Do you recall the national media freaking out over SU in Albany 2003?

This topic was buried in another thread so I wanted to post a poll. I remember a firestorm of criticism over the committee placing a #3 seeded SU in the Albany regional. Didn't every ESPN and CBS talking head talk about that before, during, and after the tourney?

It was mentioned often, and many feel we were gifted that and unfairly as a #3

Im sure Oklahoma was pleased lol

Who do I send the Thank You note to?

Actually, made up in some ways for giving us a 3 seed. We should have been seeded higher, thank goodness we weren't.

Anyone also remember how upset Kelvin Sampson was after we held them to 47? I can't remember the exact quote but he was asked about the 2-3 zone and he tried to downplay how good it actually was. Seemed like a sore loser.

Yet no one cared that UT played its regional in Texas.

It was definitely talked about. Cant remember if they "freaked out", but i definitely recall stuff like "watch out for syracuse, if they make the sweet 16 they'll have a huge crowd advantage playing in albany." Which was 100% true.

North Carolina and Duke play in the state of North Carolina the first two rounds EVERY YEAR. Double standard in my opinion. Regional venues are selected years in advance.

IIRC, Wake won a weak ACC that year, and was #2 in the East. I think the committee knew we were better, but couldn't justify SU over the #1 ACC team. Wake was really a 2a and SU a 2b so I think the committee gave us Albany. JMO

Well, they were a #1 seed. That's an appropriate privilege for a #1 seed.

UCLA was a #2 seed in 2007 and played a regional in California. Don't remember one peep about it.

I think it was an issue because we were a #3 seed, not a #1. This isn't the same as UCLA, Duke or UNC.

It wasn't ANYTHING close to michigan state getting to play us in lansing michigan ...yet noone talked poorly on good ol' izzo for that one

i think its a bad topic of discussion. Syracuse is 3 hours from Albany...how many times has carolina and duke been in greensboro when they were a 2 or 3 seed? plenty im sure

Probably a decent amount, but that's still not the same.

SU was a worse seed and got to play in a favorable court against a higher seed. I'm not saying you can avoid it or anything like that, but it's different than UNC being a 2 seed and playign the first 2 rounds in Carolina, when they're playing lower seeded teams in every game.

3 hours? Maybe on a moped. :)

It was at the Palace in Auburn Hills...a suburb of Detroit...
