Here are the names that I have as possibilities for OL coach:

A.J. Ricker - Western Michigan http://www.wmubroncos.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=924509

Mike Bloomgren - Stanford http://www.gostanford.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/mike_bloomgren_748662.html

Ron Crook - Stanford http://www.gostanford.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/ron_crook_751277.html

Darrell Funk - Michigan (long shot I know) http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/funk_darrell00.html

Bob Stanley - New Mexico formerly from Western Michigan http://www.golobos.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/stanley_bob00.html

Bill Bleil - http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&ATCLID=3708819

Sam Pittman - http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/pittman_sam00.html
Hired at Arkansas but who knows with McDonald leaving

Harold Etheridge - http://www.gosycamores.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=15200&ATCLID=204968591

Shafer could go way off the board but this is my shot at it. :)

Anyone that coached the OL at Stanford would be the top of the list for me.

whoever it is it will be a downgrade when it comes to evaluating OL talent. Not sure about anyone else, but I had all the confidence in the world when DM/DA brought in under the radar OL prospects. I really hope it's someone with mid-atlantic ties, we are far too thin.

Damn good work, Spaz. If I could choose from this group, I'd probably go with Crook. He has more east coast ties than the other candidates, from what I can tell.

That's quite a list, Spaz. Call me negative, but I don't think anyone on that list is going to make a lateral move to coach at Syracuse, which would eliminate Crook, Funk, Bloomgren & Pittman I would think. The others are more viable.

Here's another name to throw against the wall:

Phil Meyer (worked with McDonald at Minnesota in 2007-2008, currently with Southern Illinois)

http://www.siusalukis.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/meyer_phil00.html

Another Midwest guy, I know. It's a theme.

I still like Mike Foley, who I think sutomcat first suggested.

http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/foley_mike00.html

He doesn't have a dynamite recruiting resume, but he's a good coach/teacher and has northeast ties.

And, not to be THAT guy, and I really don't think this is a possibility, but how about Andrew Dees?

He doesn't have a knock-out resume like Reagan, but he has coached in the Northeast, been an OL coach and a Recruiting Coordinator during his stops at Stonybrook, Buffalo, Temple & UMass. Worked with the Bills last year as an assistant OL coach.

As for the likely open DB position, I've thrown out a couple of quality names with connections in another post, but how about a guy like Rocco Casullo?

How about the Bills OL coach under Gailey, Joe D'Allesandris. He appears to have done a great job and I believe is currently unemployed.

Most of the coaches I listed fall under the Joe Novak Coaching tree Northern Illinois Head Coach from 1996-2007. With Shafer, McDonald, DeAndre Smith together I figured I would stay within that tree as a educated guess.

I've gone and back on this subject in my brain for awhile. I think we've blindly given Marrone credit for evaluating OL and developing them. I do think he could identify good talent but there are lots of people out there with the same skill. But every year he was here, except the 2nd half of this year, I was always expecting that position to be at least better than average.

It seemed like over and over again there were issues with the OL. Not just 1 specific thing, that you could chalk up to lack of talent or whatever. But different things all the time; false starts/holding penalties, not picking up a blitz, unable to create holes for the RB's, and unable to give Nassib/Paulus time to throw the ball. If I think back to the entire body of work and not just recent success; I would say he didn't do a great job in this area where I was expecting it to be a solid foundation, game in and game out. Did he walk into a talent deficiency in that position when he started the job, absolutely. But many coaches have been more successful with a lack of talent. I can't remember who we had here the first year, Bees has mentioned in him in a coaching thread awhile ago. I thought overall with the "talent" he had, he did a phenomenal job with his game planning/game calling and the O-Line played really well for their talent level. He was then let go and until the 2nd half of this year the O-Line could be characterized as mostly inconsistent.

* And I'm not in the camp that's angry at Marrone for leaving, I'm in the complete opposite camp.

Aquinas coaching staff is better than half the D1 staffs

So, you've been thinking about it and you've decided Doug's OL track record is lacking? You think way too much.
Doug took this unit from the depths of mediocrity to a strength. They were absolutely outstanding this year. Nassib was never consistently pressured and we owned the line of scrimmage. That's Doug Marrone and Greg Atkins at work.
If only Doug really loved his alma mater...

This is a classic example of skimming a thread and then replying to it. Skimming 101 = pick out the parts of the thread that suit your reply and focus on those things.

After thoroughly re-reading your post, I still believe your purpose was to criticize Doug's development of the OL.
My response remains that you're wrong if you think he wasn't excellent at that aspect of coaching.

I'd be down with the combo of Dees and Casullo. I agree that Dees doesn't seem to have the connection to Shafer for it to happen but his resume looks very good and it appears he has lots of northeast experience recruiting (New England, Eastern Pa, Jersey) which is where the big hole currently is. Casullo might not have the college resume that others have but it would be huge from a recruiting standpoint in the state of Florida which is what we need out of a DB coach with lots of other experienced Defensive coaches on the roster. These guys combined with Moore, McDonald, and Lea would give us better eastern recruiting ties to help give us more geographical recruiting balance which most people are in agreement needs to be improved.

I also like Foley as you and Tomcat mentioned as I think he'd be a great teacher with the OL (which might be the most important position coach from a coaching standpoint) but seems to be more of an unknown to lesser recruiter. He does have a good track record though of developing some under recruited Uconn o-lineman to NFL players so that is impressive and noteworthy.

Who coached OL at BC under Zags? BC has done so well with OLmen over the years, for no real good reason other than tradition. I would love to see SU do the same. Makes such a huge difference, as we saw this year.

Whoever it is, he needs to be a great teacher first. Anything else is a distant second, IMO.

will it be announced at the press conf tomorrow? or do we have to wait on a couple more hires?

I missed the press conf announcement. Is it to announce the coaches?
