i know we've talked about it til we're blue in the face

but oh my god that is unbelievable

Here's is the sorted list of each teams ranking in p5 yards per play minus their points per game. If you're at the top of this list, it means you gain lots of yards and can't score.

fwiw last year we were 38th on this list

McDonald was the OC for 14 games against P5 teams we scored 230 points or 16.4 points per game.

Against our 4 non-P5 opponents we scored 173 points or 43.3 points per game.

McDonald was horrible against teams with equal or more talent. We only scored over 30 points against 1 P5 team last years season finale against Boston College and we only scored 34 points.

Plain and simple I don't care about yards all I want is points. Coaches don't care if they give up all the yards as long as their opponent's aren't putting up 7 each possession.

we're getting fooled into thinking there's a weaker relationship between yards and points than there is.

there's a 90% correlation between yards rank and points rank last year

we are the weird team

in baseball OPS leads to runs. mcdonald was like a manager that calls 2 strike bunts with the bases loaded

Maybe in college football their is a correlation, but I know in pro football there isn't a correlation. The Patriots have been a horrible team on defense recently giving up tons of yards, but their points given up has been in the top half of the league.
The year the Packers were 15-1 they were 32nd in yards pg given up, but middle tier in ppg and the Pats were 14-2 31st in ypg and 10th in ypg.

Our team has been able to move the ball from our 20 to the opponent's 30-40 yard line pretty well, but our team has had a lot of stupid stuff happen I would give coaching/execution/penalties the blame. I just don't think our offense will magically get better unless we improve on 3rd down.

last year there was an 83% correlation between points per game and yards per play in the NFL

Look who is fifth on that list. We should hire their OC.

Simply, we are a team that is horrid in the red zone.

Both those teams were high-scoring and usually playing with big leads. The yards given up were to hurry-up offenses vs. prevent defenses, garbage time, etc. Sacks, turnovers, and incompletions will kill a lot of drives before the end zone when facing those desperation offenses week after week.

What's our number with Notre Dame included? I know they technically aren't "P5", but really they should be included in that group.

i don't have time to redo that right now but my guess is we'd still be at the top with 15 pts vs 429 yards but by a smaller margin. the other 2 p5 games averaged 13 pts and 425 yards.
