Maryland AD's Deficit

Was just going to post this... This is a textbook lesson on how not to run an AD. They are selling out their sports programs from their natural rivalries and alumni networks to try and help make up shortfalls by the administration.

Have fun in the B1G being a doormat along with Rutty. B1G loves recruiting the financially savvy institutions.

Didn't Maryland fire a coach that just won 10 games the season or 2 before? They seem like a rudderless ship that just doesn't make sound financial decisions...possibly too many chiefs kind of thing perhaps? Definitely a school that can not live among their needs.

Given the financial situation at Maryland would a realistic option emerge to STAY in the ACC?

With the new TV contract and the potential to receive the $15M that the ACC withheld last year (and an assumed additional $15M this year) does that provide Maryland with enough incentive to stay put when you also consider that it seems the 2017/18 projected 'profitability point' isn't quite going to happen. I say that because it appears that the university's projections for football tickets and arena utilization have not met what was predicted and per athlete spending is far below the B1G norm. It might be several more years, than what was projected, before the athletic dept can become 'profitable' again. Clearly, the B1G offers more money long-term, but from what has been published it may be 5 or more years before Maryland sees a full portion of B1G revenue. At some point you've got to wonder when the athletic deficit is to big to recover from.

Add to that the Commission's "concern about being able to compete against better funded Big Ten teams..." and it makes one wonder if staying in the ACC may become a realistic consideration.

Honestly, they should shut the athletics program down if it's that bad.

Of all the programs that jumped conferences, Maryland's decision is without question the most head-scratching.

At least in the case of WVU they were just trying to make the best of a dire situation. If they didn't hop to the Big 12, as ill a fit as that is, they'd probably be in the AAC for the foreseeable future (which is the 70s polyester leisure suit of fits no matter the geography).

Maryland is going to make some incremental amount of money in the B1G vs the ACC (although I still believe it'll be less of a windfall than some suggest), and trash most everything else about their athletic programs.

The Big Ten would sue the bejeezus out of Maryland.

As a parent, I would have major concerns about sending my kid to Maryland. Even if the answer is not a penny, how much of the tuition per student goes towards offsetting this debt is a question that would eat at me.

It may be a blessing for the Big 10 if Maryland didn't go, go after Texas and OU hard instead of Maryland and Rutgers. The problem is they would lose patsies and have too much competition for the flagships of OSU and Michigan.

Why would Texas join the B1G?

Why would Texas join the B1G?

Just a couple of possible reasons. Get out of a Texas centric conference plus jealousy over A&M's success in the SEC. Stable conference. Academics.

Here is a forgotten snippet from an older thread titled The ACC and UMD were back in court yesterday...

"Maryland has not yet filed an official notice and need not do so before Aug. 15, 2013, in order to join the Big Ten Conference in 2014," Kuchno said in a motion filed recently with the court. "Maryland is not presently subject to the Withdrawal Penalty (regardless of its enforceability) and remains an ACC member with full rights and privileges," the motion said.

Um....that's tomorrow. Anyone have any news on this?

Texas makes more $$$ than anyone in college sports.

They only need themselves.

I agree but if there is going to be a playoff type thing going on they may want to go to the safehouse big 10.

Interesting that the ACC has, to date, withheld approximately $15mm in payouts to the Twerps.
Normal practice. Money will be applied to the exit fee.
I'm sure that Syracuse's 2nd payment toward its exit fee was paid by way of withheld conference payouts.

They better hope they don't have to pay that exit fee because they are in a world of pain according to this article.

And follow through on the logic for a moment.

The Big 10 goes hard after Maryland to destabilize the ACC in retaliation for Notre Dame and (supposedly) sniffing around Penn State. So they are willing to take on a foreclosed athletic department, which is going to be in such financial distress that it won't be able to function at a high level for years and years, decreasing the overall competition level in the conference... all the while counting on soaking the cable subscribers of Maryland for BTN fees, regardless of whether Maryland will be able to field a good product for the locals to watch.

Sounds like Germany and Greece/Spain.

That's the ONLY thing the B1G cared about.

And locksley gets a bonus if their recruit rankings are in rvls top whatever.
