Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said he supported maintaining the status quo for football scheduling during the ACC Fall meetings, which were held on Wednesday and Thursday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Wildhack's preference ultimately won out on Wednesday, despite the fact that speculation entering the meetings centered around a pair of possible changes.

The other options included a nine-game conference schedule and an eight-game conference schedule with two power-five games required. Those options would likely have increased the league's schedule strength and created more quality games for ESPN to broadcast.

Wildhack, though, said he believes retaining the scheduling structure benefits both the entire ACC and Syracuse. Teams are currently supposed to play eight conference games and at least one power-five opponent during non-conference play...

John Wildhack discusses his ACC football scheduling preference, Syracuse's future

What happens when he gets the third strike ?

Well he is wrong. That is two strikes against him.

Two?

What was the first?

Does that mean with three he's "lost you"? A favorite term around here, as if that declaration ever matters.

Or should he just be handed a box and have security escort him off campus if he gets a third strike?

I guess I'm in the minority, I agree with him.

It puts the conference at a competitive disadvantage compared to the P12 and B1G. If the B12 adds a CCG, then them as well. All three play 9+1. They have figured out how to make it work. Why can't the ACC? How is it not in the best interest of the conference to be at 9+1, when the competition is there already?

In addition the B1G is doing away with FCS games. So how is it that Ohio State can get 5 home 5 away P5 games and still get 7 home games every year? SU has had trouble getting 7 home games with 8+1 because of our administration issues, not the math. We have been awful at scheduling and are always well behind, which limits our options and puts us in a hole. You can either get a 2 for 1 (7 home games 2/3 years) or you can buy home games (7 yearly). The extra $500k per team plus game day revenue would cover the costs of buying a team to come to the Dome.

Speaking of which going to 9+1 would be in SU's best interests because it bails us out of our future scheduling problems. And going forward we only have to worry about filling 2 games vs 3.

In addition it puts SU at a disadvantage vs our peer ACC schools. We schedule harder OOC. Without requiring the other teams to do so as well, it make it more difficult for SU to have success. Meanwhile you have Duke and NC State with inflated records. We aren't on the same playing field compared to BC, NC State, Duke who go out and play the little non gender specific people of the poor. Having the same requirements makes sense. Hopefully SU will dummy down the schedule, but Wildhack's comments and Frazier's history worries me.

I don't get the flexibility angle he stated. With 9+1 you still have control over your P5 OOC and your G5 game. With 8+2 you have control over two P5 games and your G5 game. With 8+1 you have control over your P5 OOC and two G5 games. So he really wants the "flexibility" to chose a G5 game in lieu of playing one of Miami, VA Tech, UVA, UNC, Duke. That is still variety and it will put more people in the seats at home games.

The Atlantic and Coastal are more like conferences than divisions. How is it good for the conference to play teams once in a six year period? Or to play each team at home once every 12 years? That needs to be fixed and the easiest way is 9 games.

From SU's standpoint it has an impact on recruiting. Do you think it is easier to go into a Miami or Georgia HS and say we will play here during your time at SU, or to say we will play here on your 10 year anniversary of graduating from SU?

Having ACC schools play each other OOC makes the conference look silly. That should be a red flag that the conference scheduling isn't working.

I understand FSU, Clemson, and GA Tech voting no to 9+1. I also get other schools following FSU/Clemson's lead to keep them happy and keep the peace. But the best thing for the entire conference is 9+1. I also don't get any team voting no to 8+2. Unless you are Duke, BC, NC State who want to trick people into thinking they are better than they are.

Was this explanation necessary?

No one cares about the pac12 but realisticly this puts the acc and sec at an advantage when it comes to scheduling and the big 10 at a disadvantage. The acc can get more home games and schedule for success. The big ten can't.

I think a grand total of NO ONE looks at conferences as seriously as this.

Syracuse right now needs to get home games and cupcakes rotated into a schedule that is pretty much filled up for next few years.

AD is right that status quo is fine for SU if we can accomplish that. If we could get rid of Wisconsin I'd be psyched

Exactly. good lord, talk about getting lost in the weeds.

Wildhack basically said 8 games, move on, nothing to see here and he's right
Well, let's hope he's got the scheduling thing straightened out. Not a big fan of the 8 game vote unless he has a concrete plan. And I'm sure he does. He just hasn't shared it yet.

Maybe Wildhack isn't a POD guy.

The logic makes complete sense. Get as many home games as possible to get better recruits, give us another game we can control that we can schedule and win.

What a breath of fresh air we have now at Manley, a coach who wants to us the advantages we have and and AD with a long term vision.
