We've done this to death but during the McNabb Era, we went 35-14 (23-5 in conference) while Virginia Tech went 36-12 (22-6). Our highest ranking was #14 and we never got a whiff of a national title game.  Then they got Vick and went 22-2 (13-1), ranked in the top five both years and played for the national title while we went 13-10 (7-7) without McNabb. When we had a losing record in 2002, the rumors that Coach P was on the way out began and the recruiting fell off even farther. When a new AD came in, I believe his fate was sealed at that point, although I don't know that Dr. Gross wanted to make a change so early and after a bowl game. 
 
I don't really think the 1996 Minnesota game was a big part of this, although it didn't help.
