Just like last season, the mid-season point in the Division I men's lacrosse world has crept up fast. In a bygone era, we wouldn't even be close to halfway through the proceedings, but with an increasingly earlier start date of Feb. 1, this exercise in handing out awards halfway through is already a week late.

Selection Sunday is May 3. Eight weeks of the season are behind us, and six are left. If teams haven't already, they are getting into the meat of their conference schedules. It's fun to set the table for the second half of the year with a look back at the first.

To the mid-season awards!

Schmeisser Award (Most Outstanding Defenseman)
Brandon Mullins, Syracuse, Jr.

This is what happens when a Texas high school football player of the year decides to play lacrosse at Syracuse. Four years later, even after a season-ending knee injury in 2013, he's one of the top defenseman in the nation. A lot of people focus on the Syracuse offense, but the defense, led by Mullins and long-stick midfielder Peter Macartney, is no slouch either. There's a reason the Orange look like the clear-cut top team in the country so far this year.

Specialist of the Year
Ben Williams, Syracuse, FO
This faceoff pick could be debated, but in the end, I went with the player who I think has had the greatest impact on his team relative to others. Give the Orange a faceoff guy and look what's happened. Same could be said for Maryland's Charlie Raffa, who could be considered the glue to the Terps' winning blue print. Navy's Brady Dove and Boston University's Sam Talkow are 1-2 nationally in win percentage, around 70 percent, and square off Saturday. The best part about Williams? He'd probably take offense to being called a specialist. The Minnesota kid has some offensive pop, too.
