly in a news conference.

I didn't sense any Oregon fans were losing sleep over the possibility of Kelly going to a Pac-12 rival. I also doubt they're intimidated by USC promoting a coach whose team got shellacked by 20 points at Autzen Stadium two weeks ago.

It seems likely that Helton's promotion will come with staff changes at USC. Defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox, whose unit ranked in the middle of the Pac-12 in most statistical categories, could be on the market. Maybe USC can revamp its staff and surge back to greatness, but by promoting Helton, the Trojans seemed more interested in maintaining stability than shooting for the stars.

With the USC job filled, the Pac-12 could end up a spectator to most of the coaching craziness. The league doesn't have any other coaching vacancies, though that could change if some other school targets a Pac-12 coach.

For Oregon fans, the biggest question is whether, in a market flush with jobs, offensive coordinator Scott Frost ends up landing a head-coaching gig. Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated says Frost is high on the wish list for Syracuse and could be in play for Maryland as well. (I wonder how Under Amour founder Kevin Plank, Maryland's version of Phil Knight, would feel about hiring a guy from Nike's flagship school.)

OSU DC Chris Ash a 'String Candidate' for Syracuse HC Position (landgrantholyland.com; Brown)

When you hire great assistant coaches and enjoy success as a team, others are going to want to hire your assistant coaches. That's part of the game, and Ohio State knows it well, as we've seen with Tom Herman, Everett Withers and others.

With over a dozen open FBS positions now, and others likely to open this week, it seemed likely that at least one Ohio State assistant could be tied to an open position. According to one report, a Buckeye coach is a strong candidate, but maybe not for the job you might think.

Per Football Scoop, Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash is a "strong candidate" for the vacant Syracuse head coaching position:

Sources tell FootballScoop that Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash is a strong candidate for the head coaching position at Syracuse. Ash has served as co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State the past two seasons, as DC at Arkansas in 2013 and at Wisconsin in 2011 & 2012. We have not heard a timetable for a decision and were told earlier today that other candidates were still in the process.

Ohio State's defense has been nothing short of dominant this season, finishing second in the nation in scoring defense, giving up only 14 points a game, while also being near the top of the charts in many advanced statistical categories. The Buckeyes are also slated to send multiple defensive starters to the NFL Draft this season, in no small part due to their development and performance at Ohio State.

Given his previous experience at Iowa State, some thought Ash could have been a candidate there before the Cyclones quickly went with Toledo head coach Matt Campbell. Other MAC type positions could potentially look toward Ash if Syracuse doesn't work out.

Typical Ohio State fan. Neither literate or intelligent.
Not so fast. I think discussing string theory in the world of football is pretty advanced stuff.
