Okay, just go with me here.

The First Meeting: Syracuse is undefeated but we are not #1. Arizona is. SU's perfection is suspect and none of us are sure that we are as good as our record. Enter Duke. We have one of the greatest games in college basketball at the Dome, and win it. We are validated!! We are good!! We sucked the blood from Duke and we became stronger. We are Worthy.

The Second Meeting (aka Sport Coat Game): We lose spectacularly and an epic Meme for the Ages is born. This game gives us notoriety, which is not as desirable as validation but hey. It was what it was.

2015: The Lost Season. We have two unmemorable losses to Duke. We fail as parasites - or did we? Perhaps Duke failed in its duties as host! Meh.

The Fifth Meeting: Syracuse defeats Duke at Cameron in an absolutely amazing game. We are having a crap season but because we sucked the blood of DUKE, we make it into the NCAA tournament. Duke gives us validation and the hematologic suction propels us to the Final Four.

The Sixth Meeting: We are toast. Yeah yeah, we've beaten two top ten teams but we have lost too many times. The only way - ONLY WAY - we can get into the tournament is to beat Duke but of course we're not going to beat them, although we seem to be playing them well but obviously they will win because they are superior to us - HEY! OMG, we beat Duke and we're dancing, baby!! Dick Vitale said so! We get our ticket punched because we are Duke's parasite and we imbibed long and we imbibed hard. It's what we do.

<smacking lips> Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

What will Duke do for us next year?

Pinot Noir or Merlot?

The last three years during the regular season we have learned what it is to be also-rans --a feeling that occasionally but rarely happened in the Big East. Throughout the history of the Big East we had a winning record against every other team in the league. The ACC has historically been UNC and Duke at the top, and every other team being measured by how they did against them. We are not bottom feeders nor are we parasites, but we are no longer at the top of the food chain.

There isn't a parasite and a host in symbiosis.

But you are right. This is a symbiotic relationship in which both schools benefit equally. Coach Ksaid as much in his post game comments.

You are right. My use of the term "symbiosis" is incorrect. But this is metaphor, not 9th grade biology!

As it turns out --- after doing some reading --- that I am wrong. It is possible for a relationship to be both "symbiotic" and "parasitic" the key here is whether the relationship is mutually beneficial or at a minimum does no harm to the host.

Sort of like those wee beasties that are busy in our intestines.

Still, when the the reaction to a metaphor is What is he talking about ...

If Duke was not going to make the tournament, would we be a saprophyte?
"A plant, fungus, or microorganism that lives on dead or decaying organic matter."

That question is deep. I have a hard time imagining any Duke team sinking to that level. It is much better for us to have the host lively and kicking, so then we can drain it and get the glory. There's no glory in in the other scenario!

Duke's the ass and we are the boot of justice

You can't find stuff like this anywhere else.
