ESPN Stats and Information utilized numerous resources to compile data for the modern NFL draft (since 1967). High school data is available from 1990-present and was compiled with the help of players' NFL and college teams. College coaches are those who were with the player for the majority of the player's final year in college.

- 112 Total draft picks (almost 2.5 players drafted/year)
- 14 1st rounders:
  1. Freeney #11 in '02
  2. Allen #22 in '01
  3. Bulluck #30 in '00
  4. McNabb #2 in '99
  5. Jones #22 in '98
  6. Darius #25 in '98
  7. Harrison #19 in '96
  8. Gregory #26 in '88
  9. Green #17 in '86
  10. Monk #18 in '80
  11. Ehrmann #10 in '73
  12. Thoms #22 in '69
  13. Csonka #8 in '68
  14. Little #6 in '67
- McNabb highest SU pick (#2 in '99)

- By decade:
1960's - 8 (only 3 drafts)
1970's - 18
1980's - 34
1990's - 26
2000's - 22
2010's - 4 (only 2 drafts)

Notables:
- Marrone drafted in 6th rd in '86
- Bob Brotzki drafted in 7th rd in '86

wow, nice. You didn't note that Floyd Little is in the Hall of Fame and was First Team AFL in 1969

'86, '88, '89 and '90 are the kinds of drafts I'm looking for. Coach Mac did a truly amazing job turning SU football around.

Completely agree. Those drafts are loaded with some of the best SU had to offer.

That's a lot of work. Eye opening that we haven't had a 1st round pick since Freeney in 2002. Means it's been about 15 years since we have recruited a 1st round draft pick. Not that we always had 1st rounders but from 1996 - 2002 we averaged one 1st rounder a year. Now nothing for a long stretch. Maybe Chandler has a sneaking chance.

His rise in draft stock has been a bit surprising, but I think his on field performance here is not a good indicator of his potential. I think it will be fitting to put a DE in the first round again after a decade.

Btw, thanks for putting this together.

Down time in the offseason. ;)

That's what I caught as well. With all of the greats we've had since '67, I was suprised to see McNabb was our highest pick. He was great in college, but there were others on that list that were even better.

Good point about the 15 years without a 1st round pick. I think Mike Williams was probably a 1st round pick without his off-the-field issues. This list shows me that we've dropped in quantity as well as 1st round quality. I love the drafts between '86 and '90 as much as anything because of the numbers. I'd love to see the program with that kind of depth again.

In hindsight, Harrison and Freeney should've been higher draft picks in their respective drafts. Both are sure-fire HOFers and are/have setting/set records.

Agree with you Fjoinkay about Mike Williams. He was the best rookie WR in 2010. Last year he struggled, but I think he will be fine with Freeman.

Oh yeah, McNabb should've gone over Tim Couch, too. :noidea: That would've given SU a #1 pick.

I keep going back to this list. I love it. If it can happen once, it can happen again! Gotta believe!

While creating this thread, there were so many players that I had completely forgotten about, let alone go drafted. It's insane.

Hopefully we can continue to see 2-3 players get drafted every year. Chan this year. Good shot for Phil and Provo too.

Next year, no clue if there is anyone. Maybe Nassib, Lemon, Pugh (leave before SR RS year, doubtful)...
