I first started following SU football in Ernie Davis' senior year of 1961. (I must have spent 1959 playing around in the back yard.) That's 54 seasons. In that time we've stated 3-0 four times: 1967, 1975, 1987 and 1991. Three of those times we lost our fourth game. (And in 1987 we fell behind 7-21 in the fourth game). So I haven't seen a lot of great starts. We always seems to be thrown off schedule by some early defeat and have to scramble to make up for it.:mad::confused::(

I sure hope I get to see my fifth 3-0 start this year.

You would think that we would have had more than that just from 1987-1998. But it shows that we have had a LOT of down years since the late 60s. Also shows how hard our OOC schedules have been in the last 25 years. Except for the GROB era, we have had enough competitive teams that cupcake OOC schedules would have given us many more fast starts. Even with all the question marks for this year's team, 3-0 is very attainable. But first things first, let's go 1-0!

I feel like the month of September in the 90s was absolutely gut-wrenching for SU football fans. I mean literally every single year there was one or two soul-crushing losses.

Very much so. I still can't watch the 1998 Tennessee replay.

funny, thats when i started following them, and went to my first game. i was 11.

Yes, but look at who those early schedule losses were to in many cases (at least in the 90''s). I remember Ohio State, Oklahoma, Tennessee. There were also some big non-con. wins, like Texas, and Florida. I am leaving out Nebraska due to the fact we weren't in a conference then. Yeah there were a few "bad losses" like East Carolina, but all in all we have had a balanced to competitive (read tough) non-con. schedule probably since joining a conference.

One of the reasons why I've been documenting the early years of the Schwartzwalder Era is that I was too young to have lived through it or remember it and I wanted to do so in a virtual sense by reading about and writing about each game. I'll take it at least up to where my memory begins and probably keep going with it afterwards, supplemented by personal observations from what i do remember.

I'll take those years.

Give them to us.

But not those starts. Let's not have a "soul crushing defeat" this September. Please!

Has anybody ever done a biography on Schwartzwalder? He was an incredible human being.
