We are half way through the season. We are out-gaining our opposition by 110 yards per game, despite our 2-4 record. (Amazingly, we’ve managed to lose games in which we out-gained the other team by 259 and 181 yards.) +110 yards seems pretty good. Where does that rank in FBS? Here’s a top 25, with some other interesting numbers:

1) FLORIDA STATE has averaged 531 yards a game and surrendered 222, an advantage of +309 yards per game. They are scoring 46 pints per game and surrendering 12, an advantage of +34 points per game. They have 6 wins, 1 loss and are ranked 14th, 12th and 10th by the BCS, the writer’s poll and the coach’s poll respectively. (NR= not ranked)

Comments: SU and Pitt both have losing records. The other teams out-gaining their opponents by 100 yards per game or more have a combined record of 117-33. They’ve out-scored their rivals by an average of 19 points per game. Pitt is only +3 and SU is the only such team to be outscored on the season with -3. It’s interesting how few of these teams are ranked. 13 of 26 teams aren’t ranked in any poll and only 10 of them are ranked in all three. Only 5 of them are mid-majors. 12 of them have more than one loss. If these teams keep playing like this, we may see them break into the rankings and the ranked teams on this list may find themselves falling in or out of the rankings as we go along.

Here are the teams that are ranked in at least one of the three polls that are not on the above list:

*The Buckeyes are on probation and are thus ineligible to be ranked by the coaches or BCS.

They’ve already been listed above but I decided to list the undefeated teams together:

ALABAMA 423-181= +252 / 41-8= +33 / 6-0 / 1-1-1
OREGON 542-360= +162 / 52-20= +32 / 6-0 / 3-2-2

RUTGERS 349-317= +32 / 25-12= +13 / 6-0 / 15-19-17

Comments: Yards are not points and points are not wins. More points in each game are wins. As Bill Parcells says, these teams have the records they deserve. But I think the yards measure the physical nature of the team. If a team is being dominating the line of scrimmage and/or out-quicking the opposition in the secondary or at least efficiently running their plays, (most of the time), they are going to out-gain the opposition. If that doesn’t produce more points and wins, you look for other things: big plays, mistakes, special teams problems and the timeliness of things: Can you bunch your successful plays together to produce a score? Do your mistakes come at exactly the wrong time? Can you overcome your errors with positive plays?

Here is a look at the teams Syracuse has played and will be playing:
NORTHWESTERN 410-381= +29 / 31-22= +9 / 6-1 / NR-NR-NR
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 415-332= +83 / 32-19= +13 / 5-1 / 10-11-9
STONY BROOK 470-328= +142 / 39-16= +23 / 6-1 / FCS #10
MINNESOTA 375-313= +62 / 24-20= +4 / 4-2 / NR-NR-NR
PITTSBURGH 446-344= +102 / 28-25= +3 / 2-4 / NR-NR-NR
RUTGERS 349-317= +32 / 25-12= +13 / 6-0 / 15-19-17
The teams we’ve played are 29-9 on the season but only Stony Brook has out-gained their opposition by more than we have. And only Pittsburgh out-gained us when they played us. And those are our only wins!
CONNECTICUT 321-261= +60 / 19-16= +3 / 3-4 / NR-NR-NR
SOUTH FLORIDA 401-391= +10 / 25-28= -3 / 2-4 / NR-NR-NR
CINCINNATI 465-352= +113 / 37-14= +23 / 5-0 / 21-21-18
LOUISVILLE 409-331= +78 / 33-21= +12 / 6-0 / 16-16-14
MISSOURI 324-356= -32 / 23-26= -3 / 3-4 / NR-NR-NR
TEMPLE 309-391= -82 / 27-22= +5 / 3-2 / NR-NR-NR
Cincinnati and Louisville will be tough but the other games look winnable, (but keep in mind Missouri’s been taking on a slate of SEC teams). And we need to win them to get to a bowl.

What does it all mean? Again, not that we are better than our record- we’ve earned it, for sure. But we could be having the kind of break-though season we desperately need. We just need to clean up the errors to play on that level the rest of the year. That doesn’t mean it’s easy but I’d rather be faced with cleaning up mistakes than wishing we had the players that would allow us to move the ball or stop the other team. We have them already.

FLORIDA 378-297= +81 / 28-12= +16 / 6-0 / 2-3-4

*The Buckeyes are on probation and are thus ineligible to be ranked by the coaches or BCS.

They’ve already been listed above but I decided to list the undefeated teams together:

ALABAMA 423-181= +252 / 41-8= +33 / 6-0 / 1-1-1
OREGON 542-360= +162 / 52-20= +32 / 6-0 / 3-2-2
CINCINNATI 465-352= +113 / 37-14= +23 / 5-0 / 21-21-18
NOTRE DAME 388-287= +101 / 27-9= +18 / 6-0 / 5-5-5
OREGON STATE 458-362= +96 / 27-18= +9 / 5-0 / 8-8-11
KANSAS STATE 428-340= +88 / 41-17= +24 / 6-0 / 4-4-3
FLORIDA 378-297= +81 / 28-12= +16 / 6-0 / 2-3-4
MISSISSIPPI STATE 413-332= +81 / 35-16= +19 / 6-0 / 12-15-16
LOUISVILLE 409-331= +78 / 33-21= +12 / 6-0 / 16-16-14

OHIO STATE 452-400= +52 / 40-25= +15 / 7-0 / NR-7-NR*

Thanks SWC. I think I feel better. I now know what it feels like to be one of the other jamokes in Good Will Hunting when they find out Matt Damon is a genius.

In other words we are closer to being good than we might think?

Nice data. But where do we rank in turnover ratio. Doesn't matter how many yards you get or stop when you can't win the turnover battle.

SWC --thanks again, lots to ponder in that info.

A. Between the 20s: We put up positive yardage numbers against decent teams, including several that make your list (Stony Brook is one of them).

B. What's missing: KO and punt return yardage, with an occasional long one; red zone efficiency to always get points; red zone stops; positive turnover ratio; long strike capability; more sacks and QB pressures than we give up.

The other stat/observations I'd like to see: wins, via improvement in all the category B stats, for the next 6 weeks.

Do you have any data to support your wild-ass theories?

It's better to look at the data first and then see what wild-ass theories emerge.

The best 2-4 team in the country. :bat:

Hey! we can be the best 2-5 team in the country! :rolling:
