- The first, third and fourth quarters were a 24-24 tie.

- We ran for 159 yards, passed for 289 for a total of 448 with 20 first downs and were +1 on turnovers. We scored 27 points and would have gotten into the 30’s if we’d let Andre Szmyt kick a couple of more field goals. That should have spelled victory.

- Tommy DeVito was 25 for 36 for 289 yards, 3TDs and no interceptions and ran for 61 yards, (80 if you don’t count the sacks, of which there were just three). What do you want from him? Trishton Jackson had 8 catches for 148 yards and 2 scores. \

- Sterling Hofrichter averaged 48.5 yards per punt and 64.5 yards per kickoff with just 20 yards in returns. Andre Szmyt kicked2 field goals and scored 9 points.

- Dino on his show said the attitude of recruits surprised him: after we won 10 games last year, they seemed to think we didn’t need and help and that they wouldn’t play here quickly. After the 3-5 start this year they seem to realize that we need help and that they could play here quickly. Boy, do they think that now!

- When you are feeling angry about the results of a game, it’s a good idea to imagine how the players and the coaches feel about it. To us, it’s an entertainment. If the team can put the community on the map, or seemingly remove it, It’s more than that. But our lives go on. We can watch a favorite TV show, go to a movie, read a book, rake the leaves, finally get around to cleaning out that closet, etc. etc. This is their lives, what they deal with 24/7. The best way to root for a team isn’t to act as if they are contracted to get you the victories you demand and didn’t hold up their end of the bargain. These guys aren’t professionals. It’s to root FOR them to achieve THEIR dreams. Then, when they do, you can enjoy it with them as if you were also a member of their team, which you have been because you’ve stuck with them all along.

- I started following SU football in Ernie Davis’ senior year back in 1961. I finally persuaded my Dad to take me to a game in 1964. Since then, I have witnessed:
9/25/65 A 9th ranked SU team loses 0-24 at home to a U of Miami team that wound up 5-4-1
9/10/66 A 7th ranked SU loses 10-35 on national TV against a Baylor team that finished 5-5
10/26/68 A 10th ranked Syracuse team loses at 11th ranked California 0-43 thanks to 9 turnovers. The game ends with 7 minutes left on the clock after the crowd rushed the field in the wake of a pick-six.
11/29/69 We have the #1 ranked pass defense in the country, which I inform a couple BC fans sitting behind me when we are leading 10-0 just before the half. They throw a TD pass on the next play, first of 5, 10-35.
11/4/72 and 11/16/74 Consecutive 0-37 and 0-45 trips to Boston College.
9/15/73 and 9/11/76 Two opening day losses in Archbold to Bowling Green, 14-41 and the 7-22 “revenge game”.
11/1/75, 9/18/76 and 9/17/77 “The 38s”: 38 point losses to Pitt, a 5-6 Iowa team and an NC State team coming off a 3-7-1 year.
10/13/79: We lose at Ohio State, win four in a row and take a 14-0 lead at Temple. Then we lose the rest of the game 3-49. To Temple.
9/18/82: Jim Ridlon: “Boy this is going to be some game. Illinois took the opening kickoff and drove right down there and now Syracuse has the ball they’re really trying.” SU 10 Illinois 47.
10/1/83: SU, determined to show #1 ranked Nebraska who we are, go for every fake, misdirection play and play-action pass and we lose 7-63.
9/14/85: Never open a season in a place called “Starksville”: SU 3 Mississippi State 30
10/18/86: Donnie McPherson throws a pick six on the first play and we lose to Penn State’s national champions, 3-42.
10/5/91: We are a dropped pass from a 21-7 lead over #1 Florida State, then do nothing but run the near side option the rest of the game and lose 14-46.
10/23-30/93: We lose on ESPN at U of Miami 0-49 and in the Dome vs. West Virginia 0-43 a week later. Lee Corso begs ESPN not to put Syracuse on again.
11/13/93, 11/4/95, 9/13/97, 10/16/99 and 10/11/03: Five visits to the well-named “Blacksburg”: SU 42 Hokies 220
10/1/98: We lose by a controversial flag vs. national champion Tennessee by a point, blow defending champions Michigan out of their own place, put up 7 dimes on Rutgers and marched down the field with the opening kickoff to make it 7-0 in Raleigh and have the Wolfpack in a 3rd and 29…and lose 17-38. Emotionally, this was the bottom for me because my hopes were so high. I was thinking we could run the table and play for the naiional tile while Donovan McNabb hoisted the Heisman. Nope and nope.
11/17/01: We’ve won 8 in a row, are ranked #13 and are at U of Miami to determine the Big East championship. SU 0 Miami 59.
9/9/04 and 12/21/04: The book-end losses to Purdue and Georgia Tech, 0-51 and 14-51.
2005-2008: We lose to Rutgers four times in a row
2007-2011: We lose to Connecticut five times in a row.
10/19/13 and 11/16/13: Accurater and then a cousin invite me over to their house to watch the Georgia Tech and Florida State games. We lose each by 8 touchdowns. At least the company was good.
10/10/15: We start with three straight wins and then give #8 LSU all they can handle in a 24-34 loss in the Dome. Again I have high hopes. Willie Taggart is 7-21 at USF and about to be fired if he loses another game. We get handled 24-45 and wind up losing 8 in a row which gets our coach fired.
11/5/16: We are 4-4 going to Clemson who is gearing up to win the national championship. Eric Dungey’s season ends and we lose 0-54.
11/11-25/17: We lead 38-24 at halftime against Wake Forest and the team leaves the field to a standing ovation for their exciting effort. We are wondering how good a bowl we will be in. The rest of the season is SU 29, Wake, Louisville and BC 138.
11/16/18: We cruise into New York and the Notre Dame game 8-2 and ranked #12. Dungey goes down again and we lose 3-36.

That’s a lot of emotional pummeling but I survived each of those debacles and still cared and continued to root for SU and there were that many great days and more that came afterwards. The very first game I ever watched or listened to was the 1961 Liberty Bowl, Ernie Davis’ last game, which we won. We are 348-313-6 since then, not bad for a basketball school. It’s been worth it.

SWC, this might be your best post in a long history of great posts. Mature, intelligent, and timely. Reminds me of a wise parent consoling his distraught child who has just come home with a bloody nose.

That's what we are right now, distraught children. But it's the players who have the bloody noses.
