Mellen / Dearth Injury Updates

Ugh, really hope Dearth can go. Mellen starting to get into some dangerous territory now that we're talking a month + absence. No Phaup mention though so that seems positive

Phaup is OK.

Waiting a little more on Mellen. Don't want to risk a reinjury, and with Kennedy down low there's no urgency.

Shows how fickle injuries can be, his looked the worst live. Another tweet said still no potential return date or target for Mellen. Real bad sign

Dearth's looked bad to, hopefully it's a just a slight strain, didn't look like it at the time

Yeah my initial thought was the same but in lax sometimes those strains resolve quickly depending on the grade. Still if I was betting I would think hes probably out this week. Still the fact that he's already close is a great sign.

If Syracuse lacrosse’s matchup with Johns Hopkins this weekend was the NCAA tournament, Nick Mellen might play.

That’s how close the Orange’s standout defender is to being cleared from a lower-body injury, SU head coach John Desko said on Wednesday. But even when Mellen is able to play, Desko said, that doesn’t mean he’ll suit up immediately.

“He has a type of injury where he could re-injure it and we don’t really want to put him in that situation,” Desko said. “And with (Brett) Kennedy making that nice adjustment playing down low, we really don’t feel that sense or urgency to get him out there. So our main concern is that he’s 100 percent so he doesn’t re-injure it and he’s good for the rest of the year.”

SU faceoff specialist Jakob Phaup is expected to play against the Blue Jays after leaving the team’s 21-13 win against Hobart, Desko said.

Phaup, a junior, ranks seventh in the nation in faceoff win percentage at 69.8. He and senior Danny Varello (14th, 61.5) have combined to give the Orange one of the nation’s best FOGO units through four games.

Senior defensive midfielder Peter Dearth is day-to-day, Desko said. He suffered a lower-body injury against the Statesmen. It’s currently unclear if he’ll play this weekend.

Desko also said that redshirt freshman attack Mikey Berkman is out for the year. Berkman suffered an apparent knee injury in SU’s 17-4 win over Binghamton on Feb. 15.

Obviously would like all of them back but hearing Phaup okay is a huge boost. Dearth injury is big but Dami and Aviles looked good last week (in fact Dearth got beat the worst of any SSDM on a simple ally dodge by a Hobart middie, FWIW). Mellen is what it is but hope he is back for Rutgers, have to imagine he'll be rusty whenever he returns and might take some time to get back to his old self. Game would have been made simpler if Mellen were back to take on Epstein, now have to weigh if its better for Kennedy to be on (maybe) limited Epstein or take on the bigger Williams?

Mellen was doing spring jumps on sidelines so surprised he's not a go. Would miss Dearth's size vs JHU but id be cautious with him based on what's been noticed. Helmer and Barlow could see greater minutes this game.

Agreed, something seems a bit off was told he was close for Hobart. Perhaps Desko is playing possum

Glad Desko has enough confidence in the defense so far that he can afford to be so patient with Mellen and I don't think he's wrong. SSDM has been a strength so far and I think the match-ups still favor the Orange this weekend.

I would be okay with holding Mellen out till Duke just to be on the super-safe side. Barring a major defensive collapse against the jays, I think the current D group is holding and will hold their own just fine.

Mellen's injury is "Muscular" ! Knew it was the kiss of death from Desktop. He almost shouldn't say anything afterwards.

Mellen will be fine, moving around well. Wouldn't surprise me if he dresses. More bothersome right now is Dearth day to day status. Thankfully Phaup is a go as both Prouty and Narewski are around 62%.
