As I understand it, the contract allowed for them to re-negotiate with ESPN specifically with the addition of 2 teams. I do not believe they can go to the open market as a result of this move. Probably the best they could achieve might be an arbitration if they can't agree upon $$$ with ESPN. Does anyone seriously believe that the additions of SU and Pitt without being able to take the contract on the open market would be worth more $$$ per team than what the ACC is already getting? I sure don't. Which means, to me, ESPN and the ACC were in on this together. I don't think ESPN wanted to see some of the better ACC programs (FSU, VT, Clemson) wind up in the SEC, a conference they don't control. So to get the ACC more $$$ in an attempt to keep the ACC stable and healthy, this clause was used to keep it all legal. And with the expansion pickings so slim for the ACC (due to their academic standards) - Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and Syracuse - I'm not sure ESPN cared all that much which two. Everything goes in cycles and this is all about ESPN taking a flyer on the ACC in the hopes that FSU and Miami bounce back to 1990s early 2000s form and believing the ACC will be grateful to them in assisting them in keeping the conference together that they will remain entirely with ESPN when the contract does go back on the open market. The ACC's choices were also about taking a flyer. And I should hope by now that this does not need explaining. Cheers, Neil
