Here is an interesting article from the Summer newsletter of the Onondaga County Resource Recovery newsletter. It’s about “best by” dates on foods:

It appears the food industry is trying to get us to throw out good food because it’s date has expired, even if the food hasn’t- so we will buy some more. The average household of four spends as much as $2,275 a year on food they throw out. The article even suggests donating “expired” foods to local food assistance programs if you don’t want to use it yourself.
 
You mean its okay to drink the milk that expired four days ago???? :)

It is not just the food industry - it is more commonplace in the spirit of commerce.
