Jim Boeheim’s radio show is on Thursdays from 7-9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show originates from Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse on Erie Boulevard in Syracuse. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which begins with the conference season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality.

You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:

Or on Twitter at mattpark1 or “askBoeheim”.

The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometime simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: http://tunein.com/radio/WGVA-1240-s29191/

I will be posting my rough transcript the night of the broadcast focusing on my questions, the team and their last and next games and then a second post the next day on other things that were discussed.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

(Some years they have started out just with an hour show and later shifted to a two hour show. I came up with two questions and sent in the first, which is the question I always like to begin the year with. If it’s a two hour show, I’ll ask the second in the second hour.)

Apparently they are going to have a Jim Boeheim Show during his suspension. I avoided any questions about the games being played during the suspension.

First hour:

"Coach, DaJuan Coleman used to shoot fouls like Arinze Onuaku. Now he’s shooting them like Gerry McNamara. Is this an early-season fluke or is really a good free throw shooter now? And how much did GMAC have to do with that?"

Second hour: (if they have one):

“Coach, I was looking at a list of Syracuse football players who have played in the Super Bowl. There have been 28 of them. I decided to see how many Syracuse basketball players have played in the NBA Finals. There have been three: Billy Gabor played in the 1950 and 1954 finals against the Lakers and scored 52 points in 9 games. Our former police chief, Dennis DuVal, who played 1 game in the 1975 finals as his Bullets were swept by the Warriors and scored 2 points and Marty Byrnes, who played 1 games for the Lakers against the Sixers in 1980, and didn't score.

With all the success we’ve had in basketball over the years, this is surprising. Is there some reason that our former players don’t wind up playing on teams good enough to play for the NBA title?”

I love the 2nd question. Id love an answer to that one from JB

If id have to hazard a guess, do say basketball is a sport dominated by the best player. We have never put the best player in the league, into the league, as such he hasn't carried a team to a finals appearance. Meanwhile in football, with so many additional roster spots, and in a sport not dominated by the very best players (to the extent basketball is) more opportunities = more chance for success.

Also the NBA goes through runs with the same champion year after year, meanwhile in the NFL it's been a decade since a repeat champion, and so very few make serious runs at it the next season anyways. In essence greater league wide parity (with large turnover every offseason) leads to better chances than in the NBA where rosters largely stay the same year to year.

I'm kind of saving that question for when we are closer to the Super Bowl. It's my emergency question if and when they suddenly go to a second hour, as they have the last few years, (I ask a question an hour).

As to the likely reason I think the more limited number of players the basketball program produces and the limited number of spots on the bets team are a partial reason. I think the fact that we play zone and the NBA doesn't has a lot to do with it. Beyond that, despite having the biggest arena, a Hall of Fame coach, a record streak of winning seasons, no competition from the pros, 5 final fours and 5 teams that reached a #1 ranking, (and those are ten different teams), we rarely seem to get the premiere recruits. Most of our heroes are good college players but borderline pro prospects. Why that is I'm not sure, but the two probations might have something to do with it.We haven't been able to afford to take chances getting into the sweepstakes for the #1 type recruit because we don't want to get in trouble again.

It's interesting to speculate what the reason is. But I'm more interested in what JB would say the reason is.

Bill Gabor

You are right and I'm wrong. I had thought about Billy but knew he retired due to injury before the 1955 playoffs when the Nationals won the title. What I'd forgotten was that the Nationals made the finals in 1950 and 1954, but lost to George Mikan's Lakers. Still that counts. Bill played in 5 games in 1950 and scored 39 points and 4 games in 1954 and scored 13 points. I'll amend the text of my question to include Billy. Thanks.
