SU Football Recruiting: Evaluating Top Priorities for 2016, Post Quiet Period (TNIAAM; Pilatzke)

Once the dead period ends, the coaching staff will make the final push to secure commitments before National Signing Day.

Last week, Mike McAllister from At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. released hiscommitment calculator for the Syracuse Orange, discussing the top recruiting targets and his opinion about the likelihood that those recruits end up signing with Syracuse. Here, I discuss who I think are the top priorities for the Orange and the factors that will affect whether they sign with Syracuse.

Kentrail Moran, RB, O'Fallon High School, O'Fallon, Illinois

The previous coaching staff had been recruiting Moran pretty hard during this entire recruiting cycle, and the new staff picked up right where they left off. Moran committed to Illinois back in March and remains verbally committed there, but will be visiting Syracuse in January with fellow Illinois commit on January 22. Last week, Moran had this to say via Twitter:

Needless to say I like Syracuse's chances of landing Moran. I'll say 70% chance that he flips in January.

Joshua Black, DE, Harlem High School, Machesney, Illinois

Defensive end may Syracuse's most desperate need with Donnie Simmons graduating, Luke Arciniega opting to end his football career, Ron Thompson considering to enter the NFL Draft, and the indefinite suspension of Qaadir Sheppard and Amir Ealey. The new coaching staff immediately made Joshua Black a priority with an in-home visit. Black committed to Illinois back in June, but will be visiting Syracuse in January. Black has a relationship with this staff from their time at Bowling Green and has shown significant interest in the Orange. 60% chance.

Orange Watch: An Orange-Tinted Wish List for SU Athletics for the Holiday Season (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Over this annual December blitz, the Orange Watch five item holiday wish list is presented below. Each item is related to random thoughts on events that have transpired, are currently evolving, or will occur in the future, related to covering and enjoying Orange Nation’s favorite pastime of attending or watching the ‘Cuse play the games. Happy Holidays, everyone.

1) For Chancellor Syverud, the board of trustees, athletics director Mark Coyle, and other senior administrators, to give the go ahead to allow VP and Chief Campus Facilities Officer Pete Sala to (finally) publicly present the plan for the Carrier Dome renovation project early next semester.

The preview of the drawings outlining the transformation of the 36 year old building and its immediate vicinity comprising the ever-evolving western side of campus into a 21st century, amenity-filled collegiate sports and broader entertainment/hospitality venue, has been presented privately this fall to various constituency groups in Syracuse and beyond. Now it’s time to reap the recruiting benefits of a timely announcement touting the much needed modernization of the university’s (and city’s) most identifiable building, and unquestioned symbol of the athletic department.

2) More good fortune and national championships under still relatively new AD Coyle, who has deftly handled the job to these eyes since his fulltime arrival in July.

From assembling his senior level staff, a mixture of current and new managers, to publicly preaching patience while he digested the Syracuse culture by asking a lot of questions, to privately maintaining a low key management demeanor exhibited by executing his relationship and trust-building leadership skills to hire the most critical position of a Power Five conference school, the head football coach, Coyle has earned a most enthusiastic thumbs up from the majority of Orange Nation.

Pulaski's 'Bella the Deer' Survives Her 7th Straight Hunting Season (PS; Figura)

Bella, the village of Pulaski's celebrated deer that walks the community's streets with impunity, got through her 7th straight hunting season unscathed and appears to be healthy and strong.

Bella is currently 6 ½ years old. How long could she live?

"Up to 20 years, if she still has her teeth in the mouth. Also, if she's not hit by a car, killed by coyote, drowned in a swimming pool or gets strangled by a clothes line – all things that have happened to deer living in suburban and urban areas," said Brian Underwood, a U.S. Geological Survey wildlife biologist at SUNY ESF and long-time deer researcher.

Underwood said a deer's lifespan is often governed by the state and health of their teeth since they need to properly chew and grind their food to digest it. Deer in the wild have been known to live up 15 years, and longer in captivity.

He said, "unless someone makes Bella dentures," when her teeth get worn down below her gum line she won't be able to chew food properly and could die of malnutrition.

When D.J. Durkin became Maryland’s head coach earlier this month, he immediately went after some head coaches that were dismissed days prior.

Scott Shafer (defensive coordinator) and Mike London (defensive line) were two of Durkin’s first hires at Maryland. They were top priorities for the first-time head coach.

“Anytime you can surround yourself with people that have great experience and knowledge of what you’re doing, it’s a good thing to do,” Durkin said on Big Ten Network. “Both of those guys, they’re great human beings, great people, guys that are well-thought-of throughout our entire profession.

How many BG coaches are working for Babers now...and how many are still with the BG team (awaiting to come over)?

I might be wrong but I think that all the BG coaches, with the exception of Babers, are working the Bowl game. It is a nice payout for them.

I asked and yes they are all working the bowl.

In addition to the new 30,000 seat football stadium, GSU will also build a new 2,500 seat baseball stadium on the site of former Fulton County Stadium... where Hank Aaron hit #715, and many more.
