Using the College Football Playoff Rankings:
http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings
(With the asterisk that the BCS system might have had different standings.)
If we had the BCS, we'd have Alabama vs. Oregon
With the Playoff we have:
Alabama vs. Ohio State
Oregon vs. Florida State
And the winners play for the national championship in 12 days .
If we had a 6 team playoff we'd have:
Florida State vs. Texas Christian and the winner vs. Oregon
Ohio State vs. Baylor and the winner vs. Alabama
Two games today, two a week from Saturday and the title game the following week.
If we had an 8 team playoff we'd have:
Alabama vs. Michigan State
Oregon vs. Mississippi State
Florida State vs. Texas Christian
Ohio State vs. Baylor
You talk about New Year's Day mattering again! And the winner play in the semi-finals in 10 days and the semi-final winners play for the national title the week after that, (probably on Monday as they are doing it now).
You could have some years where, if the power five winners get automatic bids, the eight team playoff could look a little different than that but this year the match-ups would be the same as they are all in the top 8.
84 of the 88 national champions or co-champions, per the writers and coaches polls and the BCS won all their games or all their games but one and all such teams this year except unranked Marshall would be in the 8 game playoff.
(You gotta feel sorry for Marshall- they lost one game by one point and scored 66 points in that game. But if they'd won that game they wouldn't have sniffed even an 8 team playoff anyway.)
