Some surprises:

The Browns may have been named for Joe Louis, (although I doubt it, since he came from Detroit).

The Eagles name was inspired by FDR and the New Deal.

The Raiders were going to be named the Señors but the local paper complained they didn't have a type setting for the ~ .

The Chargers were named for a credit card.

The Rams got their nickname from Fordham.

They say the Redskins were named after their coach, Lone Star Dietz, who may or may not have been a Native American:

The story I heard about the Redskins is that they started in Boston, playing in braves field, which was also known as the "Wigwam", so the football team was named the Redskins to keep with the theme. The Braves were called that because a former Tammany Hall politician owned the team and the symbol of Tammany was an Indian chief. I've always thought that being named after a bunch of corrupt politicans was perfect for a team representing Washington.
