From What I Saw Of Goodine

25-6 is better than 18-14, yes.

also we werent on the bubble at all this year outside of this forum
If we won the next game we were squarely on the bubble. but that doesnt matter now anyway.

25-6 win you expect 30-2. But 18-14 when most of this board had us at 12-20 in Dec..

We played well most of the yr.. We shot poorly. Dont know how to fix that except to get better.

its like golf you can play great and miss all the 3fts putts..

the season perspective is changed because we failed to hold good leads in multiple games. that doesn't make it a bad season. 18-14.. would 21-11 make it good? Just the 2 games Hughes got hurt makes it 20-12 and 12/8 in the ACC.

Did Duke have a great season with vastly more talent at 25-6? or bad because they managed to be 4th in the ACC with all the talent?

UNC fell apart.

Just being relevant for 40 yrs where the bad yrs are bubble ish teams is more than anyone else has managed over that same time frame..

How many top teams have handled the coaching regime change well for the UCLA/Indianas/Kentucky/ UNCs of the world?

Would love it if we were better.. History has shown this aint an easy thing to do for any period of time. Sometimes coaching is just about luck too.

Huh? We were historically bad on Defense. Like the worst in JB’s tenure. There is no reality where this was going to be a successful season. The talent and athleticism isn’t there. JB is responsible for that. And Playing the same 2 guards and 6 players to grind out an NIT bid while losing 30 percent of the roster doesn’t fill me with confidence for the future.

So dont try to win the games? Are we in HS now? 5-10 more minutes a game wasnt gonna keep him here if playing time was what he wanted? if he wasnt good enough to take time away from the 2 ahead of him then where is he going to get the 30 min he wants?

he never play at any level where he earned 20 min so should they have lost all those games by 10 to give him minutes or try to win them?

Buddy has one skill and played 36 minutes a game, and happens to be the coach’s kid. If you think this isn’t a factor here you are insane.

metrics based on whose idea on what good D is? I think the coaches know where they want the kids to be far better than random math guys.

I will give you he is a bit slow at times.

You can be in the right place in a zone and not really be near most anyone and you can be standing next to the guy with the ball and be in the totally wrong place..

if Goodine was playing better D or better O than Buddy he would have been playing more minutes, JB doesnt favor guys that dont give him a better chance to win.

Thats not to say more minutes wouldnt make some of these kids better, but this isnt football where the scout team kids play, in BBALL the 2nd team is going against the 1st team all the time. Thats why practice does make you better and how you practice matters.

I posted these in another thread as well. Buddy is a solid offensive player. He is bad on defense. When paired with JGIII, we are very bad up too. This is a snippet:

Buddy has done a lot of good, but out of the starters he’s last in the following advanced stats:

Box plus minus
Defensive box plus minus
WS/40 (win shares)
WS (ties for last with JGIII)
DWS
Steal %
Total Rebound %
PER

Might it be possible that we failed to hold good leads cuz we were playing guys too many minutes every night?

We weren't getting in unless we won the ACCt.

you saw, at most, 201 minutes all season

jb saw that much on a typical monday

if Goodine was playing better D or better O than Buddy he would have been playing more minutes, JB doesnt favor guys that dont give him a better chance to win, until this year, when he decided we couldn’t stop anyone, so he gave favor to the offensive players at guard.

fify

I saw a kid looking over his shoulder most games, playing tentatively. I heard, but didn’t see, that this attitude changed during the game buddy got hurt

The myth that players magically and automatically “develop” by being given minutes...we’ve had a lot of guys who played early that never became players. And we’ve had a lot of guys barely play early on that became players.

Freshman season “minutes” don’t make or break “development” either way.

Some offense and defense ppp from synergy.

Buddy ranks 78% in offense ppp
ranks 21% in defense ppp

Goodine ranks 23% in defense ppp
ranks 7% in offense ppp

So the numbers show buddy sucked at defense but Goodine sucked too.

Offense isn’t even debatable.

It’s quite simple. JB isn’t going to give a kid minutes just to keep him happy, and not make him earn it. If Brycen didn’t want to stick around, and work for his playing time, then so be it. This isn’t new. MCW got 10 MPG as a freshman. He stuck it out, and earned his keep. With only two other guards to contend with, plus a freshman, BG would have been given an opportunity to do the same. If he thought he couldn’t do enough to show JB that he should play over Buddy, then best of luck to him. We’ve had guard rotations in the past with 3 guys who all got time. Scoop, Triche, and Dion. All in the 20 to 25 MPG range in 2011-2012.

As much as everyone wants to argue, it really wasn’t going to be insurmountable to get a chance to play 20-25 MPG. He wants 30+, then fine, go get it at URI. Don’t want a kid who thinks he’s entitled to time anyway. Kadary will have his shot to fight for those minutes now. And JB wants to win more than any of you. Buddy is playing because JB believes that gives us the best shot to do so. Period.

comparing an 18-14 team to a team that went to the elite 8 is silly.

I’m not comparing. Just pointing out that JB will play 3 guys at guard. Flynn, Devo, Andy. If you’re good enough, you can find time. Is 07-08 better? 21-14. The dynasty debacle. Scoop found a way to get 20 MPG with Flynn, and Devo here.

he ran a 3 guard offense this year, too. and probably will again in 21-22 with joe, buddy & kadary. he does it a lot even if people insist on calling the one who draws the shjt end of the stick on defense a forward

Right or wrong, JB's approach to playing time for major D-1 is unorthodox. Very few coaches are content to play their 2-4 (depending on the year) top players 37-40 minutes a game. There are serious drawbacks to this approach. Tough hitting those critical jumpers down the stretch when you're gassed. Also tough pressing people at that juncture. You're also vulnerable to foul trouble situations or injuries when u have to revert to playing guys that have been watching from the pine the whole time.
