6/24/56 The Cincinnati Reds: Ted Kluszewski, Johnny Temple, Wally Post, Gus Bell, Frank Robinson, Ed Bailey-who had hit 3 home runs that day- Smoky Burgess, Ray Jablonski, Roy McMillan, Johnny Klippstein and Joe Nuxhall. Frank is the only black face, (he was rookie that year), but would turn out to be the best of them. They’d just swept a double header from the Dodgers that day but the Bums would still win the pennant.

The Reds won the 1940 World Series from the Tigers and remained contenders through the war but then went into an extended slump. From 19461-55 they had 10 consecutive losing records. But in 1956, the bludgeoned their way into contention, hitting 221 home runs and improving by 16 games to 91-63, Frank Robinson hit 38 homers, (as a rookie), Wally post 36, Ted Kluszewski 35, Gus Bell 29 and Ed Bailey 28. But they came up short of the Brooklyn Dodgers by 2 games and the Milwaukee braves by 1 game. They've been one of the most successful major league franchises ever since.

Ted Kluszewski was a star football player before he was a star baseball player"

Wally Post takes on Hank Aaron in "Home Run derby", (after the 1959 season)
