Again this year I’ll be keeping track of those teams in contention for the very real four team College Football Playoff as well as those for my fictional creations, the Pesci Bowl, (named after short but feisty actor Joe Pesci), and the dreaded Ty-D Bowl, named after the toilet bowl cleaning product.

The playoff is four the best four power conference-level teams in the country, (Notre Dame counts as aa power conference team). The Pesci Bowl is for the two best non-power conference teams. The Ty-D Bowl is for the two worst FBS teams in the country. The idea is to track the contenders through their coming schedules, which will tell us what games to look out for. I’ll start with the teams with perfect records: undefeated power conference and non-power conference teams and winless FBS teams. When there are fewer than 3 undefeated power teams or 2 non-power teams or 2 winless teams, then I’ll include the 1 loss and 1 win teams. But for now, we are looking at perfect records.

THE PLAYOFF

Alabama 10-0 (399-112) ranked #1 by the writers, coaches and by the committee
11/18 vs. Mercer 5-5 (270-204) (FCS)
11/25 at Auburn 8-2 (377-169) ranked #6 in both polls and by the committee
Comment: Auburn is always feisty. Then comes probably Georgia in the SEC title game. Would a Georgia-Alabama loser, make the playoff?

U of Miami 9-0 (293-149) ranked #2 by both polls but 3rd by the committee
11/18 vs. Virginia 6-4 (258-266)
11/24 at Pittsburgh 4-6 (249-285)
12/2 ACC title game vs. Clemson 9-1 (327-150) ranked #4/#3 by the polls but #2 by the committee
Comment: The Canes had been barely scraping by. Then they waxed the Hokies and the Irish . Are the old days back? (Note: both Miami and Clemson have clinched their sports in the ACC title game)

Wisconsin 10-0 (363-134) ranked #5/ #4 in the polls and #5 by the committee
11/18 vs. Michigan 8-2 (279-164) ranked #19/#18 by the coaches but #24 by the committee
11/25 at Minnesota 5-5 (265-204)
Comment: They sure passed the test at Iowa. Michigan will be another test. Then probably Ohio State in the Big Ten Title game. Would beating those teams be enough? Could an unbeaten power conference champion be left out of a 4 team playoff?

The Playoff will now include at least one loss team:

Clemson 9-1 (327-150) ranked #4/#3 by the polls but #2 by the committee
11/18 vs. The Citadel 5-5 (234-229)
11/25 at South Carolina 7-3 (248-206)
12/2 ACC title game vs. U of Miami 9-0 (293-149) ranked #2 by both polls but 7th by the committee
Comments: That South Carolina game could be interesting. But it’s likely that the ACC title game will essentially be a quarterfinal, with the winner going to the playoff and the loser to so other bowl.

Georgia 9-1 (346-145) ranked #7 in both polls and by the committee
11/18 vs. Kentucky 7-3 (279-257)
11/25 at Georgia Tech 5-4 (282-211)
Comment: Georgia still has a couple of challenges before they can get a shot at Alabama. A one loss Alabama team could make the playoff but the Bulldogs have to win out.

Oklahoma 9-1 (443-274) ranked #3/#5 by the polls and #4 by the commtitee
11/18 at Kansas 1-9 (204-422)
11/25 vs. West Virginia 7-3 (390-292)
Comments: Kansas will be a walk-over but the Mountaineers won’t. Whoever the Sooners playing the newly minted conference title game will be a team they’ve already beaten.

PESCI BOWL

Central Florida 9-0 (437-186) ranked #14/#12 by the polls but #15 by the committee
11/18 at Temple 5-5 (236-265)
11/24 vs. South Florida 8-1 (352-179) ranked #23/#20 by the coaches but unranked by the committee
Comment: Houston soiled the season-ending party against USF but they didn’t spoil it. It will still decide the division and maybe who gets into the Pesci Bowl.

Memphis 8-1 (381-281) ranked #18/#17 in the polls but #21 by the committee
11/18 vs. Southern Methodist 6-4 (396-322)
11/25 vs. East Carolina 2-8 (238-450)
Comment: Memphis will likely meet the winner of the UCF-USF game in the C-USA finals and the winner of that will go to the Pesci Bowl unless SMU messes things up some more. Could the pesci Bowl be a rematch of two of these three teams?

South Florida 8-1 (352-179) ranked #23/#20 but unranked by the committee
11/16 vs. Tulsa 2-8 (310-380)
11/24 at Central Florida 9-0 (437-186) ranked #14/#12 by the polls but #15 by the committee
Comment: The Bulls and Knights should stampede into the UCF game at 9-1. Will Gameday be there?

Did you know that Central and South Florida are both bigger schools that Florida and Florida State and that they are in much bigger cities and thus better recruiting areas?

We might have to go to the two loss teams: Army 8-2, Boise State 8-2, Ohio U. 8-2, San Diego State 8-2, Toledo 8-2, Troy 8-2

TY-D BOWL

Georgia Southern 0-9 (147-334)
11/18 vs. South Alabama 4-6 (224-244)
11/25 at Louisiana (formerly Louisiana-Lafayette, formerly SW Louisiana) 4-5 (252-349)
12/2 at Coastal Carolina 1-9 (243-384)
Comment: A long time FCS power with many national championships that will never win another because they went for the big bucks in FBS, the Eagles find themselves at 0-8. Maybe they can beat Coastal Carolina, another refugee from FCS.

Texas- El Paso 0-10 (113-371)
11/18 vs. Louisiana Tech 4-6 (283-293)
11/25 at Alabama-Birmingham 7-3 (320-249)
Comment: UTEP, (formerly Texas Western), has had 21 seasons since 1972 in which they won 2 or fewer games. So this is familiar territory for them.

On win teams: Baylor 1-9, Charlotte 1-9 Coastal Carolina 1-9, Kansas 1-9, Oregon State 1-9, Rice 1-9, San Jose State 1-10
