Newest SU Verbal Troy Henderson Chose Orange Over Nebraska and Rutgers Becaise of LB Coach Clark Lea (PS; Bailey)

For recent Syracuse commit Troy Henderson, there was one clear variable that pushed the Orange ahead of other finalists Nebraska and Rutgers in his recruitment: Clark Lea.

Henderson raved about the SU linebackers coach in an interview on Thursday, in which he detailed his decision as well as his mindset heading into his senior season at St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) High School.

"The relationship me and him have is just better than the ones I had with the other two linebackers coaches," Henderson said. "He's just a person that I want to be around. He just seems like he was the right guy for me."

SU OLB Cam Lynch Expects More Blitzing, Use of Okie Package in 2014 (PS; Bailey)

With Jay Bromley off to the NFL to start his professional career with the New York Giants, his void poses arguably the greatest question for the Syracuse defense this season: how is it going to get to the quarterback?

Bromley's 10 sacks were nearly double SU's next-best pass-rusher in 2013, and that was fellow draftee Marquis Spruill. Outside linebacker Cameron Lynch and defensive end Robert Welsh are the team's returning sack leaders at four each. And promising defensive tackle John Raymon is unlikely to play this season as he continues to rehab from a severe knee injury.

"If you lose a third-round draft pick defensive tackle, what you do is during passing downs you get in the Okie and you just blitz more," Lynch said at the ACC Football Kickoff on Sunday. "Have somebody cover up the middle, have the same defensive ends that we've had all year and blitz the linebackers more. Do it that way."

SU LT Sean Hickey Reveals How Close He Was to Leave SU for the NFL, Talks Possible Insurance Policy (PS; Mink)

Syracuse left tackle Sean Hickey says he doesn't make decisions based on "raw emotions." And in the case of deciding to return to school for a fifth season instead of enter the 2014 NFL Draft, Hickey acknowledged it was every bit the "cold, calculated decision" that led him to Syracuse to begin with.

It was not easy turning down the opportunity to enter the draft, Hickey said, and he said if he was projected as a surefire second- or third-round pick, "you probably wouldn't be talking to me today."

But the third-to-fifth round projections were enough to convince him to stay. So did a meeting with strength and conditioning coach Will Hicks, who told him he had room to further develop his body, particular the lower half.

Hickey's return has given Syracuse an anchor on the offensive line and one of the best left tackles in the ACC. It has also led him to consider taking out an insurance policy this year for total disability or loss of value.

SU LT Sean Hickey Believes Syracuse OL is Deepest Since 2012 (PS; Mink)

Syracuse will open camp with a couple of position battles on the offensive line.

Center won't be one of them after John Miller emerged in the spring as the replacement for All-ACC pick Macky MacPherson.

But the preseason depth chart painted the picture that Syracuse believes it is three-deep at tackle and guard, giving the Orange at least seven game-ready offensive linemen.

Left tackle Sean Hickey, who opted to return for a fifth season, believes this year's unit is tied with the 2012 offensive line as the deepest since he arrived.

"Right now I think we have three starting guards," Hickey said Sunday here at the 2014 ACC Football Kickoff. "Omari (Palmer), he's got to beat out a two-year starter or a one-year starter. That's tough to do. It really is. It's a good situation for the team. Individually for one of them, it might not be a good situation."

Omari Palmer

SU Releases Preseason Depth Chart: Palmer, Lasker Listed in Front of Returning Starters on OL (PS; Mink)

The preseason depth chart for the Syracuse football team was released Sunday in the team's media guide, and there are two big changes to note since the end of spring practice.

One is the emergence of left guard Omari Palmer. He will open training camp as the starter over Rob Trudo, who started all 13 games there last season.

And senior Adonis Ameen-Moore, who rarely saw the field last year, is listed as the primary backup to running back Prince-Tyson Gulley.

Syracuse opens training camp in early August and will againspend part of camp at Fort Drum.

With Palmer's emergence, the offensive line appears to be a position of strength for the Orange this year. With Michael Lasker and returning starter Ivan Foy battling for the starting right tackle position, the Orange should feel confident it has at least seven game-ready players up front.

SU to Start Selling Individual Game Tickets on August 6th Except for FSU (PS; Carlson)

When defending national champion Florida State visits Syracuse on Oct. 11, it promises to be a hot ticket.

The Syracuse athletic department is taking full advantage of it.

When Syracuse starts selling individual football tickets to the general public on Aug. 6, fans won't be able to secure a spot to watch the Seminoles and Heisman winner Jameis Winston.

Joe Giansante, the chief of communications for the Syracuse athletic department, said the order of sales for Florida State tickets begins with three-game packages that include games against Villanova, Florida State and any other game of the customer's choice.

Poll: Does SU Have a True Rivalry Game in 2014? (PS; Bailey)

Intensity. Dislike. Pride. The three variables that make up most good rivalries.

For Syracuse, Rutgers isn't walking through the Carrier Dome doors in the expected future. But the Orange does face a couple potential rivals next season in Pittsburgh and Boston College.

SU also hosts Duke for the first time as an Atlantic Coast Conference member, but it appears unlikely that the budding basketball rivalry carries over to the gridiron — for now, anyway.

On Sunday, left tackle Sean Hickey discussed potential rivalry games for Syracuse in its second ACC season, citing the two other former Big East members.

Now, we want to know what you think. Vote on our poll and back up your response in the comments section below.

SU Football Closer to Establishing Rivals Heading into Second ACC Season (PS; Bailey)

With a full year of Atlantic Coast Conference competition under its belt, Syracuse is moving farther and farther away from some of the traditional Big East rivalries that often highlighted the team's schedule.

With that in mind, syracuse.com checked in with Syracuse tackle Sean Hickey and a number of other opposing players at the ACC Football Kickoff on Sunday to see if any matchups are developing a rivalry-esque feel.

"There's Pitt, just because we've played them forever," Hickey said. "Based off the games from last year, we've seen Wake Forest a couple times. I never got a Rutgers-type vibe from anybody, like Rutgers or one of the old Big East rivalries.

"I would say Pitt is probably our biggest rival just because of familiarity. Now, maybe in two or three years it might be different. A rival might emerge."

UNC QB Marquise Williams Roomed with Terrel Hunt at the Manning Passing Academy Last Week

Jameis Winston, Marquise Williams Talk About Meeting Terrel Hunt (PS; Bailey)

Florida State's Jameis Winston and North Carolina's Marquise Williams got to know Syracuse quarterback Terrel Hunt at Manning Passing Academy last weekend.

Williams roomed and worked out regularly with Hunt while Winston woke him up early for breakfast one morning.

On Sunday, the two Atlantic Coast Conference quarterbacks shared their thoughts on SU's second-year starter.

"I know he'll have a lot of success playing quarterback, and he had a good performance against us," Winston said. "Our defense was the best defense in the country and I think that was one of his first starts."

Winston said that he roots for every ACC team in non-conference games. He hopes to break the stigma that the conference is a weaker one on the football field.

ACC Commish John Swofford Encouraged by new NCAA Governnance Structure Proposal (PS; Stevens)

ACC commissioner John Swofford is encouraged by the proposals on governance structure set forth by a Division I steering committee and is optimistic they will be adopted in August so implementation can begin in the fall.

Swofford, speaking at the ACC's annual Kickoff event, said there is compromise in the proposal but that an important part of it — a substantial measure of autonomy for the five most powerful conferences — is included.

The governance proposal released Friday will allow those leagues (the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC) greater flexibility in addressing athlete welfare.

"The good ship status quo has sailed, and it's time for some changes and some significant changes, and it's going to present some challenges, but it's time for that, and those are the right kinds of things to do and to address," Swofford said.

FSU QB Jameis Winston Center of Attention at ACC Football Kickoff Event (PS; Stevens)

Rarely has the entrance of a player at the ACC's Football Kickoff required a conference official to ask for a walkway to be cleared.

Never has a reigning Heisman Trophy winner held court at the preseason event, where questions of when the ACC will emerge as a football power were ubiquitous almost as long as sweet tea and vinegar-based barbecue in this corner of the college sports universe.

Until Sunday, anyway, when Florida State's Jameis Winston took his turn in front of a media horde. Reporters stood four deep around a few rows of chairs as Winston himself took a seat shortly after teammate P.J. Williams did the same.

It was a scene that could be interpreted in several ways, including a few explanations that might not be overly flattering for everyone assembled to listen. But this was not a setting to consider the deeper sociological meanings of any microscope effect; time, after all, was short.

FSU QB Jameis Winston Still Aiming for Two Sport Career (PS; Stevens)

Defending Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston might have to choose between football and baseball one day.

As he edges ever closer to being eligible for the NFL Draft, it doesn't appear he's in a hurry to make a selection.

Winston, both a quarterback and a closer for the Seminoles' football and baseball teams, respectively, reaffirmed Sunday at the ACC's annual football kickoff event he remains intrigued at the possibility of pursuing a two-sport career.

"I really do," Winston said. "That's something I've put my mind to. If one day comes where I have to make a decision, I know it'll be the right decision.

BC RB Myles Willis Will See an Expanded Role for the Eagles This Season

ACC 2014 Season Preview: BC Replacing Plenty on Offense (PS; Stevens)

2013 record: 7-6 (4-4 ACC)

2013 postseason: Lost to Arizona in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl

Last season without a bowl appearance:2012

Coach: Steve Addazio (7-6 in one season a Boston College, 20-17 in three seasons overall)

Coordinators: Ryan Day (offense, 2nd season), Don Brown (defense, 2nd season)

All-conference returnees: C Andy Gallik (third team)

Notable losses: WR Alex Amidon, LB Steele Divitto, DE Kasim Edebali, K Nate Freese, T Matt Patchan, LB Kevin Pierre-Louis, QB Chase Rettig, T Ian White, TB Andre Williams

Rising name to know: TB Myles Willis. Andre Williams was exceptional last season, rushing for 2,177 yards as Boston College opted for a workhorse back. Willis might not get quite that much work, but there's no doubt Addazio is willing to invest heavily in the running game. If the Eagles can capably replace Patchan and White at tackle, and if Willis can stay healthy, he has a good chance to emerge as one of the ACC's top rushers.

Three preseason questions

1. Who replaces Rettig? That would almost certainly be Florida transfer Tyler Murphy, who is immediately eligible after making six starts last season for the Gators. He had a decent completion percentage but few huge plays, but it was (no pun intended, honest) a Murphy's Law sort of year for Florida's offense. His success will hinge largely on whether Boston College can establish a running game and allow him to manage the game.

2. Can Boston College continue to minimize mistakes? Addazio said on several occasions last year that Boston College needed to do well at all of the things that didn't require talent. Some of that is off-field stuff, but it manifested itself on the field with minimal penalties and a positive turnover margin. It'll be a few years (and maybe longer) before the Eagles have the talent to overcome those sorts of miscues, so limiting them again is crucial if BC wants a second consecutive bowl invitation.

PS College Football Preview/Haiku Fest: Nos. 56-60 (Syracuse Checks in at #59; PS; Stevens)

...
59. SYRACUSE

There's no reason to go out on a limb with Syracuse, none whatsoever. In its last four regular seasons, the Orange went 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 and 6-6. In the two years before the Greg Robinson Error, Syracuse tossed up 6-6 and 6-5 regular seasons.

For purposes of offering an accurate reading on the Orange's arc as a program, it's best to ignore those four Robinson-led seasons. It's a blip, and it would have taken anyone some time to climb out of that mess, so toss out Doug Marrone's first season, too.

Nonetheless, there's six seasons in the last 11 years either completely unconnected to the Robinson sinkhole or only modestly so. Each of those regular seasons ended pretty close to break even. And that's about what should happen this season, too.

Can the Terrel Hunt-led passing game emerge as a more explosive element? Possibly, but it warrants a wait-and-see approach. Can the defense disrupt everyone it encounters? Probably not opponents with elite speed and offensive lines, but it will do well against most of its foes.

Maybe it will beat someone it probably shouldn't along the way (Louisville?) and perhaps it stumbles against someone it shouldn't (there's a case to be made here for Maryland). In the end, though, the Orange will probably find itself in six- or seven-win territory, a trip to Yankee Stadium and the Pinstripe Bowl its reward for a typical 21st century Syracuse season.

Preview of Stony Brook Football: Key Player is SU Transfer John Kinder, Who Might Start at QB (courant.com)

What players are new to the team and expected to make an immediate impact?

As mentioned above, Bedell is a breakaway threat at RB, and the secondary adds Virginia sophomore transfer Kye Morgan at CB. But the most important addition is QB John Kinder, who transferred from Syracuse and has one season of eligibility remaining as a grad student. His play was very limited at Syracuse, but if he can learn the system and rid himself of the rust, he could make a valuable contribution should he beat out redshirt junior Conor Bednarski and sophomore Carlos Hernandez.

What are the team's strengths on offense?

Stony Brook long has been known for its powerful running game during the tenure of head coach Chuck Priore. With three top RBs (Coker, Bedell and Kenner) and a veteran OL that adds 340-pound Pittsburgh transfer Shane Johnson, the Seawolves once again should control the ball with their running game, and TE Tye is a playmaker in the passing game.
