When the NCAA reduced the number of allowable scholarships for men's basketball from 15 to 13, most players stayed at one school for four years (some five with a redshirt), players only left early if they were a sure fire lottery pick and roster continuity and development was the norm in college basketball. Today, with the growth of the G League, dramatic increase in the number and lucrative nature of overseas options and a free agent transfer portal it is difficult to impossible to build a program foundation and develop players. When you can lose a key piece of your roster in late spring and almost all of the high school recruits for the next TWO incoming classes are committed (and even younger kids have already whittled down their candidate schools based on existing relationships), when your best players are being evaluated for the NBA and make a decision to ultimately leave or return in the same time frame, roster management is virtually impossible year after year.

Women's basketball allows 15 scholarships, in part because I believe there was never a year in residence rule for transfers. Is it time for men's basketball to restore the additional two and go back to 15?

Interesting question. High school recruiting is falling off because HMs want to keep scholarships for the portal. I wonder if that will contribute to the NCAA increasing roster size.

Part of that too has been the extra covid year granted to every player without the roster limit changing. With that expiring it should help high school players a bit.

They may have to start at a low or mid major level as the big boys will still actively mine the portal for those who develop, but at least there will be a scholarship for them.

In 3-5 yrs every team will have a budget to pay players, it will be the same across the board, make it 1 million, thats it. you do what you want and you can get as many as you want for that 1 million.

Done.

everything else is NIL money.

schools dont have scholies to deal with its now real money and every school charges 50K to go to school no matter where you go..

Then they cap NIL money as part of the deal and everything in excess of some number goes into a pot to spread out amongst all the kids in that sport.. The Kentucky kid gets 2 million NIL fine, 1.8 million goes into the pot.

it will all be union and negotiated to make the playing field level. right.

Never thought the good old days were ever going to be the good old days. This sport is cooked.

If the kids at the end of a 13 player bench aren’t happy with their playing time and enter the portal, what do you think kids #14 and #15 will do?

Kids are gonna leave early for the NBA/G-League. Kids are gonna portal.

Hopefully we can use the portal to replace our losses.

With NIL, are scholarship limits a worry? For instance, for the great players, be sure they get their NIL deals, then add a sweetener, enough NIL that covers the cost of the school. Call it “Super NIL”. Save the scholarships for the 4-year “program” players who receive “basic NIL”.
The top players become “walk-ons.”

Absolutely true unless kid 14 and 15 are developmental projects. There will be a lot of movement regardless of how many players are on a roster. Two extra spots not only gives the staff more options, including in house options that they have worked with, it also gives the players more redshirt opportunities to develop athletically and educationally.

hey these kids aren't "amateur " college athletes anymore. stop restricting them. schools should be able to hire as many kids as they can afford and keep them as long as they want. no more roster limits. no more X number of years of eligibility. hell get rid of the GPA requirements too. stop playing pretend.
