At this point SU should be the ones cutting ties to him, not the other way around.

You gotta remember Bernie hasn't been brought up on any charges and firing him would admit that the university thinks he is guilty without a chance to defend himself. I see a well timed "I don't want to be a further distraction" type statement from Bernie along with a resignation.
