Coach Autry’s radio show is on Thursdays, (Wednesdays until the Dino Babers Show ends) from 7-8 or 9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show is at Carrabba's Italian Grill at 550 Towne Drive, Fayetteville, NY. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which usually begins with the conference season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality. Last year they did a third half hour segment on Twitch.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
“Coach, we continue to drive aggressively to the basket in both the half court and on the fast break, regardless of where the defenders are located. The result is very high difficulty shots with the hope that we’ll get a foul called on the defense. We seemed to do better on offense when we looked to pass when the route to the basket was blocked. Would you like to see your players keep the ball moving more and not try to take on the defense by themselves?”

(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. The quotes may not be verbatim –they are from my scribbled notes. I have not knowingly changed the meaning.)
Coach Autry said having no Saturday game “seemed like a lay-off”. I was worried. I was surprised when we jumped out with such energy. We had been in the gym a lot and we practice in 4 minute stretches to simulate play. You want to have a plan and set it in motion. You want to see your team grow and we are growing. BC is a good a team and they fought back.” Matt noted that they’d won 5 in a row and scored 95 points in their last game. “Late in the first half we were looking in the record book to find anything to compare it to.” [BC had just 9 points with 3:30 left in the half.]
I called in my question. AA: “We always stress getting the best shot possible. When you are watching, you can see some things but it’s harder playing the game. There going to be mistakes. We are built to be an aggressive team on offense and defense. Some shots are difficult but we make a lot of them. And the other team is playing defense, too. We tell them that it’s sometimes better to pass out. We want to get down and create as many possessions as possible.”
Matt noticed that there were no, (few) whistles to start the game and “there were some tired-looking Dudes out there.” (Don’t tell JB). AA: “We wanted to keep going. I felt we’re in better shape. We did a good job jumping out on them. We really popped it in the first 13-15 minutes that way.” [I wished we popped more shots in the basket.] “You know the comeback is coming. I kept telling them that BC would come back.”
John in Liverpool called in an ill-timed question about the Maui Classic. He wants it held in Honolulu all the time and Chaminade should not be a part of it. John is tired of hearing that that’s a win that doesn’t count. [Didn’t New Hampshire count, either?] AA: “It counts on my record.” Matt asked if John has been to Maui. “Yes. Honolulu is just as beautiful and it has a bigger auditorium.” Adrian noted that Mau had bene through such a tragic fire and he honored the people there for still being able to put the event. Matt pointed out that Chaminade is the sponsor of the tournament and not allowing them in would be like having a New Year’s Eve party at your house and not inviting you. Besides they only appear in every other tournament now. Back to current events.
Pat, (20Plus) called in. He said that people underestimate BC’s offense. “What we did to them on defense is something we haven’t seen for a long time. 9PM starts are bad for crowds. I really appreciate the brand of basketball you are instilling in the players. You seem to be moving faster than the players sometimes. Why aren’t they pushing it at the start?” AA: We are. We’re in the top 30 in pace. I’d like to push it more but you also want to be settled up.” {I interpreted that to mean proper spacing or being able to maintain your own defense.] “We’ll try to get better.”
Pat tried to get in another question. Matt, who has been cutting me off after the initial question, relented. “How well is Taylor shooting in practice? Could he slide to the 3?” AA: Shooting is tough. He got his best looks in a while last night. There’s not much difference between the 3 and the 4. Sometimes you can create a mismatch. We’ve used Copeland at the 4 sometimes.”
Matt went to some questions from the customers at Carrabba’s. AA: “You’ve got me really talking tonight.” Bill from East Syracuse wanted to know how much synergy there was between the Su basketball and football programs with the two new coaches. AA: The energy has been great. Coach Brown was there last night. He keeps signing another recruit every day. I wonder if they have enough roster spots for all of them. (Laughs.) With that and women’s basketball and lacrosse getting ready to start, it’s an exciting time at SU and the energy level is high.” Matt noted that we are 11th in the Learfield Cup standings for the best overall athletic program. “7 of the top 15 teams are ACC teams.” [That probably includes the newcomers. Stanford and Cal are usually high in those standings.]
David asked which NFL team was the coach’s favorite and who he likes in the Super Bowl. AA: “It was the Jets when I was growing up. Now I just watch football. (Laughs, along with Matt.) I just want a good game to watch. I choose them for the match-up.”
Mike asked what NBA player the coach would like to have on his team. “M.J.!” Matt: “I think he meant current players.” AA: “LeBron.” (Duuuhhh…)
Chase, [probably a young fan], asked if Adrian liked being the coach at SU. AA: “I like it when they listen to me and we win.” [What if they don’t listen to him and we win, or they listen to him and we lose?]
He likes it here because he “kind of grew up here” and he and his family have now been part of this community for a long time.
Richie wondered why we sometimes don’t have any rebounders on the line when we attempt free throws. AA: “It depends on the situation. We want to avoid cheap fouls and to get back on defense.” {Also how good the shooter is?] “It’s about the game situation.”
Matt noted that Mcleod’s foot injury could make him unavailable “for the next few games”. AA: “He’s getting evaluated by the doctors and specialists. Our main concern is for the athlete, now and for after he stops wearing our uniform. The big guys carry a little more on their feet than most people.”
Matt asked about the “brain drain in football” with Lou Saban and Bill Belichick retiring, (although maybe not Belichick quite yet) on successive days. (He didn’t add Pete Carroll.) AA: “I’ve read both Saban’s and Belichick’s books. I watch what they say whenever they make an appearance. They don’t mince words.” [Belichick sure doesn’t.] You have to pay attention to them. They’ve had success and consistency. Of course, they say it’s not about the x’s and o’s – it’s about the Jimmys and the Joes.” [I always thought it was the Johnny’s and Joe’s. – and Joe transferred to Clemson.] He noted that Tom Brady made a nice tribute to his old coach.
They went through the recent ACC results. AA?: “Carolina is really, really good. They’ve won 6-7 games in a row, (actually 5), and have one of the best defenses in the country, having held three straight opponents under 60 points.” Matt said their defense is #8 in KenPom. “They’ve lost to Connecticut and Kentucky. [And Villanova, a pretty good group – 10 of the last 20 NCAA natties] AA: “They have good team balance and senior leadership and are playing as well as any team in the country.” Virginia Tech smashed Clemson 87-72. The Tigers have no lost 3 in a row to go from 11-1 to 11-4. AA said “Blacksburg, the ‘Castle’, is a tough place to play.” [He should know.] “Clemson is having a rough patch.“ U of Miami losing to Louisville at home was a surprise. AA: “They get out of whack stopping people at times…I call that the conference. There are no gimmies.” [But plenty of Owies.]

She didn’t do it all at SU: she had quite a career at Buffalo, also under Coach Legette-Jack.
Americu sponsors both the show and a table for the broadcast. A question came in from that table. “How has this team reacted to the ups and downs of the season?” AA: “Really well. The guys from last year see that we’re in a better place than last year. We’ve also got perspectives from the players who have played at Kansas, Auburn, Florida State and Notre Dame.” Matt: “These guys are not coming from junior college. They are sophomores but they have had legitimate experience at this level.”
