Here are the year-by-year leaders in base production, (total bases + walks + steals), and run production, (runs scored + runs batted in – home runs so they aren’t counted twice). Some stats are not available for some years so I used what stats we do have. Stolen Bases were not recorded from 1876-86 and the American Association didn’t record Runs Batted In from 1882-84, although Total Baseball has some RBI numbers for some players. If a player played for more than one major team in a season, even if they were in different leagues, I used his totals for the year and “assigned” them to the team and league for which he led played the most that year. The number in parenthesis is the average number of bases/runs per game.

A few of my all time faves on your list/research procect...
Rod Carew, Ricky Henderson, Ken Griffey Jr. and Albert Pujols.
Amazing how good #7 Mickey Mantle was, but I was born in '67.

I think it passes the "look" test. The right names are on the top. Where there are surprises it suggests maybe we need to know more about the guy who led. You can also see the trends of baseball history- the "dead" ball era, (when they tried to play the whole game with the same ball), the "live" ball era, (when they started to replace them with new ones during the games), the 60's, (when Ford Frick raised the mound and increased the strike zone to protect the record book after Maris), the modern era of hitter's parks, steroids, and I believe, a juiced ball.

I actually did top tens for all the years and the right names appear constantly in that, too. But it went on for 75 pages so I only posted the leaders. I'm working on something similar for the NBA using "Net Points".

Here's something else I did with the top tens I put together. I wanted some all-time rankings but to factor out statistical differences in the eras so i looked at the #10 guy in each listing and gave him one point. Then I gave the players ahead of him that one point plus the number of bases or runs they were ahead of the #10 guy. Here's an example using the 2012 American League runs standings:

2012 American League
Runs
Miguel Cabrera DET 204
Josh Hamilton TEX 188
Mike Trout LA 182
Robinson Cano NY 166
Curtis Granderson NY 165
Adrian Beltre TEX 161
Edwin Encarnacion TOR 161
Prince Fielder DET 161
Albert Pujols LA 160
Josh Willingham MIN 160

Alex Rios CHI 159

Rios gets one "run", Willingham and Pujols 2 each, Beltre, Encarnacion and Fielder 3 each, Granderson 7, Cano 8, Trout 24, Hamilton 30, Cabrera 46.

By adding the cumulative totals from year to year, I came up with this top 50 for bases produced, (above 10th), over the years:

Babe Ruth 2136
Lou Gehrig 1704
Ty Cobb 1440
Ted Williams 1436
Barry Bonds 1374
Stan Musial 1357
Jimmie Foxx 1136
