Jim Boeheim’s radio show is on Thursdays from 7-9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show originates from Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse on Erie Boulevard in Syracuse. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which begins with the conference season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality.

The first hour is eventually, (it can take weeks) podcasted on the SU Athletics website on this page:
http://suathletics.com/podcasts.aspx
(Update: the last podcast is a preview of the first Duke game from last year so maybe they have stopped podcasting the show. )

You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:
http://cuse.com/sb_output.aspx?form=4

The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometime simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: http://tunein.com/radio/WGVA-1240-s29191/

I will be posting my rough transcript of the first hour the night of the broadcast and will probably do the second hour the following day.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

First hour:

“Coach, SU fans have been left to imagine what this team would have been like with Tyler Ennis and Jerami Grant. You mentioned in your book that you thought they should stay another year but they listened to people who said that they would go higher in the draft than they actually did. Is it time to allow players to declare for the draft but retain their college eligibility and the option to return to their college teams if they don’t get drafted where they wanted to be?”

Second hour:

“Coach, I have another idea about increasing player’s options and bringing back some of the talent to the college level. People leave college for jobs and then come back to complete their education all the time outside of sports. What if players who leave school with eligibility left could try their hand at pro ball and, if it doesn’t work out, they could come back to school to get their degree and play for their school team? Would there be any downside to that? Jonny Flynn could be our point guard this year. “

COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject)

Matt suggested there might be things to feel good about in the Michigan game- a close road loss to a ranked team. JB wasn’t having it. “I don’t feel good about 19 turnovers. If you feel good about that you’re not paying attention. I’m usually the opposite of what the fans are feeling. The only thing that matter is winning and losing.”

“We made some good plays at the end of the Iowa game and some bad plays at the end of this one. The Iowa game wasn’t an educational experience- it didn’t help us make good plays here. And this loss won’t be educational, either.. Last year we made 10-15 great plays in crunch time and then may two bad ones at the end of the Dayton game. It’s best to play well so it doesn’t come down to crunch time. It’s hard to even talk about 19 turnovers….” Matt noted that that was our highest total since the 2013 BET championship game vs. Louisville. JB: “That was our fourth game in four days and against a pressing team. I think all our turnovers came at the end of the game.”

Later Pat called in to suggest that “a token press in front of the zone would give the other team less time on the clock.” JB disagreed. “Our press isn’t very good.” He says that every year but this year “”We aren’t a good pressing team . We’re not quick or deep enough. A token press doesn’t work- you’re expending energy and not gaining anything from it. Besides we can’t put Rakeem back there- he’d pick up too many fouls. Last year we could do it with Baye. Michigan would have gotten wide open shots. They use four guards and are too good at ball handling, passing and shooting.” Matt added that you want your two guard in positon to cut off entry passes into the top of the key. JB: “The press is not a good option against any good ball handling or shooting team.”

A caller named Kent suggested we had an advantage because Michigan’s point guard, (derrick Walton) was hurt- a toe injury. JB pointed out that he played 26 minutes and that his replacement- Spike Albrecht was better. He had 11 points and 9 rebounds. “We’d rather have played against Walton.”

I called in my questions, which are related. Jim said that both proposals have been talked about in meetings at the NCA and the American Association of basketball coaches. They aren’t quite ready to go that far. But they want to extend the deadline to declare for the draft to the end of May because the NBA holds their workouts in May, after the school year ends. Players could try out for 4-5 teams and get a much better idea of where they will be drafted. It wouldn’t be based on rumors or what ESPN guys say. A panel of NBAS experts would meet at the workouts and tell the players what they need to know. They also want to negotiate with the NBA and the player’s association to extend the minimum to two years. The problem with ex-pros coming back is that you’d have to “re-recruit” them and their arrival might spoil things for the younger players. The coaches just felt it would be too chaotic. (I don’t know why it would be more chaotic than bringing in transfers or JUCO players. And the “recruiting” would probably be done in a few phone calls, much less complicated than recruiting high school guys.) “The NBA with only two rounds wouldn’t like the players to not sign with them. They’d be out of luck.”

“I’m not sure where Jonny Flynn is now- we’ve got players playing in France and Russia, everywhere. I’m also not sure of the state of his health. Jerami Grant got a 2 year deal out of the Sixers as they had no players Michael Carter-Williams is doing as well as he can do. They don’t have a lot. In a way it’s a good experience. He gets to play all the time. With 80 games per year, he’ll get to be a real good player. Jerami Grant will get the same opportunity. Tyler Ennis went to a team with a lot of guards. How he got back so soon with so many guard I don’t know. They could trade him but the teams with the top draft choices won’t want to give them up and the lower draft picks aren’t good picks. They won’t want to just give him away. They’ll probably hold onto him one of the other guys leaves so he’ll be ready”

I also suggested a motto for this young team: evolution, aided by intelligent design. Coach liked it.

A caller praised JB for “losing good players and coming back with even better ones. JB: “Not this year. We had two seniors last year. We’ve got only one this year. We can still get to be a good team. It will take a lot of work. It’s hard to maintain the level we were at for six years- winning 30 games a year. It was a miracle we were in the Michigan game with so many turnovers. We did make a pretty good play on Albrecht. Cooney almost got there. If you can make them take a tough, off-balance three, you did well. “Matt said “it wanted to peak out.” JB: “We held Michigan to the lowest percentage from two point and three point range they’ll probably be held to at home all year.”

St. John’s “gives you an old Big East vibe.” JB: St. John’s goes way back before the big east. It was always a big rivalry. We played them when I played so it goes back at least to the early 60’s. Bill Wennington, Walter Berry, Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson. They had great players.” (Per the media guide we first played them in 1912 and 1913. We also played them in 1931, 1945, 1946, 1951, 1953 and every year since 1960. “ They’ve lost once- to a really good Gonzaga team- maybe the best we’ve seen. Obekpa is a tremendous shot blocker. They can pressure you, run, change defenses. They have veteran guys who know how to play It will be a very, very tough game. .” How do you deal with a shot blocker? “You can’t give them space”

“Louisiana Tech is also very good- they were just short of winning the NIT last year. They are a very good team. Eastern Michigan is off to a 7-0 start. I think they’ll have a big year this year. We have a very challenging schedule. Our sophomores may as well be freshmen. Even Rakeem is getting the ball twice has much as before. Michael has a larger role. And we have a freshman point guard.”

Matt mentioned that Eastern Michigan had more Detroit area players than Michigan did. “John stresses having good shooters and passers. There’s not as many city kids who are good at that. It’s a different sty6le. They are very good vs. zones. We did a good job. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO REALIZE IT’S NOT YOUR DEFENSE THAT LOSES GAMES. IT’S YOUR OFFENSE. OUR OFFENSE LOST BOTH GAMES.” (I did that in caps so a certain poster can read it.)

(I’ll report on the topics not directly related to the team and it’s current games tomorrow.)

Great recap as always SWC. JB is right about that being way too many turnovers- especially so many unforced errors. (Why doesn't basketball track this like tennis?). This SU team can't afford that many empty possessions against good teams.

I believe that the proposed extension of the college requirement to two years is only part of the solution. I don't see how that is going to help matters, unless it is in conjunction with giving HS players the option to head directly into the pros, and an expanded D-League and NBA draft. If that occurs, I'd say it makes sense and while some talent will turn pro, having players for more than a year will make for better teams.

I think it's short-sighted to think that the problem of players not wanting to be in college can be solved by making them stay in college longer.

Thanks for the write up.
JB is clearly not happy with this team and isn't holding back.

On the NBA draft deadline we can blame ACC coaches Roy Williams/Leonard Hamilton for lobbying the NCAA coaches at a NAB meeting to move the deadline earlier so they could recruit for their selfish needs and not have to wait for the players to decide.

I love how he said John stresses for shooters as we could use a couple these past few years. JB is clearly thinking just a NCAA tournament season will be tough and we as fans get that. If we make the dance this will have been a successful season. I wish somebody would ask him if we are using any of the 3 available scholarships on walkons this year.

JB seems particularly "negative" right now, and I am hoping that he is less so with the players during practices or in the locker room. I hope that after the Michigan game he did not eviscerate his two freshmen (although he may have eviscerated everyone for the 19 turnovers).

However, I suppose it is our jobs as fans to see the good in our team and feel hopeful (while acknowledging our weaknesses) and I suppose it's Coach's job to see all the mistakes (while acknowledging the things his team is doing better). I could never be a coach. I don't have the stomach or the heart for it, and I certainly don't have the brains!

As much as folks in leadership positions try to remain positive and level headed I do believe that JB is openly disgruntled about Ennis and Grant leaving. He has recruited exceptionally well over the past decade and has lost folks early to the NBA as a result. I do not think even he though thought a slightly framed freshman point guard who averaged 11 points and 5 assists a game was a one and done player. Grant was also still tremendously raw. Hard to build a consistent winner with the revolving carousel they have been the last few years. With Grant and Ennis this is a top 10 team, imagine McCollough, Grant and X-mas as the front line with Roberson and potentially Coleman coming off the bench. How about Ennis and Cooney in the backcourt with Joesph coming off the bench. Gbinijie could swing between the 2 and 3 spot. This team would be very good instead of what we have now which is a work in progress - and McCollough will be gone next year. Perpetually young, talented and raw.

When I read between the lines with his his comments I see this disclaimer: "how can you expect us to be good when guys keep leaving early?"

Noticed the same. Many posters suggested and myself included months ago that this was going to be Boeheim's most difficult and challenging 'teaching' job of his career maybe. Especially considering his age, level of patience, etc. Granted, the assistants do the yeoman's work (especially at Syracuse) but hopefully he displays more of the encouraging/energetic leadership and less of the surly/negative kind with this bunch.

I don't think he's being overly negative or curmudgeonly for calling out 19 TO's. It's all part of building a team. While I agree that the younger players probably didn't "learn" (in an academic sense) how to make clutch plays between Iowa and UM, in another month I doubt they make the same mistakes.

For sure. No question. I meant more behind the scenes with the team.

Albrect didn't make an off-balance three. He stepped into it, a good stride behind the line, with no one near him.

Boeheim says things.

TC got there, a hair late. But he made a pretty good swipe at it. Albrect just canned it. I have to give it up to him. He's clutch from deep in big games. Other than that he's an irritating little tool.

I also question this notion that he was surprised that Ennis and Grant left. If so, maybe JB and the staff should pay more attention to Chad Ford's Big Board. Of course, Grant wasn't "ready" but I knew before last season that odds were he'd be gone, and with the way Ennis played right away, it was clear he was better than anticipated.

I don't expect, or want, him to say it to the media, but I assume the staff felt that BJ/Patterson would have developed enough to give the roster more outside options. Unlike football, we aren't talking about 2 star recruits here, so I would imagine some frustration there.

eh, like he said, Trevor was just about there - "no one near him" is just not true - and that was very, very deep as well. not saying it was great defense but you can live with that shot

We'll live with it, but I didn't like it even before Albrecht took the pass.

Hyperbole on my part - Cooney was near him, but for all intents and purposes it's a wide-open look. When a shooter like that steps into a shot and gets his feet set with a defender a body-length away (and closing), it's an open shot.

Agreed. He obviously got sucked in too deep. Albrecht is the type of player both Beilein and Boeheim has said plays well against zones. It was just disappointing that the guards let him get into the paint so easily off the dribble. He may be a "pissant" but he's a good passer obviously and a good decision maker as well.

That's what surprised me. The shooting, OK, it happens. It'd be better if we pushed him out, but we're young.

Albrecht's ability to dribble into the lane from the elbow, though...yikes. Poor Kaleb Joseph has probably heard about that 100 times during practice this week.

I agree that a lack of depth makes it difficult to press especially for extended minutes. But I can't help but think if Pitino coached our guys the press would be 100% better. He just knows how to teach it. Our guys are certainly athletic enough and more so than many teams you see with a good press.

The depth at center is a legitimate concern. So's our youth. But you're right, of course. Boeheim doesn't want to press, so he'll search for excuses. This year, the excuses happen to be valid reasons.

For the record, I don't think lack of press is hurting us. Stick with what we do best, bring the young kids up to speed.

The rest of it:

There was the inevitable discussion of the top teams in the country. And the Duke Wisconsin game. “Duke is right behind Kentucky and Arizona is getting there. Louisville is good. Duke shot 65% and Wisconsin is a good defensive team. Duke is very quick and gets to the basket. Okafor will be the top pick in the draft. They’ve got as good freshman point guard, too.”

They also talked about the SEC-Big 12 challenge that was beginning with a game between West Virginia and LSU that was on TV at Delmonico’s. Jim praised the Mountaineers extensively, saying that it’s “Bob Huggins’ best team in many years. West Virginia has been down, player-wise for 3-4 years. They are very physical and have really good big guys and guards.“ Texas will be playing Kentucky but their injured guard is still out. Florida, who “doesn’t have a lot of guys” will play Kansas. The Big 12 is very strong this year. It’s not just Kansas. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas are all good.” Regarding the nature of that conference, which only 10 teams, despite their name, with everybody playing everybody else twice. JB felt that that was the way to do things if you could, much as it was done in the Old Big East.

“Kentucky is “bigger than most NBA teams”, (actually only the Trailblazers are bigger), and those guys are not skinny guys. They are 7 footers that weight 250 pounds. Kentucky doesn’t just have pro players. They are (going to be) great pros. The SEC is down and they may be able to at least get through the regular season undefeated. It would take a really crazy night for them to lose in the regular season. Somebody might be able to beat them in the post-season.”

They discussed the strength and style of play of the different conferences. “There’s not much difference any more. The Old Big East was physical compared to any conference.“ West Virginia is having trouble with the distances they have to travel for Big 12 games- the closest is something like 800 miles. They are scheduling road trips with multiple games for them. They talked about the student fan bases. In the Big East, they played in a lot of big city arenas. In the ACC, the students are more prominent because you are on campuses. “It’s a better atmosphere.”

Gomez suggested that the Big Ten-ACC challenge showed that “The middle of the ACC is soft”. JB felt it was the bottom of the conference that is the problem. “Notre Dame is better than people thought. Miami has two good transfer guards, great players. UNC will come back.”

Ken Pomeroy says this is the slowest paced season since he’s bene keeping track of things. JB: “We need a shot clock – 30 seconds would be more like it but 24 seconds would be better.” Christopher asked if JB pays attention to ‘adjusted’ stats like tempo and efficiency. “The only adjusted stat I look at is effective field goal percentage, which you if you make 8 threes you refigure it as if you made four more shots. I do know that while we didn’t score a lot last year because the other team slowed it down, we had a good efficiency rating.”

Jim is getting the Wayman Tisdale Humanitarian Award on Aril 14. It’s given out at the National Western Heritage and Cowboy Museum:
http://cuse.com/news/2014/12/4/BoeheimTisdale12414.aspx?path=mbasket
He briefly recalled losing to Tisdales’ team and how tough a player he was to beat but “I got to know him. He was a musician and a nice guy”

Rakeem Christmas has been nominated for the Allstate Good Works team:
http://www.cuse.com/news/2014/12/2/ChristmasGoodWorks12314.aspx#.VIHJDjHF-Ec
“He’s a great kid, a nice guy. He’s graduated in three years, quite an accomplishment.”

The Boeheim foundation is selling jackets and shirts through Manny’s ‘honoring’ the famous Duke ‘Jacket’ game, (or whatever you want to call it):
http://www.localsyr.com/story/d/sto...l-of-fame-coachs/18354/DAaZI_7VKE2XL5vL8lcyYg
So if you want to honor a tantrum…at least it’s for a good cause.

They discussed JB’s books with Jack McCallum, “who did a great job telling the story but telling it using my words the way I would use them. We did tapes going over the historical stuff.” The book might have some national interest. “There are Syracuse people in every city.”

JB praised the work of Dr, Gross in building up the athletic program. We are currently #1 in the Athletic Director’s Cup standings:
http://www.syracuse.com/orangesport...rectors_cup_standings_for_the_first_time.html
“It’s been an unbelievable fall season: Cross Country, Field Hockey, Soccer. We have great coaches in those sports. We have only 16 sports. Some schools have 24 or 26 sports. Yet we’re as good as anybody.” (Bob Casullo on “Upon Further Review this week strongly implied that one of the problems with the football team is that too much money has been spent on these other sports in pursuit of the AD’s Cup. )

Then there was the restart in the Sixers first win of the season: they played the first 16 seconds of the game and there was a foul and a guy was waiting for the ball at the foul line when the refs realized that the reams were facing the wrong goals. “They could have just continued the game at the opposite goals, rather than starting over again. In college there’s a rule that you start at the opposite end and finish at your end, (determined by the positon of the benches). I believe in the NBA they have a choice.”

They talked about the recent coaching changes in college football. Gomez said that the cab drivers in Detroit told him how popular Brady Hoke had been. Coach: “It’s not about being a nice guy. It’s about winning. The idea that it has to be a Michigan guy is silly. Nick Saban never saw Alabama until they hired him. Ironically, the coach they fired is about to be named Coach of the year in the Pac 12. I guess he just wasn’t a good fit there. Jim McElwain is a good fit at Florida. He was the Alabama offensive coach. He was a winner at Colorado State. If you are at Colorado State and you win, you’re going somewhere else. But they’ll get a good chunk of money for him. The buy-out is $7 million. Florida is playing $5 million and he’s paying the rest but his salary is being increased by $2 million, so that’s not a problem. It’s expensive but they are getting a good coach and he’s an offensive guy. Colorado State will get a lot of money for its athletic program. Nebraska has a proven coach. He’s bene at an out of the way school. They aren’t as capable now that they are in the Big Ten, with Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin and Iowa, who are closer to the good players.” .

UAB has dropped football. They aren’t getting invited to a bowl, even though they are bowl-eligible. “I wonder if they have to leave the conference. It can be very dangerous to do that. Where are they going to be? They have to find a place to stay.”

Dave Bing and Derrick Coleman were at the Michigan game. “They are good Syracusans” Gomez said the cab driver spoke well of Mayor Bing. JB: “He came in at the wrong time. It was a herculean task.”

It was mentioned that Jim’s son, (also named Jim) had a big game for Jamesville-Dewitt High School:
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.co...s-career-night-and-j-d-blows-past-notre-dame/
Maybe Jimmy was the player to be named later in the deals that got SU Danny Schayes, Andy Rautins, Brandon Triche and DaJuan Coleman. JB: “(They ahd a good opening game. It’s always fun to see your son play. He’s a good shooter. “

This prompted a discussion of DaJuan Coleman’s situation. He’s just over the limit to get an extra year from the NCAA. “If he starts next week he’ll have a year and a half. He’s practiced a little more in the least ten days. A decision will be made in the next 2-3 weeks, (whether he’ll play this year). He’s a fantastic teammate. He attends every practice and every game. He’s been in rehab 5-6 days a week, 2 ½ hours a day for 10 months and he did it last year, too. He’s lost weight. I hope he gets rewarded at the end. “

Tiger Woods drove his first drive in the recent tournament out of bounds. JB didn’t think he’d ever done that before. “He didn’t used to hit that awful shot. He doesn’t play enough tournament golf. It’s hard to stay sharp. Tournament golf is a different animal. “

Jim in Fayetteville wanted to know what Coach Boeheim likes to drink. “Pepsi, straight up. Coke, Pepsi or root beer, with an occasional Dr. Pepper. I don’t llke alcohol. Maybe some champagne and orange juice on the holidays. I drank beer in college- everyone did but I never liked it much.

They had a commercial about the Empire Sub Shop in Liverpool. When JB goes to dine in Liverpool, it’s usually Hyde’s but he might have to try the ESS out. They have Cheeseburger subs and tunafish. “Tunafish is not easy to make.” (Only God can make a Tuna).

Hard for me to agree with this regarding Ennis. Carmelo Anthony had a fully matured game and was 6'8" and 225 lbs to boot. He was a legititmate one and done talent. Ennis as a one and done player set the bar incredibly low for what constitutes a first round NBA pick. As evidenced by a team in Pheonix who expended a first round pick on him even though they signed Isiah Thomas in the offseason and already had Dragic and Bledsoe on the roster. He had no shot of being part of their rotation and quite frankly he wasn't ready for it any way. Just another example of how the NBA is sucking the life out of the college game for no apparent benefit to their own league.

I don't think he was surprised. Just disappointed- again. He has the notion that players should maximize their bodies and their shills here before presenting themselves to the NBA and he's right but that's not how decisions are made. maybe is the declaration date was moved forward the decisions would be be better ones.

Talk about burying the lead, SWC.

I don't get this - over the limit?

Coleman played two seasons and got badly injured. He's due two more seasons, plus a redshirt year, if needed.

Hopefully this is just an error in translation. Otherwise, bad (and weird) news.

If he were under the limit he could apply for a medical redshirt and have three season of eligiblity left. But he isn't so he can't.

Ennis was the best true PG in the country last year. After Maui, he was getting accolades from every basketball media member, so saying he wasn't ready or developed has nothing to do with his draft status. We can all agree that the NBA drafts on potential. Right or wrong, it's been that way the last few years, so it shouldn't really surprise anyone when guys leave.

The NBA is a business so of course they are going to do things for their benefit without regard for the college game. How is that different from MLB and NHL letting HS kids turn pro? Does that not hurt the college game? I think Boeheim is right that the deadline should be pushed back, but
