Bud Poliquin was lauding the 1987 Syracuse team, (whose 25th anniversary this is), on his radio show. He’s written both an arti8cle for the a paper about them and an 11 page spread in CNY Sports magazine. He marveled that that team had 31 players on it who were alter pro draftees or free agents, 31 guys who, for at least a time, played on the “next level”. I’d done a study a couple years ago about the talent level of the team. I’d listed all the draftees and free agents since freshmen became eligible in 1972. I had 32 future pros for 1987 team. But later teams had more, with a peak of 36 in 1998. As a matter of fact, we had 31 future pros as late as 2003. This suggested to me that the ‘87 team had more going for it than just the talent level, something that was missing from subsequent teams.

But what got me onto the present project was that Bud wanted to know who my 32 players were so it could be compared to his list. I hadn’t listed players: I just added up the draftees and free agents for every four year period in the SU Media Guide, (“SU Draft Selections and Free Agents”) and attributed that number to the SU team before each period. I wasn’t looking for precision- just some overall numbers that would serve as a sort of graft of the talent level over a period of years. Bud had looked at the 1987 roster and compared it to the same section. When I figured it out, I found that both had “errors”. I had Rob Carpenter, who transferred in from Notre Dame after 1987. Bud had Andrew Dees who was on the 1987 roster but red shirted that year and played the next four years. And he didn’t have Frank Conover who did the same thing.

The “dispute” didn’t amount to much but it left me with a desire to get a more meaningful accounting of the talent level for each team. High school ratings are meaningless here: that’s what they did in high school. The Media Guide lists players SU players who have made All-America, (unfortunately only the first-teamers), and All-Big East, (all teams), the all-time list of lettermen as well as the section on draftees and free agents. I compared the other lists to the list of letterman, (which gives the years they were letterman) and came up with what I have below.

The NFL draft was 12 rounds until 1993. Then it was 8 rounds, then 7 rounds from 1994 onward. So there are fewer draftees and more free agents, (many of whom would have been draftees), from that point on. That makes the distinction between draftees and free agents blurred at best. Thus, I’ve listed both. Some of the free agents signed with Canadian teams. SU lists them and so will I. While it’s regrettable they didn’t list everyone who was on every level of the All-American teams, I’d assume anyone who was would have been on the All Big East teams. There are some players who made some level of All-Big East who were never drafted by the pros and were not free agents. Since the conference didn’t begin until 1991, such players would not be on the lists for previous teams. I decided to list them separately so the count could be based on the player’s status as pro draftees and free agents. That’s a pretty good representation of the talent level of each team, even if there might have been some good college players the pros were not interested in.

I decided to cover the Carrier Dome Era, so I began with 1980. Using the lettermen list, (note: some players lettered then didn’t, then did for various reasons so their lettermen years might not be consecutive), meant the players contributed something to the team in that year: they were on the roster, did not red shirt and played enough to earn a letter. They may not yet have been playing at an All-Conference, All-American level or one that made them a retrospect yet but they had the talent to eventually do so and the talent level of the team is what we are trying to measure here. This is along one so I'lll break it up into the 1980's, 1990's and the 2000's.

(See my post later in this thread for an explanation of some adjustments I made)

2007 is the last year for which the record is complete at this time. For quick reference here is the number of future NFL draftees and free agents who lettered on each team from 1980-2007:
1980 11
1981 10
1982 14
1983 14
1984 13
1985 21
1986 18
1987 24
1988 27
1989 26
1990 25
1991 23
1992 31
1993 24
1994 23
1995 24
1996 29
1997 29
1998 36
1999 30
2000 30
2001 29
2002 24
2003 25
2004 21
2005 25
2006 19
2007 13

If you take the interest by the pros as at least symbolic of the number of good players on each team, (even if they were not the only good college players, we built up during the McPherson era to a peak. The biggest jumps was actually in 1985, when we went from 12 to 20. The 1987 had 24 future pros among it’s lettermen. Fully nine teams in the next 18 years had more than that and four more. The collapse in overall talent level didn’t really begin until after the 2005 season as we went from 25 in 2005 to 19 in 2006 and only 13 in 2007, the same as we had in 84. Our most talented team was 1998 with 36 future pros, half again as many as 1987. That team went 8-4.

Of course, the quality of a team is based on more than a head count. Our collapse began before 2006. The 1999-2000 teams were mediocre. The 2001 team was out-gained on the year but went 10-3 because we of a +15 turnover margin, courtesy of Dwight Freeney. We were 4-8 the next year and had to rally from a 1-6 start to achieve that. We returned to mediocrity the next two years and then the G-Rob era opened with a 1-10 disaster with a team that had the same number of future pros as the 11-0 team of 1987 did.

A big factor for a mid-level school like Syracuse is whether we have any truly “special” players that can elevate a team. Players like Tim Green, Don McPherson, Donovan McNabb, Marvin Harrison, Dwight Freeney, etc. The 2002-2005 teams just didn’t have anyone like and just having a lot of good players wasn’t enough. Other factors are the experience of the player, their health, the degree of difficulty of the schedule and things you can’t control like the officiating, the weather and the bounce of the ball.

Still, the reasons we were not able to duplicate the ’87 season in subsequent years don’t seem to have to do with the overall talent level of the roster. I do think the things Donnie McPherson was talking about in his reply to my question in CNY Sports Magazine have something to do with it. He called it “chemistry” and “communication“. I call it “confidence” and “focus“. Whatever you choose to call it, that 1987 had something extra that subsequent teams just haven’t had.

SWC ... Do we even have partial numbers for subsequent years? If so, I hope we hit the nadir and it shows what I want to believe - that there is true hope that we're getting better.

And as an aside, 25 years? I don't feel that old.

Joe Donnelly signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 03 as a free agent. I wanted to give you a heads up since I didn't see his name on the list. He either played from 99 to 03, or 00 to 03.

That was awesome. Thanks for putting all of that together.

2008: 9 future pros plus four more All Big East only
2009: 7 future pros plus four All Big East only
2010: 7 future pros plus threer All Big East only
2011: 5 future pros. No other All Big East players.

It's an incomplete record so it's pretty meaningless at this point.

Joe Donnelly signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 03 as a free agent. I wanted to give you a heads up since I didn't see his name on the list. He either played from 99 to 03, or 00 to 03.

He lettered in 2001-2003 but is not listed in the Media Guide as a draft selection or free agent.

But that's why I bothered to post the whole thing and not just the summary numbers- so things like this could be double checked.

Great work.

It just goes to show how sub par of a job Coach P did with that '98 team. That team was loaded with talent. I understand the schedule was daunting and they essentially got to their goal of a BCS bowl but man, you wouldn't think 8-4 with a team that talented.

They should've been 10-1 heading into that bowl game. Should've finished that year 10-2.

This suggested to me that the ‘87 team had more going for it than just the talent level
Yes. It's called a favorable schedule. If they played our 1998 schedule, they lose 1 or 2.

Great as always, SWC. Though Kevin Abrams was a second-round pick, not a free agent. Pretty sure both 1995 tight ends were also drafted (Williams by Philadelphia and Sinceno by the Bears?).

Interesting to see how many good-but-not-great talents were on that first McNabb team; in three more years, they upgraded across the board.

Unrelated, I can't for the life of me recall what happened to Shelby Hill. Did he leave with eligibility remaining? That 1994 team was a playmaker or two (or just an excessive celebration penalty) away from a bowl and a much better reputation than they currently enjoy.

Agree; it's hard to watch tape of that year and point out an instance of "this is a game we should have lost," at least during the regular season. Really frustrating defense late against Tennessee and West Virginia, and just a head-in-the-clouds Thursday night performance at Carolina State.

That group of players was better than each of its 11 opponents.

I have to give a shout out to my old friend Ron Hobby. Got in as a true freshman when Ike Bogosian blew out his knee early in the second game of the 1981 season against Temple. My memory has declined but I think that Ron started every game from there out. Was a NFL camp free agent after playing in the Hula Bowl but did not make it.

Ron has to be one of the very few guys who started almost every game of their college careers - if I am correct, Ron was the starter from game 3 of his true freshman year.

sorry, you lost me at Bud Poliquin

in all serious, great post. interesting to see the trends

You are right about Abrams and Williams- they were draftees, not free agents. However the Media Guide has Sinceno as a free agent. I will correct the listing. Hill was a letterman from 1990-1993. He was not on the 1994 team.

Amazing post. Noticed in 1987 Daryl Johnston is listed as FA -- you have him correctly tagged in the adjoining years.

I believe the top 4 or 5 guys in each unit (offense and defensive) usually have big impact. Wonder if someone could sort out the top guys for each year (by round taken in the draft) and correlate that to the season's record. So, Dwight Freeney or Marvin Harrison or Keith Bullock have a bigger impact (obviously) than a very low draft choice or a FA. But you need a small nucleus of impact leaders in each unit, rather than a singleton like Art Jones.

you may haev mentioned it, but i wonder how much the success of a team accounts for how many are drafted. many people will think this is common sense (i.e. the better the team because they have better players thus more will be drafted). although it is nearly impossible to prove, and who know's how big of an impact it has, the success of a team impacts the number drafted.

case in point, the stony brook baseball team had x amount of players drafted because, i believe, their success created a "halo" effect because the team was getting a lot of publicity. a good player from a crappy team probably will not get the same attention as an equally good player from a great team.

I'm going to update the lists with more information. It's been pointed out that there are players in the "Orange in Professional Football" section who are not listed in the "SU Draft Selections and Free Agents" section, which is what I used, assuming that the players would be the same in each section. There's also lists of former SU pro bowlers and other things I could add as well. I'll do so when I get to it. I corrected the Johnston mistake.

Chicken or egg. Team success creates individual recognition but team success is at least partially built on the talents of the individuals on it. The early 80's teams would have had more draft choices if they'd won more. And they would have won more if they'd had more draft choices.

I'm bumping this thread up because it was pointed out to me that there were SU players who played in the pros who were not listed as draftees or free agents on the above list, (the example given was Dwayne Joseph). I decided to look through the "Orange in Professional Footbal"l section of the Media Guide and compare it to "SU Draft Selections and Free Agents" section. to see what players are in the first but not in the second. Here is what I came up with:

Nick Bruckner played for the 1983-87 Jets. He was a letterman in 1982.
Ted Cirillo played in the USFL in 1983. He was a letterman in 1981-82.
Giovanni DeLoatch played in something called "AF2" which is the Arena Football Leagues developmental league, in 2005. I guess that's the lowest level of pro football you could find but, hey- it's "the next level". He was a letterman in 200o-2001, (but I'll never forget him rumbling 27 yards to score with a fumble in the epic rout of Miami in 1998).
Donald Dinkins played in the Arena League in 2002. He had lettered in 1997-99.
Jameel Dumas plyed in NFL Europe in 2006-07. He had lettered in 2000-2003.
Kevin J. Green, (the kicker: we had a runner in the same era named Kevin D. Green) played in the Arena league in 1992-93. He ahd lettered in 1988.
Marucs Hackett played in the USFLin 1984. He had lettered in 1980, (not 1981) and 1982-83.
Jose Harris played in "AFL2", which appears to be the same thying as "AF2") in 2009. He had lettered for SU way back in 2002.
Dwayne Joseph played for the 1994-1997 Chicago Bears after lettering in 1990-1993. I'm not sure what he wasn't in the "SU Draft Selections and Free Agents" section, since he must have been won or the other to nplay in the NFL a year after he left SU.
Eugene Newsome also played in AFL2 in 2009. he had lettered in 2006-07.
Alonzo Jamel Riddle played in the CFL in 2006-07 after lettering in 2001-02.
Guy Ruff played for the 1982 Pittsburgh Steelers after having letterred at SU in 1981. He's another one that probably should have been listed in both sections.
Mike Siano, who made the big catch in the Nebraska game played for the Eagles in 1987. He had lettered in 1982-85.
Richie Simpkins played in the Arena League from 2002-2008 after lettering at SU in 1998-2000.
Willie Sydnor played for the 1982 Steelers after lettering for SU in 1981. He, too must have been a draftee or free agent but is not so listed in the Media Guide.
Nate Trout was in AF2 in 2002 after kicking for SU in 1996-1999.
Keon Walker was in AF2 in 2004 after lettering in 1999-2002.
Jason Walters played in the Arena League in 1999-2004 after lettering at SU in 1994-1997.
Thomas Whitfield played in the CFL in 2005-2007 after lettering at SU in 2005-2007.

Warren Harvey played in the USFL in 1983 but he lettered at Syracuse in 1976-79 and I'm only looking at the Carrier Dome Era. The mystery man is Emile Palmer, who played for the Bears in 1998 and NFL Europe in 1997-99. He's not listed as a letterman. I'm missing some Media Guides from 1992-1994 but he was true freshman in 1991. Upperdeck's site lists him as a redshirt freshman in 1992 and then nothing. So I guess he enver lettered. I've never been sure what you have to do to get a letter but in this list I'm going under the assumption that if you didn't letter you didn't contribute very much to that year's team, (even if you did score a touchdown on a fumble return vs. Miami, as Giovanni DeLoatch did), so I'm leaving you off the list for that year. I'll do the same with Emile Palmer. Sorry, Emile.

Most of these guys were barely playign at "the next level" after their SU careers- in some cases a while later. But the idea is that if they did play on the next level, they must have been good college players, so i'll add them to the list. "AFL will mean they played in the Arena League or AF2. "CFL" means they played in Canada. "NFLE" will be NFL-Europe. "USFL" will be the Untied States Football League. The players who played in the NFL but were not listed in the "Draft Selections and free Agents" seciton will be designated as "NFL". I'll put Joseph, Ruff and Sydnor there, even though they probalby should have been listed in both sections.

The Media Guide also has a section on awards SU players have won in the pros. It shows pro bowlers, (they bowl, too?), All- AFC and NFC teams, All pro teams, All rookie teams, And various individual awards, including NFC player of the year, (Donovan McNabb, 2000, and the Golden Toe award, (Gary Anderson, 1998- did he use his toe?). Nobody else in the Carrier Dome era has won one of those individual awards. The All-Conference teams seem similar to the Pro Bowl designations, (and they are essentially the same players), so I'll consider them an equal designation. "All-Pro" would be a little above that so I'll give a player "PB" if they made the Pro Bowl or the All-Conference team but "AP" if they made the All-Pro team. "POY" will be player of the year and "GT" golden toe, (not Gerogia Tech).
