Two time defending champion and #1 ranked North Dakota State didn’t look much like it in the first half against Furman. A field goal on the final play of the first half gave the Bison the lead at 10-7. They then blew it open with three third quarter TDs, including a 61 yard interception return by Reese Hannon. Quarterback Brock Jensen finished off the scoring with a 53 yard fourth quarter run to make it 38-7. State had a big edge in total offense at 516-327. Jensen had two TD passes, including a 52 yarder to open the scoring.

Once upon a time Tennessee State was a powerhouse. The top southern schools didn’t take black players and the Tigers, like Grambling, Florida A&M and Morgan State, among others had line-ups full of future NFL players. That was a long time ago and those players are playing for Alabama, LSU and Florida State now. This year’s squad was no match for Eastern Illinois, who had already beaten the Tigers 34-16 on 10/26. This time it was 37-0 at halftime and 44-0 before Tennessee State could score. The Panthers had a huge total yardage edge, 553-287. Shepard Little rushed for 184 yards and 2TDs. Jimmy Garoppalo passed for 240 yards and 3 scores, giving him and incredible 4,729 yards passing for the season with 51 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions. The final score was 51-10, giving the Panthers 636 points in 13 games, an average of 49 points per game.

Eastern Washington and South Dakota State, playing on the Eagle’s bright red field, matched each other with one touchdown each in the first two periods. Then EW dominated the second half, pulling away to a 41-17 win. The Jackrabbits had the nation’s leading rusher, Zach Zenner but he was held to 71 yards and one touchdown. The Eagle’s Quincy Forte had the same number of carries, (21) but 203 yards and a touchdown while Vernon Adams threw for 217 yards and 5 scores. Two of those TD passes went to freshman Cooper Kupp, who set an FCS record for freshman with 81 catches for 1468 yards and 20TDs, the alter tying a record that had been set by Randy Moss. EW outgained SDS 503-404.

Sam Houston State made it to the finals the last two seasons but won’t this year and Southeastern Louisiana knocked them off, 30-29, after falling behind 7-21 in the first period. A 17-0 second quarter erased that lead. A third quarter safety closed it to 24-23. Brian Bell gave the Bearcats the lead with 10:58 left. They tried for two to give them a 7 point lead but came up short. The Lions responded as Bryan Bennett capped off an 85 yard drive with a one yard toss to Jeff Smiley with 36 seconds left. They also came up short on a two point try but the Bearcats couldn’t respond with so little time left. It was te4am ball as the eight touchdowns in the game were scored by 8 different players. Bennett passed for 369 yards and 3 TDs in the game. Southeastern outgained Sam Houston 495-302. Now tell me why Southwestern Louisiana became Louisiana-Lafayette and Northeastern Louisiana became Louisiana-Monroe but Northwestern Louisiana and Southeastern Louisiana stayed that way?

New Hampshire was 6-4 and Maine 10-1 when they played on 11/23. But the Wildcats whipped the Black Bears 24-3 that day and did it again in the playoffs, 41-27. Sean Goldrich threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns and Chris Setain salted the game away with two fourth quarter scoring runs. New Hampshire out-gained Maine 495-384.

Jacksonville (Alabama) State easily beat McNeese State of Louisiana 31-10, building up a 21-0 halftime lead. The yardage difference was only 383-301. DeMarcus James ran for 127 yards and three short touchdowns.

Towson ended Fordham’s dreams of recovering (distant) past glory, breaking a 21-21 halftime tie with a 27-7 second half to win 48-28. Terrence West ran for 3 touchdowns and gained 76 yards to finish second to Zach Zenner in rushing yards, 1951-2015, (but he’s the happier guy because his team won). Michael Nebrich threw for 394 yards and 4TDs for Fordham but Towson’s quarterback, Peter Athens threw for 301 yards and 3TDs of his own. The Tigers outgained the Rams, 459-395.

For some reason, Costal Carolina was sent out west to play Montana. They somehow survived the cold to win 42-35. A 21-0 second quarter gave the Chanticleers, (yes, the Chanticleers) the lead, 35-15 at the half. They survived two fourth quarter scores by the Grizzlies to win. The last of those was a 72 yard bomb from Jordan Johnson to Jamaal Jones, (JJ to JJ). But Coastal ran out the last 5:01 of the clock with 8 running plays. The losers out-gained the winner 557-476. Johnson passed for 388 yards and 4TDs but it wasn’t enough. Alex Ross passed for 202 yards and 3 scores and ran for another 123 yards for the winners. Now the Chanticleers say in the north country to take on the Bison of North Dakota State.

The match-ups for the quarterfinals:

COASTAL CAROLINA 11-2 (601-409) #11, 1-3 (0)

At

NORTH DAKOTA STATE 12-0 (446-134) #1, 42-13 (10)

TOWSON 11-2 (494-278) #4, 4-5 (0)

At

EASTERN ILLINOIS 12-1 (636-270) #2, 9-16 (1)

JACKSONVILLE STATE 10-3 (504-319), #20, 19-12 (1)

At

EASTERN WASHINGTON 11-2 (526-355) #3, 13-9 (1)

NEW HAMPSHIRE 8-4 (428-258), #15, 8-14 (0)

At

SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA 11-2 (521-298) #6, 1-0 (0)

Comments: The Chanticleers will now play a team that plays defense. Eastern Illinois looks like a major powerhouse and a treat to the Bison. Nobody beats Eastern Washington on that red turf. New Hampshire won’t be playing Maine. I see a Bison vs. Panthers final and it could be a heck of a game.
