although this clip refreshes my memory as to how it happened...

It would be nice to exorcise the demons of that fateful night by finally returning the favor and taking a win from them on their new home field this Saturday, wouldn't it?

The rule is the ground can't cause a fumble, Thomas' knee wasn't down, but the ground caused the fumble when his arm hit the turf. The final score in that game was Minnesota 35 SU 33.

"A sometimes controversial rule is usually referred to as "the ground cannot cause a fumble". If a player is tackled and loses control of the ball at or after the time he makes contact with the ground, the player is treated as down and the ball is not in play." "It is also possible for the ground to cause a fumble in college football if the ball hits the ground before any part of the ball carrier's body (other than the hand or foot) touches the ground."

In Thomas' case it looked like his forearm hit the turf first, I could be wrong though but that's the way it appears to my Orangeyes.

Not sure from that just when the ball came out. What if he didn't have control of it when he hit the ground?

UGGG, that game, the NC state game, the game against Oklahoma (I believe) on the missed fg at the end. Those were some really painful losses.

That is what happens when you let a bad team hang around and leave it to a bad call to determine the game. That Minnesota team pushed our defense around like toys and it was extremely frustrating. The same when we went to Oklahoma as well, they just had their offensive line push us around and controlled the clock the whole game.

Both NC State games, going 0-4 in Dome openers, etc.

All losses hurt, but every single loss during that four-year span were direct shots to the gut.

It was for that reason Pasqualoni was not given the cushion many thought he deserved in the years after.

Their offense statistically didn't have a great game, in fact they only gained 73 yards on the ground (and 266 overall), they also lost 4 fumbles, but not as damaging as our 2 that went for TD's. They had a 50 yard TD pass at the end of the 1st half that was very frustrating, otherwise it would have been 12-0 at the half. They had the back to back fumble returns for TDs to start the 2nd half. In fact we were the ones running the ball, we had over 300 yards rushing. The turnovers killed us (fumbles and ints), the fumbles obviously but McNabb threw an int on the goal line into the endzone, after throwing an int on the previous play on a quick slant, we ran the same play if my memory is correct and he was intercepted again. We dominated time of possession but it was a strange game where we give up the TD at the end of the half, the back to back fumble return TDs, the first when we were driving on the opening drive of the 2nd half and we dug ourselves a hole (in large part because of our mistakes as opposed to being dominated) that we nearly climbed out of but as was the case for SU far to often just not enough.

Ah yes, you're right. I think I combined the OU game with the Minny game in my head or I just pushed that one out of my memory and for good reason!

That was certainly one I'd like to have forgotten about, but you are right about the @OU game, there was enough running through and by us to last a season, with no adjustments to try and stop simple running plays.

Difficult to do the "what-if" history game, but say Pasqualoni's record had been 39-10 in the McNabb years instead of 35-14, with wins over East Carolina, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Oklahoma. Don't even give him the '96 North Carolina and Miami games or the '98 North Carolina State game.

I think he'd have had a lot more rope in the early aughts if he hadn't lost so many sloppy games to so many inferior (as defined both the opponents' records and by the betting lines on those games) teams.

[If we'd played a cleaner game against Miami in '96 - and Dion Maddox hadn't fumbled - Pasqualoni would have likely been 40-9 with three Big East titles and BCS/Bowl Alliance bowls. That really would've been something.]

It still surprises me that NCState leads our all time series 6-0, what the heck is that about?

Don't forget that Tennessee loss in the Dome, when they went on to win the NC. BRUTAL

I miss those graphics on ESPN2. I wish they'd go back to them from time to time, as a sort of throwback.

You don't even have to go that far back to play the "what if" game.

Had we beaten Rutgers in '03 and Temple in '04 there's a chance he's still coaching here today.

We've done this to death but during the McNabb Era, we went 35-14 (23-5 in conference) while Virginia Tech went 36-12 (22-6). Our highest ranking was #14 and we never got a whiff of a national title game. Then they got Vick and went 22-2 (13-1), ranked in the top five both years and played for the national title while we went 13-10 (7-7) without McNabb. That plus the multiple losses to Rutgers and Temple and the too frequent blow-out losses, (0-49, 0-43- back-to-back- 0-62, 0-59, 7-49, 8-51, 0-51, 14-51, many of them on national TV, eroded confidence in the program and caused recruits to go elsewhere. When we had a losing record in 2002, the rumors that Coach P was on the way out began and the recruiting fell off even farther. When a new AD came in, I believe his fate was sealed at that point, although I don't know that Dr. Gross wanted to make a change so early and after a bowl game.

I don't really think the 1996 Minnesota game was a big part of this, although it didn't help.

No they didn't. Minn had 73 yards rushing. SU had the ball for 11 more minutes.

SU flat out dominated, had 301 yds rushing. McNabb had 3 ints and 2 fumbles returned for TD's against it. McNabb had one int a play after Deon Maddox dropped an easy TD.

How about when we actually salvaged that season, won the big east and went to (I believe) the Sugar Bowl. I was so excited that we would go against Florida, so everyone would remember the name Donovan Mcnabb, only to end up getting torched right out the gate by Spurriers squad. We were down like 14-0 in the first 7 minutes. Game was over before it got started.
