With one second there was no way that MSU could win. A second has to tick off on an onside kick if the kicking team recovers -- and its not possible to advance the ball if the kicking team recovers. The game was over.

Unless Michigan was dumb enough to pick up the onside kick and try running it, then there is a fumble and then Mich St picks up the fumble and runs it back.

Odds Michigan would pick up an onside kick and try to run with it are slim, yes. But still...why take that off the table.

Yes. You're right. Given how they lost to MSU last year I guess it wasn't inconceivable. And because of that, MSU should have kicked the extra point.

they could have kicked off just short of the end zone and hoped michigan fumbled it and it was recovered in the end zone too

or what if the kickoff and recover onside kick and mich got some kind of penalty that extended the game?
