New Volunteer Assistant Coach: Nick Acquaviva

Returning to Central New York, Nick Acquaviva has been announced as a volunteer assistant coach for the Syracuse University men's lacrosse team for the 2022-23 academic year.

Acquaviva, a Cicero North Syracuse High School product, joins the Orange after spending two seasons at Cleveland State. Duties at Syracuse will include working with the goalkeeping corps and the faceoff units.

So TD is helping bring in face off recruits/transfers and then bails? Feels like Dordevic all over again. What is it with people acting like they are going to stay and then leaving? This is BS

It’s a volunteer position. Still has bills to pay like all the rest. I wish Nick nothing but success.

If he got a paying gig, I'd have a hard time being angry at him.

Disappointing that Ierlan is gone, I thought he made a big impact with Phaup last year. That said, it will be nice to have a coach on staff that can make all the games (TD was missing a big % with NLL duties). He seemed to be instrumental in luring two FOGOs to Cuse with Richiusa and Angelo, so hopefully that connection continues. Wonder if this move was decided before he recruited them to Syracuse?

Don't know much about Acquaviva but seems to have a strong resume. Hopefully he can focus on the box/sub game because that was a serious issue last year. A lot of Volunteer Assistants have recruiting connections and I'm not sure he has that which is something to monitor. Still waiting to hear who the new DOLO is as well.

Just sucks that he is already saying "lets go to work" and what not to the new fogo additions just a month ago. Maybe dont commit in the first place if you are looking for jobs?

Weren't people mad at TD because he was tied up every weekend in the NLL and PLL and couldn't make SU gamedays?

Now we have a volunteer coach who can actually coach during games.

Given the fogo situation this year I thought the trade off was more than worth it

1-2 years for volunteer assistants is standard. if TD was struggling even to attend games then he shouldn't have been hired to begin with and it's better they replace him sooner rather than later. You need all hands on deck for gamedays

Season ends in may, he helps bring in recruits who acknowledge him in their commitment posts, they come in expecting to work with him, and now he leaves at a time that probably put us in a rushed spot to find a new hire. Am I really crazy for being a little pissed? How does Richiusa feel?

No no no no no. He’s not getting away that easy. Let’s go get him and lock him in the dome!!!!!
No mercyyy!!!!!

HHH.

I kid I kid.

Just a little.

Who knows maybe this guy was available and they felt being he can be fully committed they wanted to go with him instead of TD. I'm sure TD would understand to or TD got offered a paying job. Who knows what happened I wouldn't be surprised by either. As good as TD is tho having this guy 100% committed is better especially with all the FOGO's being young. They need someone by there side to lean on all the time not once in a while. That's also why I can see the coaches deciding to go with this guy over TD. Who knows

TD works with faceoff men from other schools outside of SU as well. Typically players from Victor and Rochester area. I am sure he will continue to work with them during school breaks-- as before. I don't know how this went down, whether TD or coaching staff initiated the change. Personally, I think having someone there 100% of the time is extremely important and if it can't be TD then so be it.

Everyone wake up on the wrong side of the bed today or what?

We don't know what went on behind closed doors. For all we know Ierlan could have been up front with the recruits/transfers saying he wasn't going to be an assistant this year. And we know how well SU is at getting these press releases out. I'm sure this was all done over the summer and not just this past week, unless one of you guys that's a bit closer can say otherwise.

Most complained that Ierlan wasn't there during games to help make adjustments or to help with other coaching duties. According to the bio, Coach Acquaviva seems to do a little of everything which might prove to be a little more beneficial than someone just specialized in one area. He worked with the goalies, implemented the ride/clearing packages, ran the sub box, helped the offense practice, and helped break down film at Cleveland State. Seems like he's going to be involved and around 100%.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Not sure how it works with if you are allowed to advise fogos on D1 teams while not being officially on staff. I assume when the season actually starts it is somewhat limited, and he definitely can't show up at an actual practice. Silver lining is that there were reasonable concerns about him not being present at every game. But man, fogo was in a bad place already and hard to argue that this doesn't make it a good deal worse. If there was one year to have a guy who could help with face offs it was this one. Mistakes in a substitution box might cost you 1-3 lost possessions a game. A bad fogo situation could be a heck of a lot more.

It’s no different than paying for professional lessons. Want to learn how to play a piano? Find a master pianist and pay to learn from them. Want to get better at face offs? Pay for lessons from the best of all time.

Learning is fungible. Were I Gait or Petro, I would have watched, listened and learned from Ierlan, analyzed video of his coaching and absorbed as much as I could from him knowing that he was going to leave. It appeared that he helped Phaup improve significantly last year. Players absorb from good coaches. Knowledge has no boundaries. Of how much value is an assistant coach who cannot teach FOGOs? Why is teaching facing off left to specialists? It's as important as any other lacrosse skill. SU has no goalie coach, as a consequence one of the three must work with the goalies. I guess I would add the caliber of a team's FOGO to all the other variables used to measure coach's quality.
