If you take a 3 year average of their yards per game, we're 102nd.

These were averages of averages. avg ypg 2009 + avg ypg 2010 + avg ypg 2011 all divided by 3. just in case you're nitpicky.

We're in the 90s each individual year.

So what this tells me is that most teams that have offenses as bad as our each year, don't stay that bad in neighboring years. If we're never in the 100s for an individual marrone year but are in the 100s for all 3 years combined, that tells me that other shartty offenses in any one year aren't as sharty in the other 2 years.

Here are the BCS conf teams worse than us over Marrone's 3 years.
Washington State
Minnesota
Rutgers
Vanderbilt
BC

It's barely better than the Robinson years.

You would have to be crazy to give a 3rd year starting job to a qb of an offense this bad.

Ok and VT moved up and they still have the same OC and HC ... they sucked with the same coaching staff that now has them top 40 ... bad example. Had they changed coaches I could see using them. As for UCLA they moved up 18 slots ... we moved up 16 again a sliver's difference bad example. Temple advanced 5 more slots ... Virginia only 2 more slot ... another bad example since that difference is very slim. Also for UVA you have a team with an SOS that went like the following: 2007 50th in Division 1, 2008 9th in Division 1, 2009 18th in Division 1, 2010 65th in Division 1, 2011 67th in Division 1 ... don't think that SOS didn't help that much? Plus the one thing that gets overlooked when it comes to this season vs last season ... in 2010 SU's SOS was 85th in Division 1, this year it is 48th. And if you look at SU's SRS (Simple Rating System; a rating that takes into account average point differential and strength of schedule.)

SU has done the following:

2007 -10.72
2008 -9.00
2009 -4.41
2010 1.29
2011 -2.19

Marrone posted a positive SRS for the first time at SU since 2003. We have only had a positive SRS 4 times since 1999, that is God awful. We saw our SOS improve by 100% from 2010 to 2011, lost several key components on both sides of the football (Bart, Carter, Smith, Hogue, etc.) and expected drastic improvement? Honestly? You can bend those offensive stats to read one way but when you read between the lines there is more to it than just looking at averages. And for what its worth the SRS for Auburn this season is the smallest its been since 2008 and is the second worst SRS they've recorded since 1998 ... the SRS is a nice indicator since it accounts for SOS as well as margin of victory ... Also UNC's SOS is the lowest its been since 2007 as well ... there are so many factors that go into this that you should look at the bigger picture. Am I happy with the offense? Hell no ... we need some game breakers but its not as black and white as saying oh this year we ranked x and last year we ranked y ...

fwiw i wasn't arguing that people need to get fired. (hackett should go though but i'll give them another year if they start a different qb) they do need to play a different qb though. and everyone knows the defense is better than the robinson years.

i didn't pick those other school examples to help my case, i just dumped them all in leaving out no name colleges. wanted to give full context

SOS changes for everyone over years, that's part of why looking at multiple years is good. if our schedule was so easy last year, our offense should've been better and the average numbers wouldn't look so bad

Agreed on the better offense last season, it should have been but my true point is knowing last year our offense sucked and our SOS was that much lighter our expectations and hopes for change this season were greater than what we should have expected is ultimately my point. I agree with the SOS changing which is why SRS is such a nice number since in theory if your SOS gets weaker your SRS should improve ... in our case with the exception of this season it Marrone has us on an upward trend. We saw a significant leap from 08 to 09 and then 09 to 10 ... we took a small step back this season but I expect us to trend back forward again this upcoming season. I think his recruits will make a difference although we still must consider that in theory his senior class next season will be all of 10 guys or so that were picked up during a bad transition period. The junior class would be his first full class and I am willing to give the staff the benefit of the doubt.
