10/4/53 Gene Autry, later the owner of the California Angels. Also Baseball Umpire Ed Hurley, who tells a story of a guy with a mirror who was shining it in the eyes of Yankee batters during the World Series from his apartment window until they sent the cops after him.

Ed is the first guest, Gene the third, (at 14:30). This is one of the rare occassions that the "wild guess" segment is productive.

The Dodgers won that day, 7-3 to even up the World Series. But they lost the last two games. The 1953 Dodgers had the best record in Dodger history, 105-49. But they still weren't good enough to beat the Yankees.

He didn't own a baseball team but if I put Gene Autry on here, I should also put Roy Rogers:

He comes on at 17:40, to huge applause, which causes Bennett Cerf to think he is a baseball player. Roy was in town with a rodeo.

Roy had been on earlier with Dale Evans:

They come on at the 11 minute mark. This is 9/26/54, almost four years to the day before the above appearance. This time Bennett thinks he's a "national hero." Dorothy Kilgallen thinks he's a baseball player who is "not a hero in Brooklyn". Actually they are in town for another rodeo.
