He has been good against ND his whole career if memory serves. Who knows why :noidea:

Could be the "Irishness" of ND that rubs our players of Irish-extraction the wrong way. McNamara used to go off too.

I dont think nd plays that tough 94 ft pressure d. Thats our kriptonite

Cooney's game against ND two years ago --the game after the Duke win at home-- is his best game ever. He scored over 50% of the team's points. The highest % of pts. by an SU player in the past 30 years plus.

The first half might have been one of his best halves ever. Very even-keeled and productive on offense and extremely active on defense (both Cooney and Gbinije were greatly improved in shutting down drives from the perimeter).

The first couple minutes of the second half were a reversion to the head-scratching freshmen play that frustrates some: stripped going up for a three from the far wing, made an excellent steal and save on defense, then took a deep and contested "Please never attempt that" airball from the near wing early in the shot clock, then didn't raise his hand toward a Notre Dame shooter who made a three.

He had a really nice three-point play in the first half and also made a 15-footer off a dribble-drive to his right; that and his threes were the difference between our huge lead and a 29-27 score at the half. Terrific first-half performance by Cooney.

His defense has been much, much better lately.

Everyone's improved since Boeheim returned, but he and Gbinije were especially good against both Duke and Notre Dame. With our center situation, we need every bit of that. Huge effort by those two. (It helped that the other team didn't seem to have a point guard last night.)

Notre Dame has never exactly trotted a Gary Payton type out there to guard our guards. Our guys go crazy against them.

He was suffering formm the "I'm in the zone and unstoppable" syndrome that so many college kids fall into. Unfortunately he does not have the talent for that to happen for to long a period of time, ie 2 halves.

With Cooney, you have to worry about his "NET" performance. That is, the good things he does minus the mistakes. Last night he did so many good things that a few errors were inconsequential.

In games where his net performance hasn't been all that good it has been because he has been asked to carry more of the offensive load than he should have been. But with improvement of Gbinije and the emergence of Mali and Lyden, he is able to be more selective ... although sometimes he forgets.

he got whistled for traveling off the curl again. You could tell Boeheim was razzing him for that as he was coming back up the court. He was shaking his head and saying, "I know, I know"

It was a really good game for Cooney - in the bigger picture, at least a B or B+ performance. Notre Dame 2014 or North Carolina earlier this season might have been better individual games, but it's a lot prettier when those other guys can raise their games along with him. In that case selectivity is a very good trait.

The ultimate pool sharpie. Hustled us for 3 years and then flipped the switch. If he was a betting man he would be a rich man, collecting his chips this year. Did he learn from XMAS? Roberson will follow suit.

How quick we forget. Cooney has had many outstanding performances. Just a week ago he was putting up 21 points in the first 9 minutes of a road ACC game.

I was laughing during last night's game, thinking to myself: "I wonder if ND fans know that Syracuse fans hate Cooney and think he sucks?"

Might have something to do with the fact that Brey's teams never play defense. JB was praising the Irish offense in pre-game chatter, but never once touched on their defensive capabilities. All you need to know.
