What’s the recovery time for a dislocated shoulder or broken collarbone?

The school didn’t specify the injury or say how long he will be out...

Don’t think a broken collarbone would result in a one armed sling. at least it didn’t when I had one when I was a kid.

So, fingers crossed, back in time for Purdue or UVa? Otherwise, rest him through the Bye week.

I am the self-proclaimed dislocated shoulder expert. If it is the first one (dislocation), and it is popped back into place relatively soon after the dislocation, he should be back at in about 3 weeks.

If it has happened multiple times, or there has been damage to head of the humerous (the ball that fits into the shoulder socket), then recovery is longer and it might need surgery. In short, a dislocation stretches all the ligaments and if you're not careful the condition will become chronic and need intervention. That all said, it is a relatively minor injury if there are no extenuating circumstances.

I can confirm. Everything you said is right on. Shoulder dislocations deterred my football career.

Could also be a separated shoulder (AC joint). Depending on the grade of separation, recovery would be from 2 weeks to 2 months.

I used to play baseball with a kid that had an elbow that was always dislocating. It was gross. Every time it happened the recovery was longer than the previous time. Eventually quit playing when he was 17. Good player, definitely could haves played at a SUNY school.

Owen Hiltz missed the whole past lax season with a cracked collarbone.

I wonder what kinds of pitches he was throwing. I've heard athletic trainers and physical therapists talk about how kids are learning pitches that are straining their immature arms too much (hence the huge increase in Tommy John surgeries in kids). I hate the idea that a kid has to give up a sport simply because adults get too aggressive/ambitious.

one reason that if more kids learned changeups instead of curveballs as the off speed pitch early on it would be better for their arms.

Yeah. I've specifically heard an athletic trainer say he doesn't think curveballs should be taught until college.

I had a high grade 3 ac joint separation from a mountain biking accident. had surgery and my recovery was about 6 months (of course I was 40 when it happened not 19 or 20 so my recovery was certainly slower)

My son had the same. He didn’t have surgery though because they recommended against it at his age of 14 at the time. He was out for about 2 months with a lot of PT. They strengthen the muscles around the joint instead of a screw with surgery. He still has a bump on top of his shoulder.

Well, let's just hope that as a wide receiver, Jones was catching not throwing :)

Precisely.

Throwing curve balls at a young age is even more problematic than throwing fast balls. My son in his youth/younger days played a lot of ball, travel, etc. He pitched, caught as well, along with playing short. The area of concern at such an age is the growth plate. One year he had to shut down ball all together due to his elbow pain, etc. in that (growth plate) area after seeing a specialist.
