Penalties killed us yesterday. A pick, a TD, and their fumble in the backfield were all called back on SU penalties - easily could have been the different between a win and a loss. Seems like SU has killed inself with penalties for many years, and that turns out to be somewhat true:

College Football Stats - College FB Team Penalties per Game on TeamRankings.com

SU's NCAA ranking for fewest penalties (yr, pg, rank, coach):

2003 6.3 47 PP
2004 7.3 84 PP bowl
2005 6.1 38 GR
2006 5.9 64 GR
2007 7.1 90 GR
2008 4.4 11 GR yippee
2009 5.7 48 DM
2010 6.8 94 DM bowl
2011 6.6 88 DM
2012 7.8 116 DM bowl
2013 7.6 117 SS bowl
2014 7.2 107 SS
2015 5.5 40 SS
2016 8.2 124 DB
2017 8.0 111 DB

Yes - for the last 15 years we have had far more penalties than average - especially the last 8 years. There are ~125 D1 teams so we have often been in the bottom 25 percentile.

No - in our last 3 bowl years we also had far more. Being #40 in 2015 didn't help. We were average during the GR years and that didn't help.

One will note that we have more plays in the Dino era so more penalties are a result, but the last two yrs aren't worse than 2012 and 2013.

Of note, Navy is usually #1 in this ranking and the other service academies are usually in the top 10 - military discipline? Baylor is the one team I noticed that has been worse than us over the last ~6 years, ending up at the bottom of the list twice.
