My Question(s)

“Coach, we are 24th in the country in gaining yards but 67th in scoring points. We’ve scored 58 points in the first quarter, 44 in the second and 20 each in the third and fourth quarters. What can be done to be more efficient at turning yards into points and to maintain that efficiency throughout the game? “

The Show

(I sometimes re-arrange the comments so that statements made on the same subject are reported together, even if they came at different points of the show.)

(They were still in the Cavalier Room. They will move to Shaughnessy’s when it is finished. )

They talked about Dave Clawson’s rebuilding program at Wake Forest. It’s “on schedule”. Clawson was Baber’s predecessor at Bowling Green and thus has a head start in building his program vs. Babers. Babers says Dave’s concept is different than his. “You bring in a recruiting class, then redshirt everybody. Then you bring another class and redshirt them. Then in the third year you have plenty of depth and if the schedule is favorable, you’ll have a winning record. He has guys who have lost a lot- they’ve gone 3-9 his first two years. But they’ve played a lot, too. Now they are 401. The problem with this approach is that you leave your juniors and seniors as ‘dead men walking’. I believe in not giving up a year or two and trying to win every year. “

Regarding the Notre Dame game – the second time the other team has scored on their first play this year. “Everybody needs to get used to seeing fireworks in our games- just hopefully not on the opposito9n’s first play.” That guy was a fantastic athlete - 3 guys had a shot at him. We’ve had deep discussions and pow-wows to figure out how to prevent that from happening again but at elast we know that if it does, our guys know how to fight back from it. “

Injury report: Parris Bennett will play in this game, as will Kielan Whitner. Kayton Samuels is a game-time decision. “They will travel with the team and be in gear. They may not be 100% but sometimes you have to play when you aren’t 100%.” Cody Conway, Jason Emerich, Omari Palmer and the little used Keaton Darney will be out for this game.

I got to my question. I started by noting that the coach was baking cakes and I wondered if he had time to bake a birthday cake for me next week. I allowed as how a victory over Wake Forest would be a nice present if hadn’t the time. I mentioned our offense this year had been kind of a soufflé.

The Coach suggested that statistics are sometimes misleading. “Sometimes in the fourth quarter you are playing with 2’s and 3’s, (second and third stringers) and playing for the game to be over. The third quarter is the issue. We had chances against Louisville, South Florida and Notre Dame. We’ve got to find a way to start faster in the second half. It’s never been an issue in my four years as head coach. It’s bene more us than them. They make adjustments but we can make adjustments to their adjustments. We are dealing with young people. You can gain a lot of yards in the middle of the field. It gets harder in the red zone. We’ve to make great calls and find a way to score in those situations.”

Liam in Pompey, as usual was concerned about the bad calls in the game. He was also worried about the hurricane. Dino said that with every new conference he joins, he attends the summer meeting of the referees to see how they are going to call things. He asks “If you are going to make mistakes. Be consistent for both teams and for four quarters so we and the other team can adjust to what you are calling. If we can do that, the game will come out fair.” As to the weather, it will play a major part in the game- rain and wind, with no telling how much of both. . The first and second half may be different. Both teams will have to adjust.”

Matt mentioned that Floyd Little was in the house. “It’s not every day that the franchise drops by”

Mack in Weedsport asked what a Special Teams Quality Control Specialist did. HCDB: “It’s a low-paying entry level a lot of simple tasks – they just do what the special teams coach (Tom Kauffman).” Mack wanted to know if he’s contemplating any other changes in the staff. Coach said no and asked us to count the coaches we see at places like Ohio State or Alabama- they are about twice the number of coaches here. “They not only coach but they break down opponents and recruit.”

John in Baltimore called this game the “Bowling Green Bowl”. He wanted to know if Brisley Estime was more valuable as a pass receiver or as a kick returner and if in the weather conditions at Wake we might see more of Jordan Fredericks or Erv Phillips running the ball. Coach: “B” will be our punt returner until he graduates or goes to the pros. He’ll be out there unless he gets tired and taps his helmet. Jordan is getting better each week and he can put more weight behind it than anyone. Erv’s run was the best one we’ve had this season. We need more of that sort of effort. Anytime we can get more of that on the football field, we’re going to get more of it.”

“We have to be careful playing a team dedicated to shortening the game. They are dedicated to protecting their right to punt. Hurricane Matthew falls right into their wheelhouse. .

They talked about Wake Forest’s punter- they had an Australian style punter for four years. They have a new guy and he’s hurt. This led to a discussion about Sterling Hofrichter trying the Aussie style against Notre Dame. “They don’t have normal athletes and we were concerned about getting a punt blocked. That play will remain in a our arsenal. “

Matt said that Dave Clawson was ”spewing” praise for Eric Dungey and our receivers.

They do have a defensive end, Duke Ejiofor, who is “sacking everybody”. Coach said that what Erci has done is “very impressive. He’s gone from running an option offense to the 10th rated passer in the country. But he still makes mistakes. We’re in a race for perfection.”

Dino introduced Vinson Reynolds, his defensive line coach, as having “outstanding character, a family man – the positive smear comes off on him.”

Dino said that he saw the quality of his coach when he was at Western Michigan – his line helped beat Dino 14-26 his first year at Bowling green but Dino got him 41-27 the second year, “But their line still played well. If you watch enough tape, you can see who is well coached. He’s part of our family now and he will be for a long period of time.”

Coach Reynolds was neighbors with Mike Hart for two years at Western Michigan. They went from 1-11 to consecutive 8-5 years there. He discussed several players:

Kendall Coleman: he’d recruited him to Western Michigan and he changed his commitment to Syracuse Coleman “has all the intangibles. He cares about the little things. He soaks up everything you tell him and he gives everything he has.”

Kris Slayton: “the toughest dude we’ve got up front. He’s smart – you don’t have to tell him anything twice. He comes to work eveyr day. He can do the three technique, (translation: play tackle) or play outside. I think we’ll have him inside for this game.”

Josh Black is “moving up the depth chart. Like Coleman he doesn’t have much in the stats yet – no sacks so far. But they keep working and you’ve got to give them a pat on the back.

Matt said all three were freshmen, (actually Slayton is a sophomore). Reynolds said “We don’t look at them as freshmen – we’ve got to throw out the freshmen card. There’s a lot of youth but a lot of good can come from that. Someday we’ll have third year starters but right now I like this group. I’d fight anybody with them.“

Against Notre Dame “We held our own against the run and had good lane integrity. We need to do better transitioning from defending the run to defending the pass. I hope we can get to the quarterback this week. That Notre Dame left tackle (Mike McGilinchy 6-7 310), was the bets I’ve seen.

They talked about Kayton Samuels possibly being able to play – won’t he be a little rusty? Reynolds said that there’s no way to avoid that. “We try to keep them involved watching film and doing cardio but he couldn’t’ do much fo that with his injury. You definitely lose something.”

Matt mentioned that Coach Reynolds was here with his family, including someone he could not mention that Syracuse fans will hear about down the road.

Coach’s movie pick is “The Last of the Mohicans”. “It’s about the British-American War” (Actually it’s about the French and Indian War.) “You have a father and son and a boyfriend and a girlfriend who had each other’s backs. Sit down with your wife or girlfriend and watch it sometime.” Matt pointed out it takes place in these parts and that Cooperstown is named after its author, James Fenimore Cooper.

Does anybody have any comments on anything the coach said?
