we have discussed it to death. we threw too many bubbles. we didnt attack down field. we threw backwards too much . Vill pressed up so what really happened in the 2nd half after we drove down field the first time ?

1st drive
went down field for score. several nice throws

2nd drive
bad field position
backwards throw
3rd and long nice deep out (a this point wilson was 9-11)
short run
2nd and 6 , 3 olinemen blocked noone.. how does that happen?

now Vill starts to press up.
false start another 3rd and long, wilson panicked and made bad throw to TE.
punt return for TD

3rd drive
PI on long pass
first down mid field
huge hole, miller misses block
throw deep, both rcvrs open no safety help, way overthrown . if wilson throws to Cristie its and easy 6.
throw into coverage on 3rd and long

at this point Vill had 30 yds of offense in the half.

4th drive
toss sweep
rb screen , oline blocked no one.
bad throw

so thats it. no bubbles, 1 backward pass. we threw down field more than 5 yds all but 1 pass. we did attack deep, we only ran 2 handoffs from the shotgun set. Vill only pressed up 2-3 times. we ran sweeps, RB screens, outs, Te throws, Wilson had time, made some bad reads some bad throws, oline missed several blocks.

the reality of the play calling far different than what really happened.

reality is Vill made plays, caused missed tackles, made something out of nothing and SU didnt. SU got pressure on D and missed 2 dozen tackles, pressed covered and missed the throws.

Well this post will not be acceptable to a lot of people. Perception vs. reality is always interesting.

what was Hunts YPP? (not OPP ... that is totally different)

That might tell another story

Hunt's YPP was 5.5

Here is the rest of the top 25 YPP. We weren't the lowest (thanks to Wisconsin setting the position back a few decades), but there were only 3 other schools with a lower YPP in week 1. And 2 of them, Georgia, and Wisconsin, went up against Clemson and LSU respectively.

YPP

Syracuse 5.3

Ole Miss 10.8
Texas AM 8.5
So Carolina 9.2
Arizona St 7.8
Michigan St 14.8
FSU 9.3
Bama 7.6
WVU 8.1
Oregon 11.9
Oklahoma 7.4
Ohio St 15.1
Auburn 6.3
UCLA 7.1
Standford 10.4
Georgia 5.0
Clemson 5.9
Wisconsin 2.1
LSU 11.4
USC 10.3
Notre Dame 13.4
Kansas St 7.9
Nebraska 8.2
UNC 5.2
Missouri 8.5
Washington 6.2
Baylor 6.7

Interesting how big the spread is between some of the really good teams in CFB, although as I write that, opponent is a big factor in a lot of the low/high numbers.

the big thing is we got almost nothing after the catch. west made one nice run other than that it was catch and get tackled.. its been like the for years. if you cant complete long passes you need the YAC. its not the length of our throws or the location we are throwing to. we need rcvrs to make plays

You're not going to get yac if you are no threat to complete long passes

That's my whole point though. What we are trying to do seemingly would require a high caliber play maker in order to get those YAC. Our 2012 offense was built to fit our personnel, and arguably could be much more suited towards this roster as well. We didn't use all these funky formations. We basically ran reads off of a couple handful of plays. We had 1 running play we ran 75% of the time, off of the zone read. Lemon and Sales were good, but neither caught on in the NFL so it's not like they were out talenting people. Marrone/Hackett schemed guys open.

Winning games is just as much coaching/game plan as it is players.

The great teams have great players but also have coaches that out game plan opponents. Our players are good enough to win games (not all), I truly believe our success this year will be defined by our coordinators ability to beat opponents with their game plan. I am itching to see what we look like against CMU.

my point was from the score in the 3rd to the end of the game, we did not run the zone read, we did not run bubble screens, we attacked down field, Vill did not press cover only one series. we just really failed to execute, almost every run 1 guard or the center missed a block on a running play. we had plenty of time to pass but the rookie QB made bad throws or bad reads. this was not a play calling issue as so many have said.

Are we going to miss tackles every game like that? if so we are in for a world of hurt, if not then Vill scores 10 pts or less and has way under 300 yards prob closer to 200. The offense needs to make changes but mostly the oline needs to function.. I think watching the replay they really struggled on power run near the goal line and figuring out who to block. play after play they blocked noone just went searching for the 2nd level.

After only one game, the numbers could be skewed by a big play or two (or lack of) along with a high/low number of attempts and/or completions.

true, because both hunt and Wilson had a 60-70 yd pass play for the taking and threw to the covered guy not the one actually open by 5 yds. one completion jumps our avg by almost 50%.. one pass of 20 yds came early and thats it
