Hofstra / Vermont and Yale Scrimmages

Not to focus too much on a minute long highlight reel, but a couple things stood out for me - 1) that Cook goal was really nice, first the extra pass from Rhefuss to Cook on the doorstep was next level, then the amount of fakes Cook put on the goalie was really something. Very excited to see this new attack line. 2) It looks like Quinn scores a nice goal, but he is not credited in the write-up. Having a sixth midfielder who can score with regularity is going to be a huge benefit. Lastly 3) can anyone make out who scores the last goal in the video? It is certainly impressive, he manages to back down his defender and score over him, very psychical.

Probably just an injury away from potentially burning a r/s with either Clary or Page. Seems like they're primarily rotating 6 on defense w/ Mellen, Murphy, DP, Helmer, Kennedy, & Fernandez.

Staats is an option as well.

Where did you get the video? I can't seem to find any video anywhere.

Deep at attack and middle. Seebold and Berkman could step right in , Quinn, Magnan Kim, Fiorini all present good options on second.

Important to keep Phaup fresh , Varello shares reps of course but also some Garlow usage could help both. Same with athletic D, gotta keep legs fresh for game days.

Syracuse
After taking off to an early 3-0 lead, the Orange allowed four consecutive goals. The scene: A TD Ierlan face-off win and opponent goal in transition is something Syracuse has seen dating back to Ierlan’s days at Albany. On Sunday, Syracuse stopped the run shorter than it has in the past.

Junior face-off specialist Jakob Phaup beat Ierlan on a few clamps and played physical on 50-50 groundballs. Phaup, a former high school wrestler, often forces groundball scrums and takes face-offs when senior Danny Varello, considered by coaches to have quicker hands, isn’t winning the draws clean. Ierlan finished 10 of 20 at the X, while Phaup won 11 of 18 and Varello 4 of 11.

“It helps (to stop the runs) if we could win some face-offs, which Phaup did and our wings did,” Syracuse head coach John Desko said. “But they're going to get those runs especially with (Ierlan) facing off like he does.”

After an early turnover ended Syracuse’s prior man-up, Chase Scanlan absorbed a big hit on the crease, which earned Syracuse a man advantage for two minutes. During the two-minute non-releasable penalty, the Bulldogs defense pressed out and Syracuse scored three goals.

Two came from sophomore attack Griffin Cook, who led Syracuse with three goals. Twice on the man-up Cook moved around an open crease area, caught a pass near the cage and finished quickly with a goal. The other Syracuse goal also came near the net as Stephen Rehfuss flung a pass across the crease to a leaping Scanlan for a quick-release goal.

“If they’re going to press out, let them press out and make them pay for it,” Scanlan said.

Scanlan (2G, 3A) finished tied with Cook for the Syracuse lead in points with five. Meanwhile Syracuse’s first line midfield — Jamie Trimboli, Brendan Curry and Tucker Dordevic — combined for one goal and one assist. Though a Dordevic dodge midway through the game, might’ve been the highlight of the scrimmage.

Yale scores came off unsettled situations.. Cuse had some issues with ten man rides and some early unforced to's besides some early Ierlan grab and go's. D looked very good in settled 6-6. On ball d on their excellent attack was superb.

Man up will again be very good . Starr stopped many good mf shots. Opponents are going to have a difficult time deciding who to pole. Pick your poison as neither Cook or Scanlan can be short sticked.

Phaup can be a top ten fogo if kept fresh

It is early for Yale , respect their talent and readiness . Cuse did demonstrate strengths agaisnt a very good team.

In the Yale section they give SU defense some credit, specifically Mellen and Kennedy. I am assuming they were responsible for guarding Morrill and Brandau. -

"In settled offense, Yale went stale at times. With defenders like Nick Mellen and Brett Kennedy, Syracuse is quick and spent much of the afternoon extended out on Yale’s players. It led to several possessions dwindling down to the final seconds of the shot clock before an errant shot ran wide of the cage.

Yale’s top two scorers from a year ago, attackmen Jackson Morrill and Matt Brandau, combined for two goals."

Mellen marked Brandau, Kennedy had Morrill. Early for Yale players indeed but talent on Yale attack is special, those two attack men are AA's for sure but neither were able to dodge and the ball hit carpet several times. DiPietro also looked good. Inexperienced unit but athletic and jellling quicker than expected.

Murphy is a versatile ,sound physical defender as well . He'll smash and provide a different look at times. Can play ssdm but gonna be most needed in rotation at close

where's the video?

Gonna guess Dordevic was poled shortly after this.

Some quality footage in this new Lax Factor video. Cool that he gets access to these and gets to talk to the players. Once again some very high praise for Cook, including some good footage of him dusting a long pole. Goes as far as calling him the best offensive player on the field. Other interesting bits of info include Mellen naming Aviles as an SSDM. DePietro appears to be solidifying his starting spot on close D. Good clip of Phaup winning a clean faceoff against TD Ierlan. Thank you Lax Factor guy if you're out there!

I was able to watch the highlights with the sound off. I will listen to the commentary soon.

Those are encouraging signs you mentioned. So, SSDMs are Dearth, Murphy, Barlow, Small, Aviles and Oladunmoye? Seems good as long as the top guys are healthy. Will face offs decline without Kennedy there?

If Cook plays well, the offense should be able to really hum.

Looking forward to Friday!!!

I believe he mentioned that Kennedy and Fernandez played the wings on face-offs with Death in the defensive end.

I believe that is the list yes. Mellen listed off a few ssdm guys and for whatever reason he did not mention Murphy or Bret Barlow, but I wouldn't read into that too much. Just seemed to be listing names off the top of his head. We know Murphy will see the field in some capacity barring injury. And as CuseAlum87 mentioned, Lax Factor guy said Kennedy was playing on the faceoff wing with Fernandez.
