Again this year I’ll be keeping track of those teams in contention for the very real four team College Football Playoff as well as those for my fictional creations, the Pesci Bowl, (named after short but feisty actor Joe Pesci), and the dreaded Ty-D Bowl, named after the toilet bowl cleaning product.

The playoff is four the best four power conference-level teams in the country, (Notre Dame counts as aa power conference team). The Pesci Bowl is for the two best non-power conference teams. The Ty-D Bowl is for the two worst FBS teams in the country. The idea is to track the contenders through their coming schedules, which will tell us what games to look out for. I’ll start with the teams with perfect records: undefeated power conference and non-power conference teams and winless FBS teams. When there are fewer than 3 undefeated power teams or 2 non-power teams or 2 winless teams, then I’ll include the 1 loss and 1 win teams. But for now, we are looking at perfect records.

THE PLAYOFF

Georgia 8-0 (305-95) ranked #2 in both polls but #1 by the commitee
11/4 vs. South Carolina 6-2 (210-162)
11/11 at Auburn 6-2 (290-125) ranked #16/#15 in the polls and #14 by the committee
11/18 vs. Kentucky 6-2 (201-199)
11/25 at Georgia Tech 4-3 (218-149)
Comment: Georgia has a serious challenge each week, especially Auburn. Then comes the Tide. But the Bulldogs are pretty good themselves.

Alabama 8-0 (344-78) ranked #1 by the writers and coaches #2 by the committee
11/4 vs. Louisiana State 6-2 (219-160) ranked #23 in both polls
11/11 at Mississippi State 6-2 (271-139) ranked #21/#22 in the polls and #16 by the committee
11/18 vs. Mercer 4-4 (232-151) (FCS)
11/25 at Auburn 6-2 (290-125) ranked #16/#15 in the polls and #14 by the committee
Comment: LSU is getting feisty. Mississippi State is still feisty. Auburn is always feisty. Then comes Georgia in the SEC title game. But even a one-loss Alabama team will likely make the playoff, even if Wisconsin and Miami run the table, (which they won’t).

Wisconsin 8-0 (280-103) ranked #4 in both polls but #9 by the committee
11/4 at Indiana 3-5 (216-214)
11/11 vs. Iowa 5-3 (200-139)
11/18 vs. Michigan 6-2 (211-144) ranked #24 by the coaches
11/25 at Minnesota 4-4 (201-150)
Comment: With Michigan stumbling, this is not a daunting schedule. We may not know how good the Badgers are – or aren’t - until the Big Ten title game.

U of Miami 7-0 (224-131) ranked #9/#6 by the polls but 10th by the committee
11/4 vs. Virginia Tech 7-1 (283-92) ranked #13 by everybody
11/11 vs. Notre Dame 7-1 (324-129) ranked #5/#8 by the polls but #3 by the committee
11/18 vs. Virginia 5-3 (197-192)
11/24 at Pittsburgh 4-5 (218-251)
Comment: The Canes have been barely scraping by. They are unlikely to scrape by the Hokies or the Irish, both of whom are probably better anyway.

One loss teams: Clemson 7-1, Notre Dame 7-1, Ohio State 7-1, Oklahoma 6-1, Oklahoma State 6-1, Penn State 7-1, Texas Christian 7-1, Virginia Tech 7-1, Washington 7-1

PESCI BOWL

Central Florida 7-0 (357-138) ranked #15/#14 by the polls but #18 by the committee
11/4 at Southern Methodist 6-2 (332-248)
11/11 vs. Connecticut 3-5 (202-308)
11/18 at Temple 3-5 (167-215)
11/24 vs. South Florida 7-1 (315-159) ranked #23 by the coaches
Comment: Houston soiled the season-ending party against USF but they didn’t spoil it. It will still decide the division and maybe who gets into the Pesci Bowl.

Memphis 7-1 (340-267) ranked #22/#21 in the polls but #23 by the committee
11/3 at Tulsa 2-7 (296-339)
11/18 vs. Southern Methodist 6-2 (332-248)
11/25 vs. East Carolina 2-6 (187-367)
Comment: Memphis will likely meet the winner of the UCF-USF game in the C-USA finals and the winner of that will go to the Pesci Bowl unless SMU messes things up some more.

South Florida 7-1 (315-159) ranked #16/#13
11/4 at Connecticut 3-5 (202-308)
11/16 vs. Tulsa 2-7 (296-339)
11/24 at Central Florida 7-0 (357-138) ranked #15/#14 by the polls but #18 by the committee
Comment: The Bulls should stampede into the UCF game at 9-1 while the Knights should be no worse than 9-1.

Toledo 7-1 (324-203)
11/2 vs. Northern Illinois 6-2 (224-144)
11/8 at Ohio U. 6-2 (326-203)
11/15 at Bowling Green 1-7 (164-302)
11/24 Western Michigan 5-3 (290-221)
Comment: The Rockets will have stiff tests the next couple of weeks but could sneak in as the American Conference teams battle each other.

TY-D BOWL

Baylor 0-8 (195-316)
11/4 at Kansas 1-7 (168-342)
11/11 vs. Texas Tech in Arlington 4-4 (309-265)
11/19 vs. Iowa State 6-2 (259-150) ranked #14/#16 by the writers and #15 by the committee
11/24 at Texas Christian 7-1 (298-118) ranked #10/#12 by the writers and #8 by the committee
Comment: Sic Transit Gloria! This is the school we wanted to be like, (on the field). Getting to the top is hard but staying there is harder if you aren’t one of college football’s blue bloods. But I’ll bet they can still beat Kansas. What is Mark Mangino doing these days? (Probably hollering at somebody.)

Georgia Southern 0-7 (124-286)
11/4 vs. Georgia State 4-3 (143-178)
11/9 at Appalachian State 5-3 (235-181)
11/18 vs. South Alabama 3-5 (183-206)
11/25 at Louisiana (formerly Louisiana-Lafayette, formerly SW Louisiana) 3-4 (212-285)
12/2 at Coastal Carolina 1-7 (188-303)
Comment: A long time FCS power with many national championships that will never win another because they went for the big bucks in FBS, the Eagles find themselves at 0-6, having just lost to an 0-6 UMASS team by 5TDs. Maybe they can beat Coastal Carolina, another refugee from FCS.

Texas- El Paso 0-8 (100-296)
11/4 at Middle Tennessee 3-5 (153-216)
11/11 at North Texas 5-3 (299-303)
11/18 vs. Louisiana Tech 4-4 (237-221)
11/25 at Alabama-Birmingham 5-3 (244-209)
Comment: UTEP, (formerly Texas Western), has had 21 seasons since 1972 in which they won 2 or fewer games. So this is familiar territory for them. The remaining schedule contains no great challenges but no easy marks, either.

On win teams: Bowling Green 1-7, Charlotte 1-7, Coastal Carolina 1-7, Kansas 1-7, Nevada-Reno 1-7, North Carolina 1-8, Oregon State 1-7, Rice 1-7, San Jose State 1-8
