- I guess for tragedy we look to Houston but Antwan Cordy must be thinking that life is pretty unfair right now. After having a season ending injury in the second game last year, he was injured midway through the first quarter. He came up to make a tackle and, typically, threw his whole body into it but got knocked backwards. He tried to get up with his teammate’s help but collapsed back to the turf. Eventually the medical staff helped him up and the exited the field with his arms around their shoulders. He was walking on both feet, somewhat gingerly. It was later said he had a lower body injury, although it didn’t seem to be a knee. He was later seen on crutches with a boot on the injured leg. He is a fine defensive back and the emotional leader of the defense. Coach Babers was so upset he couldn’t talk about it after the game. He may, once again, be out for the year having spent a year rehabbing from his previous injury only to have his season once again end in the first half of the first game. As Bud Poliquin likes to say, football eats it’s young.

- Our running game looked exactly like it did last year: runs up the middle into the waiting arms of the defense. We just can seem to block anybody, even a low-level FCS team. Dontae Strickland looked just as ineffectual as last year, despite an early 6 yard TD burst. He had 11 other carries for 32 yards. Moe Neal had 7 carries for 17 yards. His one big play was on a pass into the flat, where he had room to maneuver. Markenzy Pierre looked pretty lively getting 46 yards on 8 carries but that was late in the game when the reserves were in for both side. Eric Dungy was once again our leading rusher with 51 yards on 9 carries. Several of those were scrambles but several we planned runs of the sort the staff had to resort to last year to generate some rushing yards after the conventional stuff had failed.

- And, of course Dungey running is exactly what the staff wants to avoid, whether it’s a scramble or a planned play. The time bomb is still ticking. Those scrambles indicated another problem: our receivers, especially Custis, were having trouble getting separation from the FCS guys covering them. A lot of passes were completed within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. But when we passed downfield, there were not a lot of open receivers.

- Part of that problem was that we continued to throw everything to the sideline until midway through the third quarter. At first it worked but the Blue Devils started flooding the passing zones knowing they didn’t have to worry about the middle of the field. Finally we hit a couple of passes down the middle and they were wide open. Maybe this was an example of purposely setting up a tendency to set up something else but we took an awful long time to press the button. The new tight end, Tavian Pierce caught three passes for 4 yards. There were several plays where he was wide open over the middle but Dungey never looked at him. Maybe it was because we were playing a FCS opponent and we didn’t want to show them too much. I hope so.

- Chris Gedney called Rex Culpepper Rex Grossman at least three times. Rex Grossman is a former Chicago Bear, Houston Texans and Washington Redskins quarterback who is 37 years old and has been retired for five years. I thought he might have been the bears quarterback when Gedney was there but their careers did not overlap.

The phrase 'moral victory' was used by the announcers a few times to describe CCSU's performance.
They were picked in the preseason to finish 4th in their division.
SU should have dominated every minute of this game.

7-50 vs. a team that finished 4-8 last year is a "moral victory"?

Considering:
- the huge gap in the level of talent
- the fact that they stuffed SU's running game
- CCSU got more turnovers than SU
- it was an away game for CCSU, playing at the Dome, against an FBS team for the first time since 2007,

I agree that it was kind of a moral victory for CCSU.

A 'moral victory' gets you a free serving of 'jumbo shrimp'
