Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

Two-pointers
Eastern Washington 21/45 (46.7%) vs. 7/24 (29.2%)
Morehead State 25/53 (47.2%) vs. 21/46 (45.6%)
Connecticut 20/44 (45.5%) vs. 16/36 (44.4%)
Oregon 13/23 (56.5%) vs. 18/30 (60.0%)
Colgate 19/40 (47.5%) vs. 6/11 (54.5%)
Ohio State 11/21 (52.4%) vs. 9/24 (37.5%)
Cornell 13/21 (61.9%) vs. 11/19 (57.9%)
Northeastern 17/29 (58.6%) vs. 11/22 (50.0%)
Georgetown 17/30 (56.7%) vs. 15/32 (46.9%)
Old Dominion 8/26 (30.3%) vs. 14/24 (58.3%)
Buffalo 18/35 (51.9%) vs. 13/29 (44.8%)
Arkansas State 17/28 (60.7%) vs. 10/28 (35.7%)
St. Bonaventure 23/33 (70.0%) vs. 13/26 (50.0%)
Comment: We are 222/428 (51.9%) vs. 164/351 (46.7%). Those are good numbers for us, evne though we have no post-up scorer. We are 10-3 in this stat, 9-0 in wins and 1-3 in losses so it’s a big stat. Our numbers against ODU are embarrassing.

Three-pointers
Eastern Washington 3/17 (17.6%) vs. 6/35 (17.1%)
Morehead State 3/16 (18.8%) vs. 7/24 (29.7%)
Connecticut 6/22 (27.3%) vs. 12/21 (57.1%)
Oregon 5/28 (17.9%) vs. 7/20 (35.0%)
Colgate 7/20 (35.0%) vs. 12/40 (30.0%)
Ohio State 11/24 (45.8%) vs. 6/22 (27.3%)
Cornell 8/21 (38.1%) vs. 9/24 (37.5%)
Northeastern 9/31 (29.0%) vs. 6/28 (21.4%)
Georgetown 8/28 (28.6%) vs. 10/31 (32.3%)
Old Dominion 8/22 (36.4%) vs. 9/26 (34.6%)
Buffalo 6/22 (27.3%) vs. 10/33 (30.3%)
Arkansas State 7/23 (30.4%) vs. 8/24 (33.3%)
St. Bonaventure 6/17 (35.3%) vs. 3/19 (15.8%)
Comment: We were 87/291 (29.9%) but 70/208 (33.7%) after the first four games so our perimeter game isn’t so bad but isn’t a big asset, either. Our opposition was 105/347 (30.3). They are more reliant on the three but no better at it. We’ve actually won this stat in more games, 7-6, 6-3 in wins and 1-3 in losses.

Free-Throws
Eastern Washington 15/28 (53.6%) vs. 2/8 (25.0%)
Morehead State 25/30 (83.3%) vs. 7/12 (58.3%)
Connecticut 18/25 (72.0%) vs. 15/23 (65.2%)
Oregon 24/31 (77.4%) vs. 23/25 (92.0%)
Colgate 18/30 (60.0%) vs. 8/10 (80.0%)
Ohio State 17/19 (89.5%) vs. 26/35 (74.3%)
Cornell 13/21 (61.9%) vs. 6/9 (66.7%)
Northeastern 11/17 (64.7%) vs. 9/12 (75.0%)
Georgetown 14/22 (63.6%) vs. 11/17 (64.7%)
Old Dominion 22/34 (64.7%) vs. 13/20 (65.0%)
Buffalo 5/13 (38.5%) vs. 15/20 (75.0%)
Arkansas State 27/33 (81.8%) vs. 8/15 (53.3%)
St. Bonaventure 17/22 (77.3%) vs. 12/22 (54.5%)
Comment: We were 226/325 (69.5%). The NCAA average is 69.7%, so we weren’t bad but we had a bad stretch from the Cornell to the Buffalo games, (65/107 = 60.7%). Our opposition is 155/228 (68.0%) – worse than we are. We’ve scored 71 more points from the line than the opposition in 97 more attempts. We’ve won this stat 6 of 13 times. We are 6-3 in wins and 0-4 in losses, although we’ve scored more from the line in three of those games, (69-66 totally). Free throws matter!

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

PIP
Eastern Washington 38 vs. 12

Georgetown 26 vs. 24
Old Dominion 10 vs. 22
Buffalo 24 vs. 22
Arkansas State 26 vs. 18
St. Bonaventure 28 vs. 18
Comment: We had 354 points in the paint, (27.2 per game) to 270 (20.8), but they are almost all on long drives to the basket or fast breaks. We have no post-up scorer and don’t dish the ball much when we drive. We’ve won this stat 11 times in 13 games, the two losers being Oregon and Old Dominion.

POP
Eastern Washington 13 vs. 20
Morehead State 15 vs. 27
Connecticut 26 vs. 40
Oregon 21 vs. 23
Colgate 25 vs. 40

Georgetown 32 vs. 36
Old Dominion 30 vs. 33
Buffalo 30 vs. 34
Arkansas State 29 vs. 26
St. Bonaventure 36 vs. 17
Comment: We had 351 points on jump shots, (27.0 per game) to 371 for the opposition, (28.5). That’s closer than usual. Are we too similar to our opposition? We won the stat only 4 times and not in any of the losses but were 280-261 after the first four games.

Trey
Eastern Washington 9 vs. 18
Morehead State 9 vs. 21

Arkansas State 21 vs. 24
St. Bonaventure 18 vs. 9
Comment: We scored 261 points on 87 treys. The opposition scored 315 on 105 treys. We’ve out-scored them only 3 times and not in any of the losses.

Twilight Zone

Northeastern 2 vs. 0
Georgetown 8 vs. 6
Old Dominion 6 vs. 6
Buffalo 12 vs. 4
Arkansas State 8 vs. 2
St. Bonaventure 18 vs. 8
Comments: We have 90 points on 45 jumpers from the area between the three point line and the paint. That’s 6.9 points per game. The opposition has 56 TZ points on 28 jumpers. A lot of this is Tyus Battle, who is better from 2 than from 3. We are 9-1-3 in this stat, 6-1-2 in the wins and 3-0-1 in the losses.

POTO
Eastern Washington 33 vs. 8
Morehead State 14 vs. 16
Connecticut 16 vs. 8

Georgetown 19 vs. 11
Old Dominion 22 vs. 15
Buffalo 14 vs. 15
Arkansas State 24 vs. 6
St. Bonaventure 32 vs. 12
Comment: We’ve got 265 points from turnovers, (20.4 per game) to 157 (12.1) for the opposition. We’ve won 10 of 13 games in this stat, including all four losses.

FBP
Eastern Washington 10 vs. 0
Morehead State 2 vs. 6
Connecticut 8 vs. 8
Oregon 6 vs. 4
Colgate 12 vs. 5
Ohio State 7 vs. 2

Northeastern 9 vs. 7
Georgetown 14 vs. 7
Old Dominion 4 vs. 6
Buffalo 5 vs. 16
Arkansas State 13 vs. 6
St. Bonaventure 17 vs. 4
Comment: We’ve scored 113 points off fast breaks, (8.7 per game) to 77 for our opposition, (5.9). We were 9-3-1, 8-1 win the wins and 1-2-1 in the losses. We need to continue and even expand this edge.

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
Eastern Washington 10/51 (19.6%) vs. 0/35 (0.0%)
Morehead State 2/48 (4.2%) vs. 6/35 (17.1%)
Connecticut 8/33 (24.2%) vs. 8/47 (17.0%)
Oregon 6/29 (20.7%) vs. 4/39 (10.2%)

Cornell 6/32 (18.8%) vs. 6/27 (22.2%)
Northeastern 9/41 (22.0%) vs. 7/33 (21.2%)
Georgetown 14/42 (33.3%) vs. 7/38 (18.4%)
Old Dominion 4/35 (11.4%) vs. 6/37 (16.2%)
Buffalo 5/40 (12.5%) vs. 16/36 (44.4%)
Arkansas State 13/42 (31.0%) vs. 6/22 (27.3%)
St. Bonaventure 17/44 (38.6%) vs. 4/28 (14.3%)
Comment: We have scored 113 points in 499 fast break opportunities, (which does not mean we ran every time) (22.6%) vs. 77 in 414 opportunities (18.6%). We need to run more often than that. We’ve won this stat 8 times in 13 games and are 6-3 in wins and 2-2 in losses.

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

FCP
Eastern Washington 27 vs. 27
Morehead State 42 vs. 47
Connecticut 43 vs. 56
Oregon 28 vs. 34
Colgate 32 vs. 39
Ohio State 40 vs. 31
Cornell 37 vs. 40
Northeastern 33 vs. 25
Georgetown 36 vs. 35
Old Dominion 36 vs. 38
Buffalo 44 vs. 28
Arkansas State 24 vs. 27
St. Bonaventure 38 vs. 14
Comment: We’ve scored 460 points in our initial sets, (35.4 per game), to 441 (33.9). That’s hardly dominant. We are 5-7-1 overall, 4-4-1 in wins and 1-3 in losses. Amazingly we were 44-28 against Buffalo and 24-27 vs. Arkansas State, so maybe initial sets are overrated.

SCP
Eastern Washington 27 vs. 5
Morehead State 15 vs. 10
Connecticut 7 vs. 4
Oregon 7 vs. 19
Colgate 15 vs. 4
Ohio State 8 vs. 3
Cornell 7 vs. 3
Northeastern 19 vs. 8
Georgetown 8 vs. 18
Old Dominion 0 vs. 11
Buffalo 5 vs. 12
Arkansas State 18 vs. 11
St. Bonaventure 9 vs. 17
Comment: We scored 145 second chance points (11.2 per game) to 125 (9.6), a small difference of 1.5 points per game. We are 8-5 in this stat but only 1-4 in the last 5 games, so it’s an advantage that has faded. We are 7-2 in wins and 1-3 in losses.

Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)
Eastern Washington 0 vs. 0
Morehead State 0 vs. 0
Connecticut 2 vs. 2
Oregon 0 vs. 4
Colgate 1 vs. 2
Ohio State 5 vs. 1
Cornell 0 vs. 0
Northeastern 2 vs. 0
Georgetown 2 vs. 0
Old Dominion 3 vs. 5
Buffalo 3 vs. 0
Arkansas State 3 vs. 0
St. Bonaventure 0 vs. 2
Comment: it’s often bene observed that we don’t do very well in the last possessions of halves and games but we’ve out-scored the opposition 21-16 in last possessions so far this year. Teams have scored only 37 points in 52 last possessions, (I keep track of each teams’ last possession), and have come up empty in both halves a dozen times so it’s not just us that struggles in that situation.

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Starter Scoring
Eastern Washington 44 vs. 22
Morehead State 78 vs. 60
Connecticut 70 vs. 53
Oregon 56 vs. 67
Colgate 61 vs. 16
Ohio State 60 vs. 53
Cornell 55 vs. 40
Northeastern 50 vs. 43
Georgetown 65 vs. 49
Old Dominion 56 vs. 53
Buffalo 52 vs. 58
Arkansas State 58 vs. 24
St. Bonaventure 56 vs. 31
Comment: We all know JB likes to stick with his starters so we should win this stat most of the time. Our starters have scored 761 points this year (58.5 per game), to 569, (43.8). That’s +192 for our starters. We’ve won the stat 11 times, 9-0 in wins, 2-2 in losses.

Bench Scoring
Eastern Washington 15 vs. 19
Morehead State 6 vs. 10
Connecticut 6 vs. 30
Oregon 9 vs. 13
Colgate 16 vs. 16
Ohio State 12 vs. 9
Cornell 8 vs. 15
Northeastern 22 vs. 6
Georgetown 7 vs. 22
Old Dominion 6 vs. 15
Buffalo 7 vs. 13
Arkansas State 24 vs. 25
St. Bonaventure 25 vs. 16
Comment: And, of course this is the mirror image of the starter’s stat. Our bench has scored 163 points, (12.5 per game) to 209 (16.1). Expect the gap to widen in ACC play. We are 3-9-1 in this stat, 3-5-1 in wins and 0-4 in losses. Will we ever win it again?

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
Eastern Washington 11/24 (45.8%) vs. 11/13 (84.6%)
Morehead State 11/28 (39.3%) vs. 14/28 (50.0%)
Connecticut 10/26 (38.5%) vs. 22/28 (78.6%)
Oregon 12/18 (66.7%) vs. 17/25 (68.0%)
Colgate 13/26 (50.0%) vs. 14/18 (77.8%)
Ohio State 13/22 (59.9%) vs. 12/15 (80.0%)
Cornell 9/21 (42.9%) vs. 17/20 (85.0%)
Northeastern 20/26 (76.9%) vs. 11/17 (64.7%)
Georgetown 13/25 (52.0%) vs. 17/25 (68.0%)
Old Dominion 13/16 (81.25%) vs. 14/23 (60.9%)
Buffalo 7/24 (29.2%) vs. 12/23 (52.2%)
Arkansas State 12/24 (50.0%) vs. 12/18 (66.7%)
St. Bonaventure 19/29 (65.5%) vs. 8/16 (50.0%)
Comment: We have 163 assists on 309 made baskets (52.8%). The other guys have 181/269 (67.3%). Normally, more assists are granted on jump shots than on lay-ups or dunks and the other team is usually more dependent on jump shots. Also, our drives from way outside to the basket don’t produce assists. We’ve won this stat only 3 times and are 2-7 in wins, 1-3 in losses.

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
Eastern Washington 66/68 = 0.971 vs. 34/68 = 0.500 136 possessions
Morehead State 84/78 = 1.077 vs. 70/77 = 0.909 155 possessions
Connecticut 76/77 = 0.987 vs. 83/76 = 1.092 153 possessions
Oregon 65/70 = 0.929 vs. 80/69 = 1.159 139 possessions
Colgate 77/65 = 1.185 vs. 56/66 = 0.848 131 possessions
Ohio State 72/62 =1.161 vs. 62/63= 0.984 125 possessions
Cornell 63/57 = 1.105 vs. 55/57 = 0.965 114 possessions
Northeastern 72/60 = 1.200 vs. 49/60 = 0.817 120 possessions
Georgetown 72/71 = 1.014 vs. 71/72 = 0.986 143 possessions
Old Dominion 62/67 = 0.925 vs. 68/67 = 1.015 134 possessions
Buffalo 59/69 = 0.855 vs. 71/69 = 1.069 138 possessions
Arkansas State 82/64 = 1.281 vs. 52/63 = 0.825 127 possessions
St. Bonaventure 81/68 = 1.191 vs. 47/67 = 0.701 135 possessions
Comments: We have scored 931 points in 876 possessions, (1.063). The opposition has scored 798 points in 874 possessions (0.913). I all my years of computing this there’s only bene one game when the losing team averaged more per possession, (due to rounding) and it hasn’t happened this year so we are 9-4, 9-0 in wins and 0-4 in losses. There have bene 1,750 possessions in 13 games, 134.6 possessions a game. Last year in the pre-conference season we averaged 134.4. The pace slackened to 124.5 in the conference season. We’ve averaged more possessions in our losses (564/4 = 141.0) than in our wins (1,186/9 =131.8). Maybe shouldn’t be pressing and running?

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
Eastern Washington 66 -38 -13 = 15 vs. 34 -46 -2 = -14
Morehead State 84 - 40 – 5 = 39 vs. 70 -42 – 5 = 23
Connecticut 76 – 40 – 7 = 29 vs. 83 – 29 – 8 = 46
Oregon 65 – 33 – 7 = 25 vs. 80 – 25- 2 = 53
Colgate 77- 34 – 12 = 31 vs. 56 – 33 – 2 = 21
Ohio State 72 – 23 – 2= 47 vs. 62 – 31 - 9 = 22
Cornell 63 – 21 – 8 = 34 vs. 55 – 23 – 3 = 29
Northeastern 72 – 34 – 6 = 32 vs. 49 – 33 – 3 =13
Georgetown 72 – 33 – 8 = 31 vs. 71 - 38 – 6 = 27
Old Dominion 62 – 32 - 12 = 18 vs. 68 – 27 – 7 = 34
Buffalo 59 – 33 – 8 = 18 vs. 71 – 39 – 5 = 27
Arkansas State 82 – 28 – 6 = 48 vs. 52 – 34 – 7 = 11
St. Bonaventure 81 – 21 – 5 = 55 vs. 47 – 29 – 10 = 8
Comment: We are +422 on the season compared to the opposition’s +327, +95 for us. But we’ve scored 133 more points, so we really haven’t been all that efficient. In the last two games we are 103-19, +84 so we were only +11 in the 11 games before that. This stat is important to winning: we’re 9-4, 9-0 in the wins and 0-4 in the losses.

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
Eastern Washington 66/169 (39.1%) vs. 34/161 (21.1%)
Morehead State 84/182 (46.2%) vs. 70/176 (39.8%)
Connecticut 76/179 (46.2%) vs. 83/158 (52.5%)
Oregon 65/161 (40.4%) vs. 80/147 (54.4%)
Colgate 77/170 (45.3%) vs. 56/152 (36.8%)
Ohio State 72/133 (54.1%) vs. 62/149 (41.6%)
Cornell 63/126 (50.0%) vs. 55/119 (46.2%)
Northeastern 72/178 (40.4%) vs. 49/140 (35.0%)
Georgetown 72/166 (43.4%) vs. 71/174 (40.8%)
Old Dominion 62/152 (40.8%) vs. 68/146 (46.6%)
Buffalo 59/149 (39.6%) vs. 71/177 (40.1%)
Arkansas State 82/158 (51.9%) vs. 52/143 (36.4%)
St. Bonaventure 81/139 (58.3%) vs. 47/131 (35.9%)
Comment: We have scored 931 of a possible 2062 points this season, 45.2%. Our foes have scored 798 of a possible 1,973 points (40.4%). Like JB says, it’s all about putting the ball in the basket. We are 9-4 in this stat, too 7-2 in the wins, 2-2 in the losses.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)
Eastern Washington 13-8, 15-2, 27-12, 11-12
Morehead State 25-11, 11-19, 25-16, 23-24
Connecticut 15-17, 17-21, 18-21, 26-24
Oregon 11-12, 11-23, 20-19, 23-26
Colgate 14-16, 21-16, 28-14, 14-10
Ohio State 12-16, 17-15, 23-19, 20-17
Cornell 13-14, 20-10, 14-17, 16-14
Northeastern 21-17, 14-6, 16-12, 21-14
Georgetown 8-13, 14-22, 30-13, 20-23
Old Dominion 13-13, 20-10, 8-18, 21-27
Buffalo 18-11, 18-21, 12-15, 11-24
Arkansas State 15-24, 23-12, 19-5, 25-11
St. Bonaventure 24-15, 22-10, 20-14, 15-8
Comment: We’ve won 29 quarters, tied 1 and lost 22, again not a dominant performance. We’ve won the first quarter 5 times, tied it once and lost it 8 times. We are 8-5 in the second quarter, 9-4 in the third and 6-7 in the fourth. It’s not an illusion that we seem always to be crawling out of a hole. The cumulative scores in each quarter: 202- 187 (16-14), 223-187 (17-14), 260-195 (20-15), 246-234 (19-18). Maybe JB should give his half-time speech before the game.
